Doom 2 the Way id Did

About This File

Doom II The Way id Did is the long awaited sequel to 2011's Doom The Way id Did. It comprises 32 levels that endeavour to both look and play as though they've come from Dallas, 1994, from the very toiling hands of Sandy, John and American.

The idea was originally kicked about by Jason Root aka Hellbent, whose passion for the game and knack for growing enthusiasm resulted in one of the most successful community collaborations in Doomworld history – not to mention an impressive collection of more than 100 total submissions. While not quite as successful as the first project in this regard, painstaking lengths have been made by those involved to ensure that D2TWiD is as true a doppelganger of id's Doom 2 as it could ever be. And we hope that you agree! Enjoy!

After playing this for real (did what someone told me earlier and downloaded from the wad's site, not the mirrors), I can safely say this is the best follow-up to DTWID. Once again, superb level design. You can tell a lot of effort went into this. 5/5

much like its predecessor, D2TWID delivers on the promise to make maps the way that Id did, and the authors did the same thing they did before, carefully study the design patterns of id's authors to a very addicting degree and make maps that are not tributes, but completely original levels. the end result actually made some surprisingly memorable maps, some of which are full of gimmicks, and I'm not just talking about MAP24 or perhaps MAP20 in which the gimmicks are in the titles.

just look at Tarsman's maps, which actually comprise like 1/3 of the set. dude's got gimmicks laid down but keeps very close to the id style of things, this of course doesn't exclude everyone else. D2TWID's combat is fairly standard barring the mapper I said above (who is quite fond of the chaingunner I should say), none of the maps really go overboard with monster counts (which is great). the secret maps are really cool and are some of the best as well. if only MAP33 wasn't a fuckbag of wtf I would say it's a perfect wad.

BEST secret levels of any PWAD I have ever played, and I mean it! But it's not only that. This copies the style of the original as closely as it can get - maybe including some design flaws Doom II had in the first place, but that's probably intended. Hoping for a best-of release of the cut levels like they did (or are still in the process of doing) for the predecessor. This is more or less "play or die" stuff.

I personally really enjoyed this megawad. There were a lot of great levels, and it was pretty fun to play through. It's not perfect, but I still think this is one of the best DOOM 2 megawads I've played.

Very solid level design. I finished the entire wad within two days and I enjoyed it quite a lot. It is very reminiscent of the original Doom 2. 5/5

Simply brilliant follow up. It's just so much fun, and the maps are consistent in their familiarity to Doom 2. A must play. 5 stars. -TRRobin.

Good maps, most of them ended up in Skulltag later on (as in, 2004-2005 lol). A solid wad that frankly deserves more play time, even in the year 2021.

this really deserves much more attention than it gets! it definitely has its fair share of negatives like cryptic progression, symmetry, etc, but for the time it's actually very good. the visuals are very nice with interesting architecture and good lighting, and despite not being balanced for pistol start very well the combat is great fun nonetheless.

it's like if the casali brothers got their hands on skillsaw's kamikaze soldiers   srsly tho, for 1995 this wad is pretty vicious. the moeller brothers love to throw some real nasty shit at you on the regular, but despite that it still remains very fun (albeit somewhat frustrating at times). the levels all look decent for 1995, and the spritework for the new enemies and textures is quite good as well. aside from a few specific things (the beginning of map06 for example) there's not really any genuinely bad things about the megawad. if you're a fan of older stuff then i highly recommend this mapset - it's not as refined as later stuff the moellers worked on like memento mori, but it's still great fun.

a very fun mapset that, unfortunately, is plagued by a few bugs. it's mostly fine if you get the fix, but if you're unaware of it then it's gonna prevent you from progressing   it's a shame, because this really is a great mapset. it starts off somewhat standard but quickly becomes quite reminiscent of av's later levels. i highly recommend it if you're into that
