About This File

The experience of playing through Knee-Deep in the Dead is one that many gamers will never forget, but through the years the episode has become too easy for many to play through and enjoy the way they did the first time.

Knee-Deep in ZDoom is an interpretation of Id Software's original groundbreaking production, Knee-Deep in the Dead. The team has focused on expanding the original episode by utilizing the power of Randy Heit's ZDoom port; adding new areas, features, and gameplay devices not possible under the original Doom engine. Knee-Deep in ZDoom is a new experience, but holds strong to the atmosphere of the original. Relive the fear. Relive the nightmare. Relive Phobos.

Levels are beautiful, but become frustrating as hell pretty quick. New monsters look great but seem redundant (3 types of pink demons??). This really didn't get fun for me until I found the new weapons. They are simply fantastic. Great balance and highly satisfying to use. Kind of rubs me the wrong way that the rifle, the best new weapon, can only be found on the secret level. So a mixed bag. 3/5. I'll rip it off when I'm not sure how to design my next room.

You know if you were going to use deathz0r's Doom E1M9 song then you should ahve ASKED. Not giving credit or asking permission is not cool. Plus taking other textures from other wads with out asking also is not cool.

Meh, it's not as spectacular and "legendary" as most people make it out to be. This is like the Halo 2 of Doom mods. The levels looked great, the new enemies looked cool, and the intro was sweet, but the overall gameplay was pretty boring. There was way too much backtracking. 4/5

Map 1 was boring as hell, map 2 was mediocre, and map 3 was seriously one of the worst maps I've ever had the misfortune of playing. Luckily, the rest of the maps were MUCH MUCH MUCH better. Levels 6 and 8 were both really really good and very much worth playing. If you find yourself frustrated with the first few levels just change the map to Z1M9 and play from there. Giving this 4/5 because the latter maps are 5/5 quality and the earlier maps are 2/5 quality.

Its good! the gameplay at the start really gets you excited, but it gets kinda repetative with all that wondering if you miss one little thing and having to battle a baron of hell with just a chain saw just because of the short notice, and my severe lack of ammo, but I kinda like the detail of everything and the suspense (well sometimes)-Adam3

Oh. My. God. I had to wipe the drool from my face when I first loaded this. This is beyond awesome. I wonder what Doom 2 would be like if it were done in a similar way.

Despite the excess hype over the past 3 years, I have to give it the thumbs up. I really enjoyed this from start to finish - the detail, atmosphere, scripts, monsters, the ZDoom stuff, just great. Pretty challenging too (being a -fast junkie) although the ammo balance was bad towards the end. The slowed-down ssg was a good touch, and even the rifle wasn't unbalancing either. It's wads like this that make me want to play DooM a bit more again, as well as get my arse in gear and finish my mapping project.

Now that I've played it, I've only got 3 words to say. BEST, WAD, EVER. Seriously, the familiarity yet difference is what kept my playing really fun, and the intermission screen was awesome. I loved E1M2 though, it was a great one. Good job. 5/5 -Moti

Just played through KDiZD then played through the original E1. I had tons of fun playing the original, no fun playing KDiZD. Sorry, you guys fail it. 0/5

Very well done, though the only turnoffs for me are the excessive backtracking and scarce ammo.

this would have been easy as hell if you didnt cram nine trillion sectors in every room to distract me. even the monsters had a hell of a time navigating through this mess. What matters the most was whether or not it was fun. And I was turned off by it being too much like doom 3 and not like doom. 3/5

The visuals and atmosphere are excellent. Gameplay is switch-hunty, and backtracking gets old FAST (E1M3 comes to mind). I find it stupid that people are rating this based on the benchmark of what they "expected" it to be, or rating it low because of the "undeserved hype" it has received. It is a well done project, and THAT is what matters. As a re-imagining of E1, it does it's job and then some. In the most objective fashion I am capable of, I give this a 4/5. ~GuitarMan

i love how Z1M8 just warps into a more hellish atmosphere as you play the level while it lagged a bit in GZDoom it was still awsome. i hope they do the other episodes 5/5

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.

What the actual f*ck is this map. I love having 4 rockets, a shit ton of bullets and like 10 shotgun shells to take out a revenant, and whatever was in that cage. Doesn't look too bad, maybe this negativity is cus im no expert, also rather unskilled at the game?
