About This File

A remake of the Doom 2 level "Entryway" (map01).

I started by building Entryway from scratch, exactly like the original (no copy/pasting), then added the new stuff.

One of the secret areas is a remake of the starting room in the Quake level "The Tomb of Terror" (E3M3). I had that Quake level playing on a laptop and tried to build it in Doom Builder on my desktop computer. I gave up after only building the first room and a hallway because it was taking too long.

"Smedley" is the name of one of the racers in the game Road Rash 64. I like his name because I think it's funny.

Designed with jumping and freelook in mind. Not designed for crouching or bfg aiming.

Texture use was nice. I think the author has a good concept...but gameplay is just too tedious. I don't think "Entryway" lends itself to this intensity of gameplay anyway. I've played lots of levels...but this just isn't my cup of tea. This probably could've been something really nice. 2/5

What? The file size of this suddenly just went way down and got replaced by some useless map. Don't know what's going on, but sent an email to the author.

Demos were included to show that it is playable.

This is an amusing remake of Map01 that packs 1,800+ monsters into a very tight space. It's a lot easier if you grab the weapons cache behind the start location! The textures unfortunately reminded me of the first GOTHIC99 map, but that passed quickly. Overall it's superbly constructed, with loads of secrets, but a bit of a slog to play; would be nicer without the lost souls and fewer archviles, but that might just be my taste.

As far as remakes go, this was pretty lame.

I finished it on UV at 4th attempt without saving. Bad remake. Tons of monsters, but it was easy 'cause the layout is still the same. 0/5.

Punisher with Quake textures, and about 2000 monsters, including cyberdemons placed around as if they were imps. Great construction, crap gameplay. If you made a map of your own ideas, with a realistic difficulty level, it would probably be amazingly epic, but this just sucks. 1/5 -jj

Simply getting to the exit isn't hard. Try exiting in under 40 seconds or try killing all the monsters and finding all the secrets.

I didn't know of Punisher when I made this. I wanted to release something to /idgames and chose to do a map01 remake because I liked the layout for a slaughter map and people are already familiar with the map. The gameplay is the same as in all my other maps and there are way harder maps out there than mine. Difficulty settings were added to smedley, but I don't bother adding them to my maps anymore because it's a waste of my time when people complain.

A very poor attempt at a HR style map. The only problem is there is nowhere to run - the enemies are packed in like sardines and there not sardines, there Arch-vile's, Ravenant's, Pain Elemental's, Cyberdemon's etc.... Visually the map looks well with the Quake textures, but I cannot find anything positive worth commenting on other than that.

ATTENTION ALL N00BS: DON'T RATE THIS BADLY BECAUSE IT'S TOO DIFFICULT FOR YOU ON UV. Provided you got the skills to try this on UV, this is one of those maps that provides intensity and carnage on a scale you can only find in DooM. I simply love these maps where you think "omg impossible" at first, but if you try really hard...those are the special moments in gaming for me. Only one really lamely hidden secret turned me off, couldn't find it for hours, so normally 4/5, but in regard to the n00bs 5/5.

"squane" is good. This is bad. Try to make more levels like "squane" and waste something like "smedley"... 1/5 !

Incredible flow, amazing balance. The traps are arranged in a very nasty and fun way, it's the bfg-athon in its finest - don't stop firing, but dont forget to dodge really well also, or death will come quick. It makes the map very dynamic and intense to play. On a negative note, there are perhaps too many secrets, which make studying the map and coming up with a route too tedious. Would've rated it a solid 4/5, but too many noobs and liars here in comments, so this is 5/5 to balance it out a bit.

When I read this as a "Entryway remake", I wa hoping for something good by the size. Guess it's all Quake textures. Meh, the map was WAY too hard on UV, I was'nt pleased being welcomed by 2 archviles and a swarm of revenants with a cyberdemon shooting my back. 2 stars. -Moti

More time was spent playtesting the map than building it (as usual). Like all my maps, gameplay = spamplay, sorry for not writing that in the txt file. Many fights/traps are probably unfair if you don't know where everything is (watch the demos). Map data is 842kb, a song is 851kb, Quake textures are 2.62mb (sorry, I wasn't sure how to delete unused textures). 0/5 for rating my own map and stealing layouts - toddles

Was the map fun on the other difficulty settings besides UV? or does the map still suck on them?

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.

What the actual f*ck is this map. I love having 4 rockets, a shit ton of bullets and like 10 shotgun shells to take out a revenant, and whatever was in that cage. Doesn't look too bad, maybe this negativity is cus im no expert, also rather unskilled at the game?

thank god Underhalls was the map that followed this mod as that level was able to remind me what actually competent level design looks like.

Not that bad, even kind of interesting find the secrets in the map! But yeah, that switches jungle is a awful choice really.

A basic and nice looking showroom type of map where monsters are trapped inside glass prisons, no exit and no way to play this with any modern source Port like DSDA-Doom and GZDoom, but works really well in Crispy Doom. It was a pleasant experience.
