High Resolution Textures w/o the High Resolution

About This File

This is an experiment to see if the high resolution textures actually make better textures than the originals. I took all the textures from the JDTP, resized them to their original sizes and put them in this wad file. Some textures came out looking much better than others. BROWN96 for example looks great, while textures like BRNGRN got its ass kicked by the doom pallete, making it more gray than green. Nonetheless it gives doom a more unique look.

Well, here goes my idea for a "Doom but not Doom" texture pack, heh. I was wondering how some of the high-res textures out there would look like when resized and Doom paletted, now I can finally find it out.

The result is...  a mixed bag. While some look really good and interesting, most of it doesn't really work. It makes everything look like a cheap Doom "knock off" project. Certainly interesting to see and I can check this off of my bucket list.

The resolutions are pretty sick and the way you don't really need to put the settings on High res. I'm just wondering if there's gonna be another one for like, the monsters or something.

FYI it breaks in G/ZDoom too. It used to work in Skulltag's 97D5. Replacing ASHWALL4 will not fix it either. Of all the textures, this one refuses to come up, it just shows one massive HOM.

These are very nice but very few textures are not true to their original appearances (BROVINE2, which is BROWNGRN + MIDVINE1, not BROWN96 + MIDVINE1) and BROVINE (which is BROWN1 + MIDVINE2, not MIDVINE1) and a few other textures. Otherwise, very good shrunkedn down high res textures. 4/5 -Mr. Chris

The HRTP looks like it was drawn with crayons to begin with; this doesn't help it any.

Meh, Nothing special. Have a better High Res than this one. Hoping this was also 3D Models. It was okay.

The guy above me appears to be wrong, I use GZDoom (1.5.6) and it works fine. I love all hi-res. 5/5 -Some Soviet

Interesting idea! Really highlights alot of areas where the JDTP has got its' shading completely wrong, which tends to ruin the classic Doom look. Thanks for taking the time to do this. 4/5

This is extremely awesome plus they don't stick out so much, a nice and smooth transition. Good for PWADs with no new graphics. 5/5

Love this WAD but there is just one problem, a brown texture does not show up properly (HOM) in the latest version of ST (load up Entryway and go into the Imp area and you'll see what I mean). Think it needs a re-upping to fix this issue. Doesn't do it on pre-98A.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
