About This File

This is a long level with a long history. Mr. Chris (Chris Pisarczyk) and the late Phobosdeimos1 (Callum Oliver) started this map during the development of Doom the way id Did, probably a year or so before it was officially released. I joined in after Phobosdeimos1 left early in the map's development and I joined in afterwards. I did a lot of the western half of the map and Mr. Chris did a lot of the eastern half, but there are many points where we both worked on the same areas, so you really can't tell who did what. (Since Mr. Chris is a much more popular mapper than I am, I assume people probably can recognize his mapping style)

Of course, ol' faithful here was rejected from the project for being about twice the size of E2M7 and having over two hundred monsters, among other things. Eventually Mr. Chris released the DTWID version of this level as "the damned," which you can find here on /idgames. Meanwhile, as I gained more knowledge about mapping I dinked around a bit and made a few adjustments here and there to help with the map's flow and progression. A few bugs were also fixed, and a couple of things were added here and there to add character.

For those who haven't played this level before (most of you, I would assume), you may need to use your automap more than a few times because this map is VERY large and VERY non-linear. You may also need to wear eye protection, since it's twice as ugly as it is big. (Remember, it's DTWID so we had to channel our inner Sandy Petersen!)

Also, I would advise against deathmatch on this map due to its gargantuan size. (I'm one of those guys that has to put deathmatch starts in every map he touches!)

Hope you have fun!

-Jeff (Marnetmar)

Classic style, plays so id feel, good and bad designs too, since it was designed for the DTWID project and then rejected. Impossible to get 100% kills because a monster cannot get teleport out with 1-time only teleport line...

If you like the old-school id style, this one is for you, if you're not, well, maybe give it a try if you don't really hate id levels.

Quite large E2-clone. Almost similar ambiance, more or less similar gameplay. As such: presumably 4* for retro lovers. Sadly it adds almost nothing noteworthy to the original E2 maps, and I seriously wonder who anno 2013 is still waiting for this, so 1.5*. Overall: small 3* because a lot of effort / care has been put in this.

dpass.txt says its e2m6 - it's actually e2m7. I've played this in another map. Dunno what you did, but this one seems to play better and be more enjoyable.

How many times will we see this thing. It's in the Lost Episodes, and it's also The Dammed as a s separate release. Seems kind of excessive to upload the same level so many times.

I sure liked this one, especially towards the end. It felt like the original DooM a lot, I think.

These two map layout look similar at a glance, but this one is in vanilla section, and other one is in Ports section (and its TXT file says "Not sure, possibly Boom based?"). How can you not know if you made it? ;-) Anyway it's confusing.

Seems too slow-paced and too random. When you play this map, you don't have the feeling of getting anywhere in particular. I didn't like it.

In case you're wondering who James Collins is, he is best known by his username, an_mutt. (Or maybe he is the front and opposable thumbs for his dog who does the actual mapping.)    Recurring Nightmare has good craftsmanship -- not just "for a speedmap" either. It felt like a low-detail Mechadon map: the offbeat angular geometry is there, as is the architecture that wraps and overlaps, all dressed in synergistic combos of stock textures. Gameplay is short and sharp, 50 monsters, generally a handful at a time, in smart choreographed traps that pin you in tight spaces with weapons just about good enough. It is harsh and to the point.    One clear misstep is the cleaned-up automap. [:^) Kappa :smiley_cat: etc.]

Yukio Ide was always a kind of interesting oddball to me, he made these weird maps filled with sound clips and low res anime pics from 90s bbs(mostly evangelion and Ah! My Godness! over some other unknown anime), but it have always some sort of "happy-go-lucky" that is unusual in a game like doom. Oh, and lots of crosses in the maps. But overall, his maps are enjoyable to me, for some reason. And this "love wad" to his waifu Belldandy is no expection! Level is short, colorful and have a way too happy music in it, overall is not that bad, but neither a great, amazing wad. Things like the million secrets (included in some rooms that aren't that secret, 2 secret rooms are behind a normal door! WTF?) in the map, the pretty bland looking map, that strange audio clip for the pistol shot (yes, the pistol have this audio clip almost unheareable phrase taken from the Ah! My Godness! anime that is just... weird and plain irritating, and the sound compression made it sound like gibberish) and the "love wad" affair, like other reviewers behind my time, is a strange thing to show your love with a wad where you kill people... Is like if i do a wad called "I love you Yohane" and make a slaughtermap filled with low res pictures of mai waifu for giving me courage or whatever, is just a weird and even kind of creepy thing to do. But the status bar graphics is pretty nice imo! I could even take it and change the colors of writing from pink to a more reddish tint... Is cool to have a japanese written status bar at your side, i think.

Short map (maybe one of his first?) made by Impie, the Robocop Doom and many other combos you have played in these years, including that wad based upon Lovercraftian universe (i don't remember the name now), this a short affair sets in this rocky canyon with some hellish sections. Texturing reminds me of TNT. Layout is pretty and there's some minor, very simple "speedrunning" trickery you have to do for passing trough the map, difficulty is not hard but takes you to the edge. Not bad.

From the same author of my previously played map "Gorilla Gore", another short and fun little map, less squarish than that other map and much funnier to play, i liked it. Also really enjoyed that handrail texture.

Two nice maps with some good use of space, MAP01 is more primitive and easy to get lost than MAP02, but overall it's... ok. Level aren't that difficult and the layout is not to throw away, it is also pretty cool in some parts. Two nice maps for passing the time.
