About This File

An Episode 3 replacement for HERETIC. The episode is laid out so that levels 1-3 are inspired by E1, levels 4, 9, and 5 by E2, and levels 6-8 by E3. Expect a boss fight every 3rd level. I tried to make the difficulty progress nicely so that the beginning is easy but by the end you'll be given some tough fights. I also tried to balance ammo so that each level could be completed from "elvenwand start".

A source port that can support DECORATE (ZDoom or Vavoom) is required to run this episode. However, the wad was designed and plays in a rather old-school manner. If you choose to play this levelset you will see why I did it this way. I hope this doesn't stop purists from enjoying the levels. I disabled crouching and jumping, and to make the experience more classic, you should refrain from using freelook if you can. I STRONGLY recommend ZDoom because it renders the levels exactly as I intended them; Vavoom does not.

This is a LOT of fun. Weird that people complain it's hard, i played it on black plague and it was fairly tame. The levels are pretty simplistic in geometry but are absolutely gorgeous. Enemy placement is pretty varied all throughout, the levels don't feel repetitive and for the most part are pretty open.

If you haven't played it yet, i highly recommend this, whether you've played much Heretic or not, and even as an entry point if you haven't played Heretic yet.

Medium quality WAD, notable mainly for it's hardcore features. I came across it while testing modifications, so I will briefly describe it.

Settings and other:

* GZDoom.

* Passed in combination with Heretical Doom. It goes well.

* Difficulty - "magister" (analogous to "Ultra-Violence" from Doom).

* Some secrets.

* 9 moderately compact levels and few (on average within 150) monsters.

* Metal heads and minotaurs, which were relatively rare in the original and especially were mini-bosses, can be found here regularly and not in single quantities.

* There will be a sequential fight with two bosses at the end, but both, in comparison with the original Heretic and groups of enemies at normal levels, do not pose much of a danger.

* 100% of secrets found.

Pros:

d21870e257661a961ee9091e70d332af.png

+ E3M5 - Castle of Sorrow. Not a bad level with 148 opponents. At the end, a battle with 6 minotaurs awaits. On the same map, I abandoned testing HeXeReTiC Fantasy earlier - it is hardly passable and the excessive randomness of it became completely clear.

+ E3M6 - The Unholy Font. "water" map.

Contras:

? On the map E3M9 - Forgotten Chapel you can pick up 1 secret only with wings and another one, apparently, is bugged, which is why you cannot pick up a weapon and kill 1 enemy.

This manages to be classic yet doesn't rehash well-worn territory. An awesome set of levels for Heretic!

Best WAD for Heretic ever... because just when you think you've finished, you realise that there's even more. It's good to see a new Boss in Heretic that actually feels like it belongs. Problem is the Morph Ovum can turn him into a chicken :P 6/5

Very high quality - the design of these levels brilliantly encompasses all default Heretic map themes in a very stylish way. 5* (played with Heretic++, very recommended too!!)

And out of nowhere comes...a wonderful new Heretic episode! Might not quite be the next Curse but actually it's currently rated higher and I'm adding to the five-train with another deserved 5/5.

Excellent work, with a nice "old school" feeling and a very clever placement for the secret areas. It is one of the few wads which made me replay it just to try to get those secrets I missed the first time. Again ! Magma/07-2011 - 5/5

A new fantastic Heretic episode. It's the fourth best episode I've played. I prefer Carnage Galore I&II and Curse of D'Sparil, but this is the way. 5/5

AWESOME. If only I could rate higher than 5/5... This is like summing up the whole game in one episode!

A very nice map set for anyone who enjoy classic Heretic like I do. An unfortunate rarity. Please everyone make more of these projects that respect the source material. 4/5, Kristus.

the maps are good. the final fight with avatar, can however be skipped if you go back, activate the 2 switches and dodge his attacks. this is the general flaw of wad but overall it's good! i will give this 3/5 for effort! :)

      These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

      A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

      Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

      Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

      It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
