About This File

Something sinister is lurking in UAC headquarters. Grab your gun, head to the roof and shoot your way down through the building to get to the bottom of the mystery.

This is a 32 map Doom 2 megawad - boom format, complevel 9. Each map is a floor, each floor has a lift, each lift needs a key. You'll work it out I'm sure, just keep going down.

These are small, fairly hard maps with high body-counts, and gameplay I would describe as 'chaotic-evil'. The music tracks are my own compositions which you may use with appropriate credits, here is a track list:

map 01, 29 - 'Somebody set up us the bomb'
map 02, 30, 31 - 'Zombie goes shopping'
map 03 - 'The haunted supermarket'
map 04, 15 - 'Running from the jazz robots'
map 05, 13, 23 - 'The haunted aquarium'
map 06, 22 - 'Lost in zombie cyberspace'
map 07, 20 - 'Mega robo-clown boss battle'
map 08, 14 - 'The haunted waiting room'
map 09, 17 - 'The haunted skeleton factory'
map 10, 27, 32 - 'Robo-zombie mecha-brain boss battle'
map 11, 21 - 'Zombie maggots in the flesh cathedral'
map 12, 24 - 'Chased by dancing skeletons'
map 16, 28 - 'Wedding march for the princess of death'
map 18, 25 - 'Hiding from the robo-zombies'
map 19, 26 - 'Attack of the spider-clowns'
title screen - 'Going Down'
lift muzak - 'Descent of Death'

Fuckin' awesome! This wad is extremely challenging on Ultra Violence, making it perfect for Survival servers. The maps themselves are very creative, the architecture is (mostly) good, and lengthy mazes are kept to a minimum. It's all about the killing with this epic megawad. Some people might find the music offputting, but I love it. It's zany and wacky while sinister and disturbing, exactly like what going to hell in an elevator should be like. 5/5, highly recommended.

Really top-notch quality and production vlaue. It oozes of awesome. I find the beginning, however, to be a little boring. It's not until further ahead that things get really good.

Amazing wad with some amazing maps and detail. +1 (if it was possible) for a PCGamer Magazine mention.

Excellent mapset. Playing it for the first time and constantly getting surprised with the author's cool ideas is fun. Most maps are very well designed graphically (if you think default Doom textures are stale, wait till you see what mouldy does with them!) and have great gameplay. I also enjoyed the short length of these levels; they pretty much never outstay their welcome. Each map is a memorable one with a lot of "personality" and replayability.

A megawad that has depth to it both literally and figuratively speaking. Lots of creativity and character in these levels. A must-have for anyone still playing doom.

Going Down tells us a story, one that involves Doomguy (called Doomguy for once) simply doing his job. this is compounded in the idea that 32 levels all take place in one building, and as the title states, going down each floor once you clear out the one you're on. Elevator Action on Doomroids, in other words, but again, this is compounded by each and every map being outright memorable. yes, mouldy does craft out some amazing level concepts involving warping through time, hide and seek with arch-viles, going off of the deep end, a puzzle level, an arena, a stair climb just to get cellular reception and the roof rage that follows, entering a spaceship and fighting off loads of archies (or revenants) and pain elementals before returning, the infamous Mouth of Madness, the collecting of yellow skulls, the forbidden fruit, and necropolis, then you go back up and destroy the building and find yourself actually playing a video game.

and yet again, mouldy compounds this with "chaotic evil" gameplay. it's basically compact slaughter, but what mouldy does differently that sets it apart from your average slaughtermap is to make it fun by balancing it out so the weaker players can have the gaul to stick through it. if you're not a fan of getting your ass kick consistently, you're in good hands. play on the lowest setting and take note of the invulnerabilities you can find. this can make many maps a breeze. even MAP28, the largest slaughtermap, becomes amazingly easy once you find the invulnerabilities. and then you got the crazy music that plays in the maps, all compounding the chaos of this compound.

there's just no way you can pass up Going Down, if you can't get it good on one setting, play on another and remember, these gimmicks are actually good.

There is so much detail and small things in every room and even the smallest passage. Gives the feel that evey piece is really handmade and well thought through. Awesome Leveldesign and re-use of architecture even overlapping into other mas. Great Gameplay and Storyline! Favorite Level: This crazy Archvile-Map(Map19). The moment you get teleported into the "dark" world with the painelementals. Just great!! If this is not 5 stars, then what else? One of the best Wads I've played!

I usually don't have the patience to sit through Megawads anymore, but I've just about got this one licked. Excellent and consistent quality, some really nice mapping tricks later on, and a difficulty that just keeps ramping up without frustrating me. Not a single map so far has overstayed it's welcome. Music is going to be a hit and miss with some people, I love it, but it does get a bit repetitive come twenty maps in. I'm definitely holding onto this one for forever. Great work.

Later maps are excellent, good gameplay and challenging difficulty. Superb visuals on all maps, and some maps are technically incredible. On the other hand, gameplay on half of the maps sucks horribly: difficulty is annoying and fights consist of infinite waves of enemies teleporting in. WAD would be better if such "invasion" elements wouldn't be here.

Awesome little map set! If you enjoyed Scythe, this will probably be your cup of tea. Loved the "ride an elevator from the rooftop all the way down to hell" theme... finally an original DooM story for a change! Gameplay is cramped and agonizingly hard at a few spots, although surprisingly playable throughout, as long as you come up with a good plan (you soon learn to dread every single action you take... the traps are NASTY!). Will definitely replay!

One of the most intelligently made map sets out there. Excellent challenge for the somewhat experienced player. Sometimes I feel though that there are just a tad too many traps, but it keeps you on your toes. The music works for me although I can understand the criticism. Art usage is very consistent across all maps. I felt a little cramped in some of them but it's personal preference. Clever humour is the cherry on top. 9/10 converts to 4.5/5 rounded up to 5 stars.

Really good puzzle map in a big dark metal/stone building. It catches the atmosphere of Bob Evans' Eternal Doom stuff, and I think there are even some homages to some other Eternal Doom maps as well (for example, the big two-layered outdoor area looks a bit like the "amusement park" in MAP26).   In my experience the puzzles were a bit easier than in "Silures" or "Excalibur", but it's possible that having played a lot of puzzle map stuff since I played Eternal Doom, having played through the whole canon of Bob Evans and Jim Flynn, and liking to search for Doom secrets in every map has made me recognize certain tropes better. The puzzles I liked most were (the spoilers only give minor hints):
Gameplay is good too, at the start ammo is scarce so the chainsaw and berserk are your friend, and midtiers say hello from the start on, but hitscanners are the biggest threat. Rockets should be saved for archviles until you find the first larger cache.   9,5/10

Fun, challenging set of maps that looks much better than you might expect for the time it was made. These maps will still slap you around a bit on HMP if you're not staying sharp. The author is fond of Chaingunner ambushes which keep you on your toes. I didn't find the SSG until around MAP05, which was cool, I like when its not given out too early. Pistol-starting the last two maps is pretty tough, but doable.   The map designs do a really good job of letting the player see crucial areas from different angles through progression and the layouts are really tidy overall, and feel a bit more modern than a lot of other 94/95 maps I've played. There are some really nice large-scale vistas (like the start of MAP06), nice uses of verticality and a good mixture of tight and more open combat.   Recommended!

Spectacular visuals and engaging combat make this an absolute must play. There's a puzzle with a "Shoot the thing" answer that kind of comes out of left field and can be an easy place to get stuck if you're not on your toes, but that hardly stops the map from being a thrilling masterpiece.

E3M9's refrain of back-tracking to a church for keys is a little tedious, and there are a few moments where things can become a frustrating key/switch hunt as you figure out what to do next, but aside from that, this an intense and rewarding adventure with beautiful lighting and architecture.
