About This File

This is a map that was created in 2003 as "E4M1: First Gate" for the project "The Ninth Gate". However, as that project remained incomplete, this map was never released. Now that the maps from the project are being released individually, you can now play what would have opened that episode, retitled as "The Hazard Variation"!

I actually made another E4M1 back in 2001 for the project but as that was too primitive, it was discarded and replaced with this. I am eventually planning to release an updated version of that map as well.

This present map is one that I am really proud of. I think it turned out nicely in both the looks as well as gameplay department. It's quite an easy map as it was supposed to be the first level in an episode. Still, I think the pacing of the level is good and I hope you'll have fun playing it!

Interesting bit of trivia: this WAD file's size is 666 KB.

A great episode opener. Not very hard, but then again, I don't think it's supposed to be either.

It could be a great first map of an episode. As a stand alone map it loses its magic. Although it is good map with wise design and enjoyable gameplay. 4/5 - Damned

squarish, too easy, too short, boring and not much fun, it looks good, though... 2 stars would have been to harsh 3/5

This is a nice-looking, fairly simple level that captures the E4 style. It's easier than the real E4M1 - the worst monster is a single baron of hell, and the design is mostly open, with escape routes - but it's pleasant fun.

Quality wise, this is up there. Difficulty wise, 'ultra violence' could have been passed off as 'hey not too rough'. A lackluster experience.

If you played more of his maps you'll recognize his typical style. Once I knew the layout, I tried (numerous times) nightmare mode. There the gameplay really shines. Health and weapons are there for such a run and once you got the berserk it's done.4.5/5 coldfusio

A good, small, and worthy map in the Episode 4 style.

thank god Underhalls was the map that followed this mod as that level was able to remind me what actually competent level design looks like.

Not that bad, even kind of interesting find the secrets in the map! But yeah, that switches jungle is a awful choice really.

A basic and nice looking showroom type of map where monsters are trapped inside glass prisons, no exit and no way to play this with any modern source Port like DSDA-Doom and GZDoom, but works really well in Crispy Doom. It was a pleasant experience.

Conceptually not bad, it's a pretty imposing tower with some decent lighting, but no ammo at all despite having the guns and a VERY obscure way to rise up the floor in the lava pit? That's a big downer. But overall, it's ok.

Well, the map is pretty basic. The map is quite challenging, with there being 0 ammo pickups (excluding the backpack) outside of the starting room. There are also nazis for some reason. I will give it 2 stars only because this really wasn't meant to be played to be enjoyed, but rather just a example of how to build a map in DEU.
