An excellent re-imagining of Doom2 with quite a bit of difficulty progression and nice finely-honed map detailing, all while being reminiscent of the original game. This is definitely a favourite.

Took me a while finishing this megawad. I dig the city maps. Good for reference although map 30 is just another Icon of Sin clone. Maybe that's what trending that time. Not a fan of map29 as well. I spent like 2 days to figure out where should I go. 4*

really well-designed and pretty-looking starbases and city-levels in here. the music pack on DSDA makes this mod a lot more enjoyable too. it falls flat at the end with a kind of lackluster Hell episode though, and even on HMP the gameplay is a bit tedious. but for the first two thirds of the mod, it's really enjoyable to see all the pretty texture-work and level-design, and it's still fairly enjoyable to play. stick to HMP and lower, don't bother with UV, and you might find something to like if you craved Doom 2 to have a more realistic set of starbases and urban cities.

Except for that one level wherein you have to use your fists to avoid Arch-Viles, this megawad is a good alternative to the original levels of Doom 2.

If you're looking for an alternate universe version of Doom 2, look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you're looking for a version of Doom 2 made using more modern methods, this is just what you've been asking for!

Great megawad. There is a sense of progression in it, and city levels now actually look like cities. This is how Doom 2 should have been. 5/5

I think some of the early maps were some of the weakest, but the rest were fantastic - and map 32 was crazy good if you enjoy puzzles. Pretty solid for a one-man effort and interesting that it seems to be his only work as far as I know.

Don't think of this as a re-imagining of Doom 2 like I did - not unless you'd happily wish away Doom 2's frantic gameplay and abstract design for sedate battles and utilitarian architecture. Considering it on it's merits this is a pretty solid WAD, which gets progressively better as it goes on, has few serious flaws and the occasional cool trick up it's sleeve. Plus, it's a one-man vanilla compatible megawad, which is always cool.

A mixed bag. It's got some mediocre levels, some good ones as well as some outright duds. The third, Hellish episode is especially good, and a handful of earlier maps are very enjoyable as well. Most maps seem to be relatively easy but there's a sudden difficulty spike for MAP29 and MAP30.

DWMegawad club is currently acting very sniffy about this level set but I think it's aces! always thought MAP 29 was a masterpiece in particular

There are some maps which are questionable (map18 with stealth, poor architecture in map24, insane secret hunt in map32), but especially the middle episode with its amazing city maps make D2R highly enjoyable. When using PSX music/sfx, you can gain another considerable atmosphere bonus. The levels fit the original Doom II storyline, map sequence actually makes sense and you feel like accomplishing something. Outstanding one-man project anyone should play. 5/5 - NightFright

Very difficult to judge as a whole. MAP21-29 are great, MAP30 is as bad as any other Icon of Sin fight and a lot of the earlier maps ranged from awful to alright. I guess on the whole that makes it average. Took so long to beat I honestly can't remember half of what I've done. 3* - Phobus

This badboy used to be hugely popular on zdaemon (still is, just not as much), I must have played through this pack about 10 times if I add all the time spent playing together. :) 5/5 - very fun, nice new textures, interesting secrets and fights. Difficult to see anything bad about it. Loved the last episode!

Sometimes the detail is lacking, however this megawad has more good levels than bad. The above poster is correct, the PSX music wad really sets the mood. Give these levels a try!

5/5 This is one of best megawads I‘ve ever played. Especially „Mars base“ levels are incredibly designed, with their own inner logic. I really love m03 – When the blue keycard disappeared in the kitchen, I almost felt like hell itself was playing some dark twisted game with me. „Earth levels“ finally look like they are on Earth. Hell levels are imho the weakest part of this mod, although still better than average. I probably expected more of "hell like" levels rather than "dark temple" styled ones.

This is quite a fun mapset to play through, IMO not what DooM 2 should have been, but a solid one man megawad which is good in it's own right. An easy 5/5 - DeathevokatioN

Done on HMP/continuous/saves.   Top quality megawad here. Lots of incredible visuals and details, each episode has a different theme, designed with really nice custom textures. You get mountain bases, dark castles, hellish environments, huge underground caves, lunar bases, and a few secret surprises. And there's a fun adventure factor in every episode, the author not only put work into fast-paced gameplay but also exploratory settings. For example, almost all of the maps in further episodes are open spaces with platforming and walkways descending into damaging liquids, and lots of optional caves to find goodies. In addition, tight scenarios are dark and spooky, creating a real sense of suspense on what's coming. Music is really good, some of the tracks are also in Ancient Aliens. Favourite tracks are 06, 11, 22 and 27
So, like I said before, the maps are all fast-paced. Right from the beginning, you are demanded to move and find appropriate tools to get started. Nothing is overwhelming, but the usage of monsters is really well thought. Skillsaw seems to have a fetish for snipers in the form of "dead simple" enemies, because they are mostly used to harass you from different distances if you're not fast. Apart from that, he mixed incidental combat with multiple traps. From a viles+crushers maze, to a mancubus you have to guard, to a ghost town (yes, stealth monsters), or even a secret full filled with explosive zombies you'll probably panic and laugh out loud like I did.    The new monsters have their ups and downs. From the get-go, imps and demons suffered a few transformations. Upgrade pinkies are fine, creepy, bite quicker. You don't want to use the chainsaw against them, which is my only dislike because I'm fond of that weapon. On the other side, the new imps are annoying... nothing else to say. Lost souls look cool. Then, spiders have red eyes, and the smaller ones can spawn arachnorbs (mostly a cinematic effect, only problematic when telefragging the spiders), which are my favourite enemies of the set, nasty but fragile, and funny. Kamikaze troopers are like explosive balloons of meat, hilarious enemies, I simply could not get mad at them for killing me. Pyro Knights are my third favourite, I recall one instance where a cyberdemon hit a pack and they scratched him to death in a matter of seconds. Super Mancubi don't add something special, they look cool though. Cybruisers are a fair replacement for the cyber/baron in the way they were used, and also look good, but just that, and poor SMMs were deprived of their boss privileges (immunity to splash damage and loud sounds). Diabolist is a great boss, although I feel like there should have been a texture showing the monster, like in Doom there's an IoS texture.    As for weapons, well the pistol may shoot faster but it still aims like crap at any range. I did used it a lot more than the regular pistol. The minigun is awesome, and the idea that chaingunners don't drop them is good, makes it a higher valuable weapon.    Secret wise, there is a wide variety. Hidden switches, a passage behind a waterfall, a teleport on liquid floors, those are the most common. I like that some of them provide an intense fight before you get your gifts. There's a secret easter egg I found via IDDT (of course, behind a generic wall), it has a really cool effect with the music and if you have played other Skillsaw's mapsets, you'll recognize it.    Favourite maps: 06, 07, 10, 18, 22, 24, 27, 29. The rest are nice too.   Overall, yeah it's obvious that this mapset has a high value for speedrunning, but if you're a slow motion player like me, you'll still love this, just don't forget to always charge your minigun first! My rate is 9/10.

certainly a unique map from the one touted "Midtex Wizard", enough to drop a framerate considerably. still playable, and with a low monster count, it's a bit skeptical in a number of ways. it's actually a short map, but hard anyways, with scenarios to screw newbies over. the cyberdemon fight is the real standout, being sure to utilize circlestrafing to its maximum while avoiding the nukage and the rockets. it really should be longer though. as artistic as it is i expected more out of the gameplay.

for speedmaps, they do a pretty decent job and keep my eyes peeled. some actually interesting maps were made here and many were enjoyable. recommend.

When a Doom mod causes controversy, mixed feelings, and making a dev of a certain port angry, you'll bet i'll give it a good score.   Not saying because it caused controversy, it has a good score. It was a weird trip to go through, and is a really neat idea, but of course, a star had to be removed, due to my headaches and immeasurable pain this thing gave me.   Love and hate you, anotak.
