There honestly isn't much to talk about this WAD, it is pretty much a WAD of abysmal quality and has many errors that makes up the entire level. It's just a single "hallway" with missing textures everywhere after the level start, you can pretty much go outside the map, and there just isn't much to it. No point in touching this nor talking about it, a lot has already been said about it and exaggerating about isn't helpful either.

Believe the hype, Sand Chain is indeed a terrible map. Not terrible like oh this must be someone's first map or designed by a team of kinder gardeners and their friend in second grade who can use DoomBuilder, I'm talking hall of mirror walls, coupled with the fact you can go through the game's exit switches. The map is short and sweet, which only adds to how terrible it is. The level is a single hallway with... get this... a bend! Oh stay with me here... and then after that bend, there is a bank of switches! Yeah, that's it. The level isn't meant for Nightmare, but it should become everyone's first accomplishment of, "I can beat this level on nightmare."

I suppose in an artistic way, the hall of mirror affect on all walls is to disorient the player, so they miss the big twist at the end. Thus costing speed runners valuable seconds on their first play through. The big twist being the bend. Other than that, there are plenty of shotgun shells, shotgun troopers and health to ensure you make it to the end of this brutal and rigorous test of endurance over the course of 5 - 30 seconds.

This is the level that has become famous, because everyone needs to play it themselves to add their two cents of "it's crap" to the pile of reviews that will no doubt entice more people to play this game. It's a gorgeous display of everything wrong without the annoyance of having to play it for longer than a full minute. Complete with someone from an aol email to spice up it's true 1995 feel... despite being made in 2009.

* slow clap * You've done it. You've found a new twist on terrible.

Absolutely ludicrous, Now I need a new keyboard. Technically as bad as a wad can be, surely deliberate. I like to check out low-rated wads, so it's a pity that some clowns gave this  (and other bad ones) 5 stars, because averaged with correct low scores they end up with a middling rating and can be missed.

Whoa.... my eyes, this has to be the singlemost WORST map for doom ever conceived. A tunnel of HOM that is all you get here, and a noclip wall problem that lets you run into infinity. At the end of the tunnel occupied by shotgunners you get to a wall with 3 switches, Ta-Da! End of map. This is pure garbage of the worst kind avoid this one like the plague! 0/5

Um... how this did get past? This is worse than wow.wad! You don't even know how to create a map! You didn't even playtest it obliviously! This is a piece of garbage. -1/1000

pure crap and even worse! The good side is that there is no time to crate rating. How did doom builder let you make this? Even a retard can make good maps with doom builder! Which goes to show how much you suck at making maps even if you did use doom builder. 1994 is here again :( 0/5 stars -z34chris

Either he's really bad or just a newbie mapper. But since this is his only published wad I have to guess he's a amatuer. My advice is to play more maps to get ideas and read the doom builder manual and learn how to use doom builder to it's full potential.

Interesting visual effect, otherwise garbage. I've played worse wads, at least this one is short. 2 stars.

If the purpose of this is to demonstrate some quirks of the Doom engine, then fair enough, though it's nothing original. If it is an attempt to create a decent map, then it is awful. If it is a "joke", then it is pathetic.

As said above, the exit was creative. I actually had to think there for a second.

Really good puzzle map in a big dark metal/stone building. It catches the atmosphere of Bob Evans' Eternal Doom stuff, and I think there are even some homages to some other Eternal Doom maps as well (for example, the big two-layered outdoor area looks a bit like the "amusement park" in MAP26).   In my experience the puzzles were a bit easier than in "Silures" or "Excalibur", but it's possible that having played a lot of puzzle map stuff since I played Eternal Doom, having played through the whole canon of Bob Evans and Jim Flynn, and liking to search for Doom secrets in every map has made me recognize certain tropes better. The puzzles I liked most were (the spoilers only give minor hints):
Gameplay is good too, at the start ammo is scarce so the chainsaw and berserk are your friend, and midtiers say hello from the start on, but hitscanners are the biggest threat. Rockets should be saved for archviles until you find the first larger cache.   9,5/10

Fun, challenging set of maps that looks much better than you might expect for the time it was made. These maps will still slap you around a bit on HMP if you're not staying sharp. The author is fond of Chaingunner ambushes which keep you on your toes. I didn't find the SSG until around MAP05, which was cool, I like when its not given out too early. Pistol-starting the last two maps is pretty tough, but doable.   The map designs do a really good job of letting the player see crucial areas from different angles through progression and the layouts are really tidy overall, and feel a bit more modern than a lot of other 94/95 maps I've played. There are some really nice large-scale vistas (like the start of MAP06), nice uses of verticality and a good mixture of tight and more open combat.   Recommended!

Spectacular visuals and engaging combat make this an absolute must play. There's a puzzle with a "Shoot the thing" answer that kind of comes out of left field and can be an easy place to get stuck if you're not on your toes, but that hardly stops the map from being a thrilling masterpiece.

E3M9's refrain of back-tracking to a church for keys is a little tedious, and there are a few moments where things can become a frustrating key/switch hunt as you figure out what to do next, but aside from that, this an intense and rewarding adventure with beautiful lighting and architecture.
