About This File

This is the final version of Newmaps. Newmaps is a Chex Quest mod (*cough*) based on The Ultimate Chex Quest.

In May 2005 I came across The Ultimate Chex Quest. Then I saw some of the fanmade maps and thought: "Hey! Why don't I try my hand at making Chex Quest levels?" And so Newmaps was started. In June of 2005 I released the first beta which only had the first two maps complete. Back then, I only planned to make five or so levels, but then I started making more and more and it became this big thing. I don't even want to think of how many hours I put into it. I hope you have as much fun playing it as I had making it for you. (Man, how many times has this been said before?)

(NOTE: If you just play the first few levels and decide it's too boring and stop playing, don't. Remember, I had just learned to map when I made those. The later ones are much cooler!)

(ANOTHER NOTE: This game was designed with OpenGL in mind. While the game will run in software mode, some things will not work properly. So I strongly suggest using OpenGL mode AT ANY COST!!! If you can't use OpenGL mode, oh well.)

(YET ANOTHER NOTE: If you shut the game off, load a game, start a new game, etc. during a cutscene, specifically while the screen is black, it will be black when you start the other game! Wait until it's over, (Or just skip it, see THE LUCKY SEVENTH NOTE) then do your other stuff. If, for some reason, you do this, play the cutscene again. (And finish it this time!))

(NOTES - VOLUME IV: The fade to black effects are done by changing the fog settings. Since I have no way of knowing your fog settings, they are reset to the defaults. (Color: 000000, Density: 100) So if you had settings other than the defaults, they will be defaulted. Sorry, but this was the only way I could do it.)

(PENTANOTE: The sniper scope. One of the coolest things in the game is the sniper scope. While you have the large zorcher equipped, press 'z' to activate sniper mode, and press 'x' or switch to a different weapon to deactivate it.)

(THE SIXTH NOTE: If you do any of the stuff described in 'YET ANOTHER NOTE' while in sniper mode, you will not be able to see your weapons. If you do that, Don't Panic! Just turn sniper mode on and off. They'll be back.)

(THE LUCKY SEVENTH NOTE: Starting with beta 10.5, all cutscenes are skippable. Just press the spacebar during one to skip it.)

(ONE MORE, FOR GOOD MEASURE: This is Newmaps episodes 1-3. Episode IV is not included in this WAD. You can check for progress on that at my website: http://xbolt.knowledgehouse.info)

A true follow-on to Chexquest. Has an extended theme and story running through the whole 27 episodes. Does the Chexquest story better than the original. A bit campy, with extendend conversations between characters, and other friendlies. Made for Chex followers, not Doom players. Extensive use of Legacy 3dfloors.

To all the ones saying its bad...Skip to episode 2, or map E3M9. Episode 2 and 3 has better maps, and E3M9 has one of the largest FraggleScripts that I have seen...and plays like a puzzle. TRY IT NOW - Atariangamer

It is rare to see mods for chex quest, but I have to agree with those that call this mapset a bit dull. Sorry. However, the author shows promise, he just needs to brush up on his skills a bit.

More tripe.  Huge badly designed and featureless rooms that give you leg ache just watching going through them. The opposition from monsters is pitiful.

A busted crock of shit. The map is random scribble, it's insane.  Why do they upload this tripe?  The third screenshot above gives an idea what to expect.

Consists of some rooms to be opened in key sequence from a central area. Doors are narrow and each reveals a row of monsters waiting for you, and you don't have enough ammo (I had to cheat). No atmosphere, bright lighting, and mostly Wolfenstein-ish cuboid rooms. Technically OK, with minor texture mis-matches. At least his own summary was modest.   Give it a miss.

cannonball is yet another mapper who will probably take some getting used to when it comes to his maps. I remember hating on Return to Hadron when I first played it, but after subsequent plays it got easier. the same can be said for a lot of his other wads.   while this is my first time playing through Sparta 2, I easily got into cannonball's playstyle. his architecture style is always the same, as are his usage of monsters, basically you'll be running around often in the heat of monsters; the space is wide enough to accomodate this kind of playstyle and you just gotta be quite wary of where projectiles are flying. even if the monster count is low the layouts make things rough. but overall, what I like most about cannonball's maps is how well they can be run through. sure, you're gonna be dealing with a fuckload of carnage in these maps, but they all are very speedrun-friendly which is a plus. notable maps include:   MAP08, which is probably the roughest start in the wad MAP12, which has a false sense of security with its monster count. the two slaughter finales which are both well done.

I don't pretend to understand any of the promotional material accompanying this map, relating to wizards and the like, and it just seems like a typically unsubtle early offering, albeit on a grand scale. One of the reviews says you can't get out of the Cyberdemon arena once you've teleported into it near the start, but the bad news is that you can. The final room with the Spider Mastermind is quite lively and entertaining, if you persevere that far.   The version of this I played was a Doom 2 conversion, which ran in the MAP10 slot, with some Revenants, chaingunners and Pain Elementals, but if you download the one on this page you'll probably get the original wad.
