No offense to this wad, but I've seen plenty of stuff like this done by other authors who weren't established names in the DOOM wad author scene, and no one gave a shit. This is getting more attention and plays simply because of who made it and how connected they are. I guess there are politics no matter where you go. 3/5.

To the above reviewer: Probably you're missing (or don't care about) the fact that this wad features much tighter and better balanced gameplay than just about any other more-or-less E1-styled wad. Before criticizing other people's perception of something, remember that they may be appreciating things that you're not seeing. Frankly, the Ralphis name made me think this wad would be shit, but I got a very pleasant surprise.

It's ok. Effort went into the look, but it's pretty middle-of-the-road and not particularly memorable. All the levels look about the same and have every e1 (and some e2) element thrown together, giving no real sense of progression. Health is really scarce, so you gotta go slow, and once you drop below 25% it's an exercise in frustration due to the hitscanners all over. Levels are big, making secrets needle-in-haystack experiences. 3/5, mostly for effort.

I think this is 5* legendary material. The maps are big and well crafted, the gameplay is very challenging on UV, but perfectly doable. The secrets are well-hidden, usually quite clever and tend to be rewarding and I didn't get bored once in my 3+ hour play through, spread over a few days. My one complaint is that a lot of the traps in the later levels end up being "fuck you"s more due to the limited space that you're fighting in and require a bit of foresight to get out of alive. -Phobus

I am in the 3rd level so far and this is something I will play to finish. Even if I started getting lost already. Preety big maps with lot's of secret that I know I won't find all of em. I had a long time to play such a good remake! 4.5/5 - Optimus

This is good, but I really feel like there should some balance in the comemnts - it's good, but not 5 star awesome. Architecture can be hit and miss: sometimes it's retro in a good way, sometimes in a bland way. Gameplay is hit and miss: keeps you on your toes but can also lapse into a by-the-numbers slugfest. 3/5

Non-stop action wherever you go. I never play a full WAD and I usually get bored within an hour, but this caught me to the point of saving day to day and keep playing. It has its own merits even to earn a Cacoward, and a smart wink to the classic DooM style. 5/5, they deserve it.

Just brilliant. Chock full of secrets, traps, enemies, interesting architecture, everything you could possibly ask for in an Episode 1 replacement. An instant classic!

Good concept, but the maps are way too big and with too many monsters for E1 design, which is meant for relatively small and easier maps. E1M1 has over 100 monsters. E1M9 has well over 400 monsters in a huge map. E1M8 assaults you with about half a dozen Cyberdemons and Spider Masterminds. A note for future mappers, if you have to use Cybers and Spiders in E1 (even as a final boss), you're doing Episode 1 wrong.

I agree with the third reviewer. It's not just because this is an E1 replacement, but because doom was never meant to have huge maps. Plutonia, the hardest IWAD, still had like 100 monsters per level. 400+ monsters only makes the maps dull.

5/5 - Excellent layout that guides your movement around the maps, and good architecture/texturi ng. It's OG Doom taken to its logical (and enjoyable) extreme with you mowing down hordes of the damned with E1M7 having no less than 580 enemies. Lots of thoughtful ambushes with the rest of the Doom squad mixed in (Cacos, Souls) intelligently. Stylistically consisent until E1M8 which is nuts but very doable when you learn to corral Cyberdemons. - KMX E XII

For other Ultimate Doom remixes, there's also Wonderful Doom and Ultimate Needs More Detail. I love seeing wads like this. 4/5

^Hell Revealed? Alien Vendetta? Speed of Doom? Other classic slaughtermaps/mapset s? All are clearly contra-examples to that statement. Anyways this is great.

So fucking good level with E1 style.(But have all of weapons and many cyberdemons. :p) E1M1-E1M6 and E1M9 are ok and fun. But I skipped E1M7 and E1M8 because I feel boring and just fast run in there with noclip cheat. E1M8 is annoying for me due cyberdemons and other weak monsters always kicked my ass when I'm try finding ammo in that level...and I rage quit. :( This is a nice mapset but I think everyone should try it even I don't really like it. 3.5/5 -playerlin

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
