About This File

You know Doom, it is always the same, get some weapons, infiltrate the destroyed UAC base or demon hive, kill all the monsters and hellspawn and find the exit switch. This was Doom... until now: Stronghold is a mixture of Unreal Tournament's Assault mode and Skulltag's Invasion mode. Defend your Stronghold against hundreds of monsters, divided into several waves. Earn points, get rewards between waves and let no single enemy pass!

IMHO, works like this with an huge amount of well-crafted graphics, levels, concept and gameplay ideas cannot be badly dismissed without heavy and clear motivations. I also agree that the gameplay gets a bit repetitive after two-three hubs, but this impressive effort must be acknowledged somehow. The only bad thing, it took too many years to complete... 4/5 --rsl

This is something I've never gotten about DW since the beginning of time...why take the identity of the mapper(s) or even the source port into account when judging wads? I don't like the T667 hype machine, but it's not stopped me enjoying the wad and saying it's one of the best things I've played for a long time.

Amazing accomplishment. Everything about it is pro - level design, new equipment/monsters, gameplay types. I've never seen anything like it. Modes are varied enough to keep you interested in new challenges, and there's a few hidden goodies as well. I had to quit on the last levels due to frame rate issues, even with all the fancy lights turned off, but from what I played through I was blown away. 5/5 NT

Disappointingly uninspired level design, disappointingly dull and repetitive gameplay. A few gems of levels from Vader and Skillsaw that are worth at least ogling with cheats on, but don't bother actually trying to play this. Also don't bother trying to make up fake reasons for people not liking it: it's really just not that good.

Droning techno music along with blatant overuse of the usual amteurish overpowered recolors of the realm667 bestiary along with ugly hyperdetailed maps and topped off with gameplay that is completely unsuitable for Doom is what this overly hyped mapset is.

Refreshing take on DooM with rpg like buying system inbetween battles. Even though i truelly understand why 80 percent of the DooM fan base dont like it i actually want to congratulate 667 for trying out something totally different nonetheless. It also reminded me of the nowadays immensly popular zombie mode of COD games.

"some of the maps weren't too great but that's to be expected in any wad of this size and scale, 5/5" - a previous poster. Really? With so many man-hours/months/yea rs/aeons devoted to it? Most of the true 5/5 wads (e.g. AV, KS, S2) had no really weak maps, despite having less time spent on them per map.

disappointed by some of actually mission designs. Kinda lame with only one player, too. 2/5 overall.

I'd like this more if I didn't get those constant "you're out of lives" messages that I can't shut off no matter what I try.

If torm had dropped the idea of "Defending your stronghold" entirely in favor of the basic idea of outlasting the monsters instead of what you're supposed to protect (which would have made the giant cycloid fights actually awesome instead of annoying as piss), this would have been much more tolerable and actually fun to play. 1/5

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.

What the actual f*ck is this map. I love having 4 rockets, a shit ton of bullets and like 10 shotgun shells to take out a revenant, and whatever was in that cage. Doesn't look too bad, maybe this negativity is cus im no expert, also rather unskilled at the game?

thank god Underhalls was the map that followed this mod as that level was able to remind me what actually competent level design looks like.

Not that bad, even kind of interesting find the secrets in the map! But yeah, that switches jungle is a awful choice really.
