About This File

TNT: Renascence (episode 1) is a remake of the first episode (11 levels) of TeamTNT's original TNT: Evolution.

All levels are designed for 'vanilla' Doom2 or Final Doom executables and "compatible" with their limits. TNT.WAD must be used as IWAD, "-complevel 4" for PrBoom/+.

I've just finished playing all the maps, and seeing this TNT maps remade is a great feeling. Generally they are all a step above their original counter part, but also having played TNT Revilution I can't help but compare then, and putting the maps that pull the same inspiration side by side there is no contest, Renascence is left way behind, not to say there are bad, but Transduction and Fortress of Bullets are just in another League.
Now, Taking advantage that I'm talking about Revilution it's map 18 (Hell's Signs) was made by Eternal and probrably is a little glimpse of what episode 2 of Renascence could've been.

Finally, I find it very tragic that this isn't getting a sequel, but since Eternal still an active mapper so the hope isn't complete lost.

Eternal shows one more time how much he loves TNT: Evilution.

Sincerely, i can't show him how much i appreaciate this love.

It just made verything right, even the quirky designs of the original team are respected here, and impproves with hist vast knowledge an excellence on mapping.

Eternal, i can only wait for you to, someday, revisit this project and make a full Renascence for this much beloved IWAD.

Faithful recreation of the first 11 maps of TNT: Evilution, with levels similar to their original counterparts but having enough differences to make it a refreshing experience. While TNT: Evilution have its flaws and this PWAD still carries some of the more infamous ones (MAP08: Metal comes to mind), this is still a solid set of levels that captured the sense of adventure and exploration that is present in the TNT IWAD.

Remakes are never better than the originals and this happened to be a remake of something not so good.

Renascence is to TNT what Remain1 is to Doom2, sortof. Pretty good work, even if the map04 reinterpretation could be better in my opinion. ~Naan

Not bad. You did a pretty good job recreating the levels from TNT.

Captures the TNT feel very well. Not a big fan of Evilution, but I enjoyed these for the most part. Some of the original maps (Map08, Map11) just weren't salvageable, and Map06 felt like I downgrade from the original. Still, 4/5 for making tnt levels I don't hate.

Enjoyed it immensely. It kept the style of the original whilst keeping things new and with Eternal's trademark style. Very good. 5 stars. -TRRobin.

This was really awesome. I felt like I was low on ammo the first few maps but other than that the whole thing was just amazing. Good work, I'm hoping to see a remake for the rest of the maps. 5/5 -High Flyin' Ryan

Good remake, not bad for TNT fans, but it's a little hard...stopped play at map07, because I get boring on that, like the original TNT. :p 4/5 -playerlin

Some maps are better than the originals. Other maps only capture the essence. In any case good job. 5/5

ok, ill admit this is a tough 1 to rate. while it is very frustrating i gotta give gameplay a 1 of 5. design is good so that gets 4 of 5. and this gave me teh idea of mah new wad Doom 2 Rennaisance which makes me wanna rate misc. as 5/5. average=3 1/3 of 5 but ill be nice and give it 4, but only becuz it helped me create mah in-progress wad that is rly fun -TSC

MAP01 had me worried that the whole mapset was going to be too easy, as I didn't get hit once. However I'd managed to die on MAP07, so the difficulty had curved nicely. Certainly has the feel of the original, but perhaps sticks a little to close to the principles, as I'm not much of an Evilution fan. 4* - Phobus

A very impressive remake. I'm six maps in. Personally, I would have preferred if you were less faithful to the original (I don't think the original TNT is that good). Thanks for sharing.

Really good puzzle map in a big dark metal/stone building. It catches the atmosphere of Bob Evans' Eternal Doom stuff, and I think there are even some homages to some other Eternal Doom maps as well (for example, the big two-layered outdoor area looks a bit like the "amusement park" in MAP26).   In my experience the puzzles were a bit easier than in "Silures" or "Excalibur", but it's possible that having played a lot of puzzle map stuff since I played Eternal Doom, having played through the whole canon of Bob Evans and Jim Flynn, and liking to search for Doom secrets in every map has made me recognize certain tropes better. The puzzles I liked most were (the spoilers only give minor hints):
Gameplay is good too, at the start ammo is scarce so the chainsaw and berserk are your friend, and midtiers say hello from the start on, but hitscanners are the biggest threat. Rockets should be saved for archviles until you find the first larger cache.   9,5/10

Fun, challenging set of maps that looks much better than you might expect for the time it was made. These maps will still slap you around a bit on HMP if you're not staying sharp. The author is fond of Chaingunner ambushes which keep you on your toes. I didn't find the SSG until around MAP05, which was cool, I like when its not given out too early. Pistol-starting the last two maps is pretty tough, but doable.   The map designs do a really good job of letting the player see crucial areas from different angles through progression and the layouts are really tidy overall, and feel a bit more modern than a lot of other 94/95 maps I've played. There are some really nice large-scale vistas (like the start of MAP06), nice uses of verticality and a good mixture of tight and more open combat.   Recommended!

Spectacular visuals and engaging combat make this an absolute must play. There's a puzzle with a "Shoot the thing" answer that kind of comes out of left field and can be an easy place to get stuck if you're not on your toes, but that hardly stops the map from being a thrilling masterpiece.

E3M9's refrain of back-tracking to a church for keys is a little tedious, and there are a few moments where things can become a frustrating key/switch hunt as you figure out what to do next, but aside from that, this an intense and rewarding adventure with beautiful lighting and architecture.
