Big Woodchip

About This File

You woke up in a small wooden Hell (Woodchip, from abysped2), managed to fight your way to a teleporter that took you to the surface, but pitted you against a wormhole in a wooden fortification (Woodchip Woodchip, from abysped3). After defeating everything that through at you, the only way forwards was a small dark cave. You wander for what feels like an eternity, following the wall with your hand, and eventually see a light at the end of the tunnel. But it's flickering and, sure enough, it's a torch next to another banded wooden door with a lion motif. You've recovered from your previous battles, but you've lost your plasma rifle somewhere on the way and you can't go back, so you grip your pistol. The only way is through...

My high expectations after E2MWalter were not disappointed. This map looks and plays great. Ultra-violence was extremely challenging and there was barely enough ammo for me to finish the job. I had to reload a bit but the monsters are well-chosen and none of the fights are grossly unfair. I have never seen an author use the original Doom textures as artfully as James does. Seriously, this map is better than most of Doom 2.

Played @ UV. Simple but nice architecture. Map layout is often a bit cramped. Gameplay is not very special but ok, although spider + 2 AVs is, well, er, not quite inspiring. Cybie section is not too difficult when speedrunning. Overall: a small 4/5, imho absolutely not legendary as posters above state (compared f.e. with ED4_RFO, roch & unloved), but worth a play.

Classic gameplay in a very original and fresh presentation. An excellent job.

I misread the title as "big Woodchipper", which would be appropriate for the difficulty. Good job.

Okay, this one is quite hard. I had to do a bit of a run-away w/ the cyber. Most of the time, you have to go metal gear solid on the map. Make use of the map. ~4/5

It was pretty good; I liked the architecture, and the gameplay was pretty good, especially fighting 3 AV's with a SM. Cyber fight seemed to be a little dull for my tastes. 4/5

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
