About This File

A bit more than an episode's worth of recreations of Doom's e1m1, "Hanger", all of which were made entirely from memory. There isn't much new gameplay here, or stunning new visuals, but if you think it might be interesting to see what different Doom community members can remember about the map where It All Started, then... check this out!

More info below.

It was a good idea, but it was only interesting for the first two maps. After that it was just boring and repetitive because none of the maps are more than superficially different. I think it would have worked better with another map, because E1M1 is fairly simple and most people remember it well.

I don't think rating this wad is fair, so I'm just going to leave it at the default of 3. The goal obviously was not to make impressive maps here, the goal was to see how well people know a simple and obviously classic (since it's the first map in all of Doom, no less!) level by heart. It would make more sense to rate the closeness to the original. In that case, Enjay would be up near 5 stars while other authors would have more variable, less decisive scores (but lower overall).

This was far more entertaining than it had any right to be. Loved the map screen, too.

Three words: Enjay owns all.

^I agree, E1M4 is by far the closest comparison. 5/5 for that effort alone. Walking through a randomly-made level that looks just like E1M1 was so cool.

I think these maps deserve a big WTF.

Funny thing for some forum action, but quite pointless outside as entry in database. For me variant by Nuxius is better, because Enjay lost (->Z) his knowledge of vanilla's texture placement. *** /hth

What's the point of this piece of madness?

The point was to recreate e1m1 from your memory. Just for fun. I thought it was a really fun idea for mappers and I enjoyed seeing what everyone came up with.

Some of these were impressive, some terrible, some outright hilarious. Enjay's variant stands out as a particularly impressive reconstruction, and the one filled to the brim with Doom 2 high tier baddies was fairly amusing, if unplayable.

A set of maps dated June 2009. The idea is that each one is a recreation of E1M1 from memory; it's more a test of the designers' skills than something to play and enjoy. In that respect the authors of E1M4 and E1M5 win the prize, because their recreations are the most accurate (E1M4's final room is a bit truncated though). E1M6 notably poor, E1M8 terrible and unfinished, Map01 - with all the baddies - is actually good fun, if you dash for the BFG.

It was kinda fun to see everyone's interpretation of e1m1, and a lot of them are harder this time around. The new intermission map screen is hilarious and gets it an extra star. 4/5

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
