Doom the Way id Did

About This File

"At some point in time I got the idea that it would be really fun if John Romero dusted off the ol' doom editor and made another map for Doom episode 1 for old time's sake. He once replied to an email saying 'maybe I will!' but never did get around to it as far as I know.

This project asks the contributors to carefully study the original maps and try to make them as John Romero and Sandy Petersen did.

The guiding principle in the project is to pretend that id Software initially intended to release Doom as a three episode, 30 level game, but somehow lost three levels; one from each episode.

The mappers for the project are trying to create those lost tenth levels, except we are extending this concept to be a full 3 episode replacement.

Our goal is to make the 'lost' maps as authentically as possible to be convincingly mistaken for original levels from the game, to recreate Doom the Way id Did."

I very like retro wads. E1 is a solid 5.5. E2&3 are basically great, but imho often too dark and have too much slime/lava, which lowers playability, so 4/5. Overall: 4/5, and a must-play for retro fans.

Gameplay is simply boring and the design is generic and repetitive. OK, so those were essentially part of the vaunted plan for this wad. While you might say that the goals were achieved well, you could also argue that the goals weren't worth achieving. "Best Doom wad ever?" Come now.

Better than most 1990s-era episode replacements, while staying faithful to the originals. A good, modern re-interpretation of The Ultimate DooM.

Really impressed with this level pack. A few rough spots here and there, but other than that it is a very amazing map pack. 4/5, and also going to try out the recently-released follow-up :)

5 stars, I think this pretty well succeeded IF you play it without a modern style source port. Even if you don't, or fail to get that ID feeling, I think it's fairly undeniable that there are 27 excellent maps! This, 2002ADO, and NMD would now be the best three Doom I megawads, IMO by far.

Such a good set of maps. Almost makes me double back on Doom's original levels and think they're not as good as I thought they were compared to these lovely maps.

I enjoyed playing through this megawad and I get the right nostalgic feeling. The interpics were also great and in the classic style of Doom 1. However I expected something memorable. In whole mapset, I haven't found any map, that gave me a WOW and it can become repetitive after some time. I know, it is great piece of work, but maybe I am not the right audience for this. 4/5 - Damned

For those who can't get enough of classic pwads imitating the style of the original episodes, this is definitely what you will need to download. It's well done, it's fun, and id would probably also want you to play it. 5/5 - NightFright

Will never be as good as the real thing or spark the same memories but if you still enjoy Doom I it's a 99% chance you'll enjoy this. It's pretty much as much of a success as it could be, as I simply don't think it's possible to truly match up to the memories of the original. I think part of why the original has so many memorable levels is simply the fact that it WAS the original, and that's a trait no wad can ever replicate, not to mention it takes lots more to truly make a memorable level now vs then. 5/5

I played Doom since the early 2000s, and this definitely gave me a feeling of utter nostalgia. The things that I particularly liked was that it didn't try too hard very often of going overboard with key/switchhunts and the boss battles were a lot more like actual boss battles augmented with imposing level design for their areas. Only problem was no E4.

Yeah it's... not very good. I liked the idea but the level design simply isn't memorable or particularly fun. In fact, I think the games were even more maze-like than the originals. Sorry guys. 2/5

5-star quality wad, without question. This should wash out the aftertaste of all the shitty wads we've endured in the past year. 5/5

A reinvention of a new and modern classic, if that makes any sense. Brought me back to way back when when I used ctrl and space. 5/5 -Acid

One of the classic megawads, and the successor to TNT Evilution. I've played this several times over the years, and its grown on me more with each play as my tastes mature.   Still has a bunch of maps that got me killed in 2024, after ive finished stuff like HR and AV, and plenty of maps are memorable. Only real downsides is some of the levels have little content, showing its age.

One of the earliest Doom user maps and It shows. Despite the raw and empty design, the author take a good use of 3D space creating a small fortress surrounded by mountains, the level Is fun to play and not hard. A fancy escapade and a piece of modding history.

Third and final released map of a WIP episode by David Rager, it's more long, complex and hard than the previous entries in the series. A well made map with pretty challenging parts with a mix of monster usage, envoirnmental hazards and some puzzle gameplay. Fun but pretty harsh.

Two more misplaced DM maps without a exit like QUDOOM (that at least had a exit room, while not functional) that caught me by their file name and leave me for the bad experience in SP. Chicken is just a long bridge between a thundering abyss where cyberdemons wants to destroy you, meh. Gangstar is a more fun map sets in a big, abstract warehouse where a cyberdemon roam free trying to kill you, shotgunners and lost souls are here in this Hell corner adding more pain to the thing, enforced by semi-hidden mazes, my favorite.

This is like the physical version of the "we have X at home" meme in DM map format for Quake E1M1. Very poorly made, broken exit and missing textures here and there but at least the level KINDA resembles the original source somehow.
