About This File

The experience of playing through Knee-Deep in the Dead is one that many gamers will never forget, but through the years the episode has become too easy for many to play through and enjoy the way they did the first time.

Knee-Deep in ZDoom is an interpretation of Id Software's original groundbreaking production, Knee-Deep in the Dead. The team has focused on expanding the original episode by utilizing the power of Randy Heit's ZDoom port; adding new areas, features, and gameplay devices not possible under the original Doom engine. Knee-Deep in ZDoom is a new experience, but holds strong to the atmosphere of the original. Relive the fear. Relive the nightmare. Relive Phobos.

KDiZD is an amazing, legendary piece of work, and the amount of effort put into its creation is truly impressive. The maps are visually stunning, and, while each map includes the layout of its KDiTD counterpart, there are huge additions to each, and you'll find some great new weapons, monsters, and many surprises. It is true that gameplay is occasionally repetitive and there is perhaps too much backtracking, but if you can look past the hype, KDiZD is still sure to leave you breathless. 5/5 -Reckoner

I disagree with the cries of "too much detail"; there's no such thing. The problems with KDiZD, visually at least, are the extreme inconsistency in style and lots of amateurish architecture/texturi ng mixed in. Some areas looked like the literal child of Torm's Detail Guide. Lights, computers, and borders, with little creativity. The gameplay is full of tedious switch puzzles and key hunts. The crane section in z1m6 is the best part of the entire wad; very very cool. -essel

It showed a lot of potential, but tries too hard and falls short. It's a patchwork of different styles and varies from good gameplay to bad. Some parts are brilliant, while others are uninspired and bland. Much is so detailed it's actually ugly, and some is so dark the detail doesn't matter anyway. Overall, very average.

Feels like doom got sick of being doom ... just like most classic movie remakes recently. While some individual efforts in this are simply amazing the whole thing feels like stepping into a bubblegum on the carpet in your living-room. Quite disappointing the project turned out this way ... would like to see some more from this team, but please not another "let's re-invent doom" kind of project. A few more mappers keeping an eye on the "quality control" for the gameplay, wouldn't harm either. 3/5

Try this with the music addon, which is great, 5/5. But I also tried it with the doom 3 sounds wad...added a lot of ambient noise and made it even more incredible.

detail is good, but this wad features such boring gameplay that will make you smash your computer with an axe. This is what gives doom a bad name, kids, avoid. 1/5

Really great fun from start to finish. Not every mans cup of tea and I can respect that. Though for me I really had alot of fun with this, much more even than many modern FPS games.

What the hell is up with the "Miraculous Purple Gay Dildo" secret in Z1M10? Minus one star for that disturbing easter egg = 4stars

good idea, Horrible Execution. Feels as if it were taken apart and slapped together at the last minute. And to think it was supposed to be a one-month project.....It's "pretty", but... meh. ~Csonig

My diatribe against this wad is that it uses the entirety of the original levels as a starting point for the level design. Now normally I would say that’s fine. The gripe, however, is that the authors put in a colossal amount of work into this wad and yet declined to make original maps. That is… unfortunate. On the positive, the art style really astonishes, the new monsters and weapons breathe new life into the game-play and the other features are executed very well. 5/5

What really breaks this apart from dragging out even the shorter maps with the useless 6-key searches are the custom monsters. Those shadows suck ass, they are too small to get enough bullets to connect with their puny bodies to kill them before they rain overpowered fire onto me. Their obituary is hardly written in let alone engrish "%o was assasined by a Shadow." That's pitiful. The intro was awesome, though. The biggest mistake was that KDITD wasn't meant to be scary, there's no "nightmare".

Get ready for: Uninteresting 15x bigger level design each with TOTALLY RAD 6-key/switchhunt filler, NEW monsters all with overpowered attacks that shoot lasers out their asses and run at 100 mph, and AWKWARD detailing with a billion sectors and dynamic lights and lensflares (because we all know that lensflares are awesome) in 1 square-foot radius and none the next! Relive the fear. Relive the nightmare. Relive Phobos as imagined by some german dude popular on a mediocre forum.

Exhausting is indeed the right word for this level-set. This rating is based on up to Z1M6, and after three hours I'm constantly lost, somewhat wow'd and sickened by the detail in the maps (Great outdoor areas!), curious as to why we have three classes of Dark Imps, and actually hoping for more traps. This was indeed overhyped, but it doesn't suck, either. Due to the amount of effort put into this monster, I'll give it a 4 and pass around the recommendation anyway. --Project Dark Fox

This is a wonderful wad hands down. Though I know I'm not the only one who feels like crap about her/his levels after seeing something as amazing of this. This honestly how I always imagined doom. many different breeds of the same monster. The new weapons added new tactics to my part and the levels aren't that confusing. Then all the new enemies as said before was a very good touch. It's nice to see at least one new monster introduced in a level. 5/5

I find it extremely interesting how Glassyman is the first reviewer. The levels are Epic (Perhaps too large), and this is seriously something you must experience.

Frankly, I hate overly cryptic Hexen-type puzzles that span the entire map and that is only worsened when the map is artificially bloated to 5x larger than it has to be. That would have instead been tolerablt had it been one map instead of 10.Z1M8 would have been gorgeous and been rated much higher had it simply been released by itself. Maybe what the team should have been worrying about was remaking the boss levels instead of all the rest of them and concentrate their efforts on that.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
