About This File

12 maps made during the thirteenth Abyssal Speedmapping Session in the space of two hours, with 15 minutes for music and texture selection and 15 minutes for bugfixing.

Considering this session marked one year since I started these sessions, I let them other mappers choose the themes. They chose

- E4 - Abbatoir - John Romero style

Scifista42 used the Alfonzo treatment.

Woah! Look at that, an ASS that's quite good! 12 maps made quickly and with a free design, but that apparently fell into a general design inspired by my favorite episode: Thy Flesh Consumed. With a demonically gothic aesthetic, full of green marble and lots of lava, these maps prove that speed is not detrimental to good visual design. Fast and tight, the combat is intense and requires good attention, with a few bullshit maps that make us suffer a few ''jokes.'' On the upside, this is probably the most solid ASS there is in terms of consistency and quality among the first 13. Jimmy, Matt Tropiano and AD_79 are mapping wizards; their maps are fantastic, fun, flow brillantly and are just goddamn fun to play. I'd give this set a 4 if it weren't for the crappy ending, but the rest: chefs kiss. Especially recommended if you're a fan of the style and aesthetic of Thy Flesh Consumed. The Romero and McGee ink is felt quite greatly in some of these maps.

A nice ASS. Would play it again.

This is better than the average speed map set. Maps are short, as expected, but gameplay and visuals are good.

Blue broken rooms and ugly texturing, lots of HOMs, lots of monsters and no way to resemble any house of sort. Or to tribute The big Lebowsky movie at all. A very bad old style jokewad map, unfunny at all.

A medium sized map sets in a sort of church surrounded by burning men, graveyards and other type of stuff around. The level is simple but fun to play, both in SP and DM. Same simplicity reflects in the detailing work and fell.

A wooden and metal structure that also have some prisons, hidden locked doors as normal textures and everything here is brown, very brown. Overall a fun map with a fun gameplay and a spooky atmosphere, especially thanks to the music. Cool stuff.

A pretty intricate and fun to explore map sets in a semi-realistic castle with lots of secret passages, doomcute "realistic" furniture that even include a library made out of sector art stuff. The fact that this is a Retextured Doom map is shown greatly here. Pretty neat map, the only real breaker is that this map have a unused red skull key and other keys for the locked doors (blue and yellow keys)? At least i didn't find them. I had to noclip trough them for complete the map. If it could not be for this bug, it will be a great map. But overall, is pretty good. The baroque music is fabulous. Make me think of women in dress and huge wigs dancing in the marble throne room! Or demons in this case.

An old mid-1990s map, based around a large main arena which contains some interesting structures. For a while it's tough going, and you may die a handful of times (as I did), before getting the hang of the layout and formulating a strategy. Once you get the yellow key though, and access to the BFG, it should be game over for the baddies.   Your calculations can be thrown off track however if the Archvile decides to emerge from the movie theatre at an early stage, and take a stroll out in the open. Another thing to watch for is the Cyberdemon entering the said building while you're in one of the auditoriums, and blocking your escape. I experienced both of these events, with fatal consequences...
