The Fireworks Factory

About This File

It was just like last year's Fourth of July celebration. You were tagging along with your friends and fellow Americans, watching the fireworks go off in the distance, and downing enough bottles of beer to drown out your own blood. Suddenly, however, the sparks started to look... different. They glowed a dark red, and began falling to the Earth instead of dissipating. People began to panic as the sparks landed upon them and set them fully ablaze in an instant. You, however, stayed resolute. You knew who was responsible for this: The Legions of Hell! With your trusty pistol at your side, you make your way to the nearest fireworks factory -- where your keen senses tell you the demons reside.

You will not let a bunch of hellspawn ruin the Fourth of July.

* * * * * *

This is a level I designed in less than 24 hours on the Fourth of July, 2009. After playing Qingshuo Wang's Rocketeer (ROKETEER.WAD), I was inspired to make a rockets-only level, and felt that it would be appropriate to do so on this particular day. The level uses mainly red, white, and blue textures, and I even turned the yellow keys into white keys! I implemented skill levels on this map, so if you find Ultra-Violence too hard -- and you just might -- try Hurt Me Plenty or lower. Your patriotic carnage is set to the tune of "The Star-Spangled Banner," and when you win the level, you are treated to Emanuel Leutze's famous painting, "Washington Crossing the Delaware." You can even find it in the level itself if you're eagle-eyed enough. All in all, I hope you have fun on this level, and if you're from the United States, have a happy Fourth of July!

Oh, yeah, and the level does not realistically or accurately represent an actual fireworks factory. The title is just something I felt was appropriate given the idea behind this level.

As of July 10, 2009, this WAD has been updated. (It was uploaded on July 7, but was only processed yesterday.) This new version fixes a bug that prevented 100% Kills when played in Boom, and makes other minor edits to visuals and gameplay. As of this writing, all supported mirrors have this new version except for the Texas mirror. Have fun! -TGH! (July 11, 2009. Rated "average" for the sake of balance.)

This is dated July 2009. It is intended to celebrate the date on which our country graciously gave the American colonies their freedom. You fight 129 baddies - probably a symbolic number - exclusively with rockets in a simple metallic techbase, basically one central hall with some adjoining rooms. You get loads of health and ammo and you can skip the final battle; it's more of a novelty celebration than an actual level to play and enjoy.

A(n) (almmost entirely) red, white, and blue map with all rockets for weapons and a few 4th-related music tracks. A bit easy with all the ammo at times, but fun and a nice tribute. 4/5

Hell yeah! A real American map! This is actually a pretty darn fun map, albeit short and simple.

The actual level design is actually good. But the gameplay is boring and sometimes anything but fun with those revants firing there rockets at you. There is also not really anything "American" about this map besides a MIDI version of the American anthem that plays in the background. I would have given this a 3/5 stars if the revants had not been there (or at least no so many of them) but as it stands i can't give this a higher rating then a 2/5 stars. Sorry Baker:(

quote ... "There is also not really anything "American" about this map". You obviously didn't find the secret room :p . Not bad at all. Risen3D users should put the switch -c_stairs_off on the command line.

Nothing special, really. Confined spaces, rocket launcher and an annoying revenant window. 2/5

a rocket fest; fun but too short, too much ammo and health (skill 2); 4/5

Very easy/boring for casual play but probably fun for speedrun. Nice visuals too, even though it's basically one main color for the entire map.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
