About This File

All levels are designed for vanilla Doom2. Recommended engines: prBoom-plus with "-complevel 2" and (G)ZDoom in "DOOM (strict)" compatibility mode. Jumping should be disabled.

For OpenGL ports like GZDoom and GLBoom-Plus you can add EPIC2GL.WAD after EPIC2.WAD for HI-RES skies: glboom-plus -file epic2.wad epic2gl.wad

Visuals and gameplay are good, he could even make a vanilla compatible wad that can take real benefits from advenced OpenGl ports. I spend lots of good hours in those maps 5/5

A fantastic megawad by one of the greatest mappers going. The rather unsettling MAP11 and the Eternal Doom 3 inspired MAP28 in particular are standouts, but the overall excellence displayed in this unusually themed mapset certainly makes it worth playing. 5 very well deserved stars -Phobus

Absolutely superb megawad. The excellent use of Exhumed / Powerslave textures and atmospheric music just absorbed me right into the game. What an experience that was. Alexander is one of the best mappers going, and one to watch! 5 stars from me, no question. -TRRobin.

If you like brown bricks, this is the wad for you! Everything is a brown brick here, walls, doors, switches... gameplay is a mixed bag, I felt it was very repetitive and got boring after 10 maps... 3/5

In this wad, a logical chain between maps can be felt. Certainly, an abundance of similar Egyptian-themed maps - wad's minus,a little one, but they are short they don't bother you much. I will especially note it's second episode, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19 maps and the third episode, with maps 21 and 29 - in my opinion, the best in this wad. The story, begun by Epic1, at last has received an end. 4.5(5)/5 -Shadowman.

Excellent map set, been playing this on and off on ZDaemon for a while now. Really enjoy the Egyptian setting. On the other hand the levels can be too vast and confusing at times which is a bit of a turn-off. 4/5.

I have to agree with some of the people here about the repetitiveness of the wad. This isn't as fun as Epic 1. The alien levels were somewhat a nice change of pace, but overall there doesn't seem to be enough variation in terms of the texture usage. A lot of the levels were the same brown textures. 3/5

Alexander S is an author capable of taking regular Doom gameplay and making it stunning. you can put a number of positive adjectives to describe this mappers mapping style, but what Eternal does is immerse players properly into the settings he provides. it's no wonder that EPIC 2 does excellently as a wad. to give an Egyptian setting, similar to Powerslave and including a few assets from that game, but also giving to the weird puzzle aspect that that game, and basically any Egyptian-themed game, provides. there's even a look into the alienverse by way of the entire second episode.

 

Eternal's style of gameplay will probably turn a few heads. there's not much for slaughter until the later maps, but what you'll notice is the intricate placement of enemies. smaller enemies are always tucked appropriately at the corners, vigil guards ready to pounce. Eternal also values the shock value with teleport ambushes, you're bound to run into some cheap one-time placements of enemies right in front, or in areas you've been to, each and every time. anticipation is a major key factor in survival, and you gotta anticipate it always. when it comes to non-combat, there's definitely a lot of immersion, as I said, there's bound to be some required puzzles in this one, so looking for hidden clues in just about every place is required. this is the kind of thing that made Eternal Doom memorable, and the kind of thing that makes Epic 2 memorable too. there's a few instances of voodoo doll magic in vanilla Doom being used as well here, notable moments include the rising exits in MAP12 and MAP13, which use a barrel to push a voodoo doll to the exit linedef. a few more cases exist where the same barrel is used to push a voodoo doll to telefrag another one, these are used to show areas that are supposed to spell death if you enter them, such as the voids in MAP14 or the red lasers in later maps.

 

level-wise, aside from obvious Egyptian setting games being inspirations as well as a few Aliens-themed places in the second episode, the levels are memorable. although none manage to be in the top 100 most memorable maps, they damn sure come close. Luxor (MAP26), Ammut (MAP27), and Mortuary (MAP29) pay lip service to slaughtermaps, offering bits of exploring in between some nasty combat sections. Ogdoad (MAP28) is a love letter to the classic map Darkdome from Eternal Doom, and Osirion (MAP31) is an ode to the great Misri Halek of Alien Vendetta. The Tower (MAP11) evokes shades of Epic 1's The Citadel, while Mebius (MAP13) gives us a Hunted-style ordeal in a spaceship, fit with health stations. the rest of the maps definitely have shades of cool originality to them, and there's hardly a single dud to find. It's bona fide immersion into something that still is Doom but isn't Doom, yet plays exactly like Doom so it is Doom done differently.

^Very true, in fact this is one of the only megawads I know of that wasn't specifically designed to support coop but is easily the most fun on survival, better than solo IMO.

All the themes of levels felt samey. This is probably because it's one person making map after map. It doesn't help that there are only two styles (not threee or four like UDoom) of maps. I guess Eternal is the new Slige, judging from the samey blandness of maps and the fact that he's a mapping computer programmed by IBM. Besides, the first epic.wad is hugely better and it has an extremely better tower level. Shame the first didn't have a single alien ship level.

      This mapper did create good stuff, pazuzu, diabolos and odyssey. This is way, way below these WADs. I am the first reviewer to mention massive (but massive) HOMs on MAP10! 2 stars for: - awesome grey blocks area in motion in the middle of MAP08 - some occasional decent moments, I guess MAP03 is fine, MAP04 is okayish. - visually it is not bad for 1996. But come on. One motif is: "press switch A to lower a lift, press switch B that opens a door somewhere far, but press it a bit later, just to get in time to the lift, not too early as the door will shut". After that door you often have a wall of monsters, so sometimes you retreat and repeat. This motif is used over and over and over again. You also experience cramped mazy hallways quite a lot and lots of damaging floors. Some of these damaging floors are used for extra spice during combat, but most of them are there to make you think faster about the puzzle solution :) It is not easy for me to pick the worst map, MAP05, 07 and 09 set the bar quite high. And it is me who is writing this, I enjoy cleim20, odessas, some cryptic stuff, but I just can't stand >80% of this creation.

      Yeah, this is what Doom is supposed to be. Basic and enjoyable, no gimmicks or stupid sound/graphic mods. Just pure Doom. This is a keeper.

      Another day, another stolen map.   E2M1 of IMMLEV is a ripoff of ARENA, a tutorial WAD David Bruni designed and wrote detailed tutorials for in the 3D Alchemy book. Walbert's edit of it was so incompetent that four times out of five it will crash vanilla seconds into the level with a "P_CrossSubsector" error. Crispy and prboom-plus crash every time.   Oddly enough, Choco loads the map without complaints but you get stuck early on due to the "author" apparently using a paper bag over the head as a map-editing tool.   The second map is largely a barebones crate maze. A secret door next to the first key leads to an unmarked exit that dumps you on the stock secret level. Too bad, as the third level finally shows a glimpse of promise, albeit somewhat marred by HOM and mislabeled key doors. This, too, is apt to an abrupt end with another unmarked exit switch.

      The difficult of some maps (mainly after MAP 20) is rather extreme in UV if you aren't an experienced/very good player. For others I recommend playing in HMP or even HTNR if you don't want many frustating moments. Best maps = 04, 06, 07, 08, 11, 15, 32, 18, 20, 22, 28, 29 and 30. Bad Maps = 05, 31, 23, 25 and 26. All other maps are OK. Now, some considerations: MAP 24 is very good until the archvile spam, after that it's almost impossible to beat if you don't get the secret invulnerability sphere. MAP 26 is a gimmick map with a lot of archviles, I didn't enjoy the gameplay because if you shoot in some parts you die right away due to the sheer numbers of viles. MAP 29 at first seem very hard and frustating but its doable if played with persistance. The only bad thing about it is the mandatory archvile jump which I didn't aprove (if you play it you'll see what I'm talking about). UV maxing this MAP would be a nightmare since the red key area is very hard; I've yet to see anyone at youtube or twitch UV maxing this map without saves. As I think only 5 MAPS out of 32 are bad it deserves at least 4 stars.
