1994 Tune-up Community Project

About This File

Everybody knows that most maps from 1994 are pretty terrible, but what if we took maps from the archive that permit modification and then redetailed them?

The purpose of this community wad is to improve on maps from 1994. Most maps from that time had strong layouts, but poor design decisions such as misaligned textures, bad texture choices, hidden doors and mandatory secrets to progress. The aim of this project is to fix those problems and take what was already strong about the original maps and improve it.

Excellent old school dooming. It's like going back in time and playing the best maps that could be possibly done. I also haven't had this much fun on a wad in ages. This gets no less than 5 Stars from me.

Extremely nice, but a few game bugs that try to stick to their original wads. 4/5

Great concept and pretty good execution too. Found a few texture errors throughout the maps but nothing that breaks it. Music credits would be nice. Where the HECK is map17's music from? It's so familiar..

"These hypocrites re-do maps somebody else created and they're applauded and it's called a work of art." The original mappers are fully credited and their original work and text files are also included, moron. Maybe the original maps WERE steaming heaps and the revised maps are just better. Get over it. And next time you slate a project, make sure you know what you're talking about.

So you turned a bunch of shitty 1994 maps into equally shitty 2011 maps? Great job.

It wasn't executed in the best possible way, but I certainly beg to differ with anyone who says it's a waste or that it didn't respect its goal at all. The maps have definitely all been improved, sure some aren't great in 2011 still, but I think every one has some new life breathed into it, and there are some real gems of tune-ups (like Map29, for instance). It's really just like every other community project a grab bag and even if I ignored the concept and treated it as new maps I'd still call it decent. 4

Taken as a whole I enjoyed this megawad, but the quality of maps vary. Some of them are great, but on the other hand some of them looks like from year 1994 even after the modifications. 4/5 - Damned

An excellent idea and I cannot wait to contribute to a follow up project, if any. Also the map by Major Rawne is excellent despite a few minor graphical embarrassments. - Major Rawne

New life has been breathed into these relics. They're not all winners, but they've all received a touch-up that makes them MUCH more playable 18 years later.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.

What the actual f*ck is this map. I love having 4 rockets, a shit ton of bullets and like 10 shotgun shells to take out a revenant, and whatever was in that cage. Doesn't look too bad, maybe this negativity is cus im no expert, also rather unskilled at the game?

thank god Underhalls was the map that followed this mod as that level was able to remind me what actually competent level design looks like.

Not that bad, even kind of interesting find the secrets in the map! But yeah, that switches jungle is a awful choice really.

A basic and nice looking showroom type of map where monsters are trapped inside glass prisons, no exit and no way to play this with any modern source Port like DSDA-Doom and GZDoom, but works really well in Crispy Doom. It was a pleasant experience.
