About This File

Original idea was to create a 4-level megawad containing levels of absolutely different styles (medieval, hi-tech, hell, etc.). For numerous reasons I failed to create it. Testae Virtus (The Castle of Skull) is one level in medieval style. Mostly it was impressed by Shadowman's great Cheogsh and Hexen. It is a big castle, mostly skull-themed (which is original, as usually we see various hell castles), filled with mostly new monsters (and some old ones too). I didn't change weapons, though, to preserve original gameplay.

You are invulnerable during the cuscenes while the camera is changed, so don't worry. Also, most of them usually can't be triggered while you're fighting someone.

The wad features no finishing statistics, hidden places aren't marked as secrets. The falling damage is forced, both for player and for monsters. In this aspect gameplay is more Hexen-ish than Doom-ish.

Also this is some kind o rebirth of my very old and one of the very first levels I created. It was called "Kyragem" and represented the final episodes of an old adventure Legend of Kyrandia. Now I'm much more skilled in Doom modding and mapping, so Testae Virtus is something with Kyragem atmosphere, but much more detailed. Don't misunderstand me, Testae Virtus is not a representation of Legend of Kyrandia. However, I used three midi tracks from LoK. Kyragem.wad was released only among Russian Doom Community and it isn't an interesting work.

Maybe once I'll be able to compile the levels and finally release that project, or maybe I'll be releasing what I can do when I can one by one. Who knows.

In the description, you say that you failed to make this. So why in god's name did you try anyway if you know it's just an excercise in futility?

Bland game play along with square rooms and halls badly hidden by lot's of special effects and the standard assortment of Decorate monsters.

I love this level! It feels to me most like a combination of Blood and an adventure game though, so those looking for Doom gameplay should look elsewhere. But I thought the puzzles theme was excellent, the map had some very atmospheric parts, helped by well-fitting music, and the "blockiness" didn't bother me. Too bad the other maps for this PC weren't finished.

An interesting map design using Heretic/Hexen stuff in it. The puzzle threw me off and the gameplay was a bit unbalanced, overall I liked the map layout though. 3/5.-Candle M

It does work, it requires GZDoom. The map is a big castle, which you have to shoot 5 switches to open the final room. The whole map was great, gameplay was balanced and interesting, the music was quite eerie but it fit well in the map. I kinda had a problem with the final battle since idk how to play Chess, heh. Still, the map was fully enjoyable and I heavily recommend it. 4.5/5, rounded up to 5/5. Great work. - Moti

Gameplay is boring, level's logic is an entire fabrication, architecture could be less banal and more functional, visuals needs more sector lighting.

Superb firework display of thousands of fireballs seeming in slow motion because of the vastness - mostly avoidable as they land where you were ages ago; but worth playing just to see it. A HUGE square surrounded by tiers with hundreds of imps and a few others, plus a blockhouse you can enter first to collect ammo.  Fighting through the hundreds of monsters when you get onto the tiers is another matter, overwhelming at UV. I cheated to finish so at least I could review.  Some HOM bugs.

Laggy hell with 32k monsters and too much invulnerability spheres. Just... total vomit.

Insanity, with voodoo dolls (see second screenshot).  I get the idea of a shooting gallery if that rocks your boat, but 6000 monsters behind railings- as far as the eye can see, FFS! My PC crawled when I looked towards the invuln spheres (someone said 32 k of them and you can't avoid picking up thousands at a time). In the end I cheated with god mode and no-clipping, and waded in among the chaingunners until I got bored.

Simple, clearly a first wad.  All on the flat with big, brightly lit, and architecturally implausible rooms. The first map has two rooms, the second map one, and the third map one plus a kind of exit lobby. You can do one of two things - just run past the monsters and finish (I did it in 35 seconds), or have a bit of fun killing the monsters first. No noticable bugs. I hope the author will go on (or went on) to greater things.
