About This File

Four maps created to celebrate the 20th birthday of the one and only STRAIN. If you don't know what that is... man, screw *this* WAD; GO PLAY STRAIN!

STRAIN has long been my favorite Doom WAD, and I've always wanted to pay tribute to it in some way. Suddenly, its 20th anniversary was barrelling toward me and I figured -- it's now or never!

Let's take a trip back to Moonbase Daro together!

NOTE: STRAIN.WAD and STRAIN.DEH are REQUIRED to play Return to Daro, and must be loaded in the correct order: STRAIN.WAD/.DEH and then RTD.WAD. If you don't see the "Return to Daro" title screen, something went wrong. And if you get stuck arachnotrons, the DeHackEd patch wasn't loaded correctly. When playing in ZDoom, make sure you unzip the contents of strain.zip before loading them.

Super cool. The STRAIN aesthetic is always great, and these four well-crafted maps are a great tribute to the classic WAD. Ryath really brings out the potential of the new bestiary, moreso than the original authors ever did. The final level is a bit of a letdown, being a simple arena with a rather low-key battle to end on. But the first three maps more than make up for it. MAP03 in particular had a few spots that made my jaw drop. More of these, please!

I rarely see additional maps done for existing PWADs; and these ones here are good. The WAD is quick to beat with rather easy difficulty but the levels have good balance between exploration and action. Some triggers will not be obvious, especially on MAP03, but it's nothing too iritating given the overall small size of the levels. I also liked the puzzle with closing doors on MAP02.

Lovely puzzle-centric map that was a little more action-packed than I remember. Progression made sense and I didn't find myself wandering for too long without finding some way through the level. If you get lost in this level the automap helps a lot and gives some hints as to where the next area to explore might be hidden.

great visuals and atmosphere, levels can actually be done quickly. custom monsters and ambushes are fine. I wish the boss map was a bit better to understand though, since I took like 15 minutes to figure out how to lower the barrier before figuring it out.

map by map reviews are fun...   MAP01: yes easy map, but also rather tedious to max due to the infighting that you pretty much have to rely on once the arch-viles are gone. also a BFG-only map, which despite there not being basically any other weapons you really can't kill everything with anything else.   MAP02: I fucking hate platforming of this kind, especially with the ceiling bits making it even more so. when the combat is there it's pretty good. the trap room was very devious and nasty too. otherwise a forboding map.   MAP03: no real tedium thankfully and nice Ribbiks-like setpieces. only problem is the reliance of voodoo triggers when I pretty much clear out most battles quickly. best level of the set.   MAP31: the revenant wall is fun.   MAP32: this and the previous maps were treated as bonus maps. I had to god-mode this one entirely and even then it's tedious. why didn't half of those revenants teleport #OCDtrigger   one of the reasons I really don't like the slaughtermaps of this kind is just since I always aim to kill everything and get everything as quickly as humanely humanely humanely possible, I'm spending minutes killing cyberdemons on the floors of the maps and it takes up way too much time. and if that isn't much of a problem, in that I can take out the setpiece quickly enough, having to wait for the lock-in to finish lowering or something like that bores me to death. again, spending minutes waiting is a problem. maybe my mindset shouldn't be to rush through everything, but I like that kind of playstyle. it's just all that waiting, man. and the potential tedium of having to face big monsters in a scenario that takes much longer than it already is. now feel free to ignore this, or me.

An enjoyable single level wad, with a few tricks, and traps, to make it interesting. The level does however have a few texture problems here and there, and the geometry isn't amazing, but is totally serviceable for the killing of the demons. Give it a try!

I've always enjoyed this one. For some reason it's just fun to blast monsters in these simple but tastefully decorated rooms, and I like how the central area keeps changing.
