About This File

Four maps created to celebrate the 20th birthday of the one and only STRAIN. If you don't know what that is... man, screw *this* WAD; GO PLAY STRAIN!

STRAIN has long been my favorite Doom WAD, and I've always wanted to pay tribute to it in some way. Suddenly, its 20th anniversary was barrelling toward me and I figured -- it's now or never!

Let's take a trip back to Moonbase Daro together!

NOTE: STRAIN.WAD and STRAIN.DEH are REQUIRED to play Return to Daro, and must be loaded in the correct order: STRAIN.WAD/.DEH and then RTD.WAD. If you don't see the "Return to Daro" title screen, something went wrong. And if you get stuck arachnotrons, the DeHackEd patch wasn't loaded correctly. When playing in ZDoom, make sure you unzip the contents of before loading them.

Super cool. The STRAIN aesthetic is always great, and these four well-crafted maps are a great tribute to the classic WAD. Ryath really brings out the potential of the new bestiary, moreso than the original authors ever did. The final level is a bit of a letdown, being a simple arena with a rather low-key battle to end on. But the first three maps more than make up for it. MAP03 in particular had a few spots that made my jaw drop. More of these, please!

I rarely see additional maps done for existing PWADs; and these ones here are good. The WAD is quick to beat with rather easy difficulty but the levels have good balance between exploration and action. Some triggers will not be obvious, especially on MAP03, but it's nothing too iritating given the overall small size of the levels. I also liked the puzzle with closing doors on MAP02.

I remember playing this months back and it's still a fantastic level to me, an easy Cacoward contender if you ask me! It's nice to see a creative level with a small but nice joke that works out in the end. There's also a surprise at the end that wraps up the level very nicely. The level is open and challenging enough to keep things interesting, especially some of the secrets if you can find them. Great level and worth playing!

Great design overall but for the end, I don't get why (which is a nitpick) it doesn't immediately go to the end episode 2 text but goes to the intermissions screen followed by the graphic seen after you pass the end text. Played with GZDoom 3.2.1.

An incredible classic, fun in every way with a simple idea that manages to complete successfully and exciting, truly, I feel that ID did it.

Maps are annoyingly difficult and even playing in "Hey Not Too Rough", one map starts with like 8 chainguners in front of you?  Others start similar with shotgun zombies close to you.  Not even to mention like map15 I guess, where you have to cross a very long corridor where the floor is lava (literally!) only 1 radiation suit in the middle, a couple of stimpacks and the corridor blocked by monsters going from Imps to revenants, pain elemental and arachnotron, and to complete, after you activate the switch at the end of the corridor you have to take all the way back, without another radiation suit or any other power-up (idbehold - r did it's debut there).  Definitely not enjoyable, being unnecesary difficult, almost impossible.
