About This File

Megawad, based on "winter" theme from Russian Doom Community. The demons have decided to ruin the winter's fun of Christmas and New Year's celebrations to people, so your task is prove those stupid bastards wrong. The base of this megawad are 12 improved maps (map 01 - map 06, map 08-map 11, map 14, map 16) from speedmapping contests ¹5, which took place on 19.12.2010 on iddqd.ru forum. The rest levels were added some time later, some maps were seriously reworked, and others have been put in wad almost without any changes at all. Have a good game.

Done with these settings:

- GLBoom+ 2.5.1.4. complevel 9.

- Hurt Me Plenty.

- Continuous combined with a pistol start mindset.

- Saves every 10 minutes or so.

Nice mixed bag over here. First of all, snowy ambient in Doom is awesome, definitely one of my favourite custom themes. Some neat use of the textures and details, also a lot of misaligned walls and a few HOMs here and there, which I didn't care so much to be honest. Maps have caves, castles, mountains, platforming and even damaging water (perhaps too cold for doomguy's feet?), and a great usage of light variations, notable in the caves, a feature that made gameplay more enjoyable. In addition, a great collection of midis, of which two tracks were, unusual for the game (maps 12, 14).

There are a couple of things to mention in terms of progression. On one side, most maps start similar, and excluding the bigger ones, all are pretty straightforward, so chances of getting lost are practically null. On another side, I'm not too sold on the difficulty's progression. I had way too many troubles in an early map, compared to the rest of the wad, which had it's ups and downs in monster placement. For example, in map 01 you get to kill lots of enemies in very open spaces, not hard at all but there are further maps that could have fit better in the first slot. As for map 03, this was the toughest of all for me, making the subsequent maps a cakewalk until slot 13. Between those two, there are several maps that fit their slots but also other ones, particularly 07 and 10, that lack substance and purpose, and could have perfectly been in slots 01 and 02, or expanded in some way. In regards to pros, exploration and puzzles are not only present but main factors in several maps. One of the standouts is map 12, the Boom one, obscure switch-hunt but plenty of nice tricks, like shooting ice columns to reveal enemies (one thing, at the mancubi tech room, there are two panels, to open the door hit the panel without the tiny switch, but hit the upper side, you have to either jump or use something to reach it).

When I think of secrets, map 08 stands out as the secret-hunt one of the set. You need to find your weapons, otherwise you are bound to ignore every living being. There's another map where a secret is crucial to solve a puzzle for progression, you have to find a switch that enlighten the way to reach some switches, I actually liked it because it was very useful, but I get it can put off some players. Most maps don't have secrets, uh whatever.

My favourite maps are 08, 12, 15 and 32, this one is a bit of a joke map so don't take it seriously. The others are ok, and I didn't like maps 07, 10 (both too short) and 16, another typical IoS with timed lift, too many cube shooters, which leads to too many flying crap, and a lame start (seriously?).

Anyway, kind of liked it overall. The puzzle and exploratory maps worth it, I'd recommend those above the rest. And (continuous) players, use PrBoom+ complevel 9. My rate is 6/10

I love it. on MAP08 there's a "seasons" puzzle and it is a really good adventure map. the short maps are fun too.

Neat maps. Not as detailed as Whitemare 2 but more fun overall, and less frustrating elements. I didn't finish the last map since it was basically the same as WM2's map30's ending, and I didn't play map32 because killing a 10000 health monster without a BFG would be stupidly long and boring. Anyways, good stuff, mostly. 5/5

Very nice megawad. I usually don't care much for single player megawads, but this one is an exception. 4/5

This isn't bad, but IMO it doesn't deserve 4 1/2 stars. Jenesis 2 and PRCP are better MW's from 2011, this is more on par with PCCP, very varied quality. Still some maps are worth it, so it's not an unworthy download entirely. 3.49/5

Fairly original and well done maps, with some absolute classics. Interesting bg music too. Cheers.

Pretty cool (heh) set of speedmaps with a few larger non-speed maps in a kind of Winter-ruins theme. It's flawed as hell but interesting regardless(and map15 is a fucking journey)

Maps 11 & 15 are amazing! 01, 06, 12, 13, 14, 16, 31, 32 are good too =) as you see, most good maps are located in 2nd half of this wad. Moreover, maps have really different difficulties, but this does not matter. However, some levels are weak and have some lack. So, i give this wad 4 stars

I like the winter theme, though almost 20 of them in a row might be a bit too much. Should have cut the worst ones out. Some maps were really fun while some were quite...not that good. Some fitting music, but mostly meh 3* (could easily have been 4* with a few changes)

I have to admit that the hectic beginning that is Map01, got me ticked off at the beginning. But in total this wad isn't bad at all. I do agree with the previous reviewers that 20 maps with the same theme in a row can get a bit too repetitive... But this was a fun ride. You should give this a try if you're bored. 3.5(4)/5 - Moti

Nice theme, fitting music, good action. This rules already! I have to work and I can't stop!!! Maybe this is so good, maybe I have a long time since I last played Doom. 5/5 - Optimus

Some maps look really good, some play really well - most were a bit flawed or just not too much fun though. The theme was well executed, and perhaps on a lower difficulty the less fun maps would have been better. MAP32 was brilliant, IMO. 3* -Phobus

Not too crazy about russian style gameplay. Seems to be purposefully awkward, severely restricting movement with chaingunners on ledges, multiple arch viles with no cover, etc. At times it looks like they want to frustrate the player. Some maps are heinous (map 12 made me idclip straight to the exit in frustration and anger... like, f**k this, i'm out of here). Some are really good though, foreshadowing the much, much nicer sequel. Play WM2 for a mo' better experience!

I like the winter theme and the updated sprites and textures, but the levels - the first few that I played, anyway - just weren't that good. Maybe the latter ones are better, but the first couple didn't make me want to continue. 2/5 - ZZ

An enjoyable set of maps of easy difficulty (MAP 07 is medium) in UV with simple design that worked well for me. Finished the whole set in 02:40 min. Certainly worth a shot!

I rarely quit a wad in disgust, but this one did it. It was pushing a 5 star experience, but then the slaughter stupid started ~map19 and only got worse. It's not clever, not amusing and absolutely not entertaining. It ruined an otherwise good wad and left a very sour taste. Why do mappers do this? Played on HNTR and it really was that bad.

I have a real blast while playing this megawad. Think that Quake is not brown enough? You will get the ultimate browness here. I think that, beside the simplistic ugliness of it, it gives a good cohesive look to all the maps. And this one are really big and fun to explore. The ideas of cities, fortresses, islands, canyons and caves, and finaly tech base on moon, are really neat and some looks really good. The story of the wad is pretty good, too. I love the liberties that the author takes while doing this mapset. As i played a lot and i found this kind of ideas in a few wads along the way.
What i didn't like it much, is that there wasn't other skies than the episode one sky from Doom 2. Again, i think it is that way for a cohesive storytelling, but anyway, it would be cool to feel the sense of time in the maps with different skies and shadows deploying in differents ways along the maps.

This could be the Eternal Doom of doom stock textures, but the linearity of the maps, aside from the somewhat empty but interesting areas to explore, departs slighty from the formula, and there are not soo much details as one might expect from a mapset like this. Don't get fooled by that, even with the somewhat Heretic-like linearity, the maps are fun, gorgeous in its brownway and pretty challenging.
I recommend this megawad to anyone that likes to explore and have a challenge in the vein of the best of team TNT mapsets.

I liked it better than Claptrapino. Maybe because I'm a novice level maker too. Obviously it's the work of a newbie, but I absolutely understand how it might have taken 10+ hours. I think I've spent at least that long and haven't even completed any levels yet.   I actually thought it was an interesting basic concept to start in the middle of a maze, with areas you've previously cleared not guaranteed to be safe anymore with the portals and spawns. I died twice in my attempts and finished the third time. When I realized that staying in place, conserving resources and clearing wasn't working I took the invulnerability and just ran through the halls spraying high damage weapons.   The level did seem unfinished though. What are the keys for? Are there secrets in the level that contain locked doors?

Yes, this is a legendary megawad. Yes, there is a lot of positives to say about it.
But I can't ignore the button madness present in many levels. In the second half of the games this gets utterly insane - you WILL spend most of the time bashing and shooting every inch of every wall to find yet another hidden switch to be able to progress. Many switches open hidden doors in an unrelated location on the other side of the level without even telling you. Some levels have switches completely invisible and one of them even hides switches in random decoration sprites like trees. I'm sorry but this was no fun and in the end it ruined the entire megawad for me.
