About This File

SPIRIT2.WAD for DOOM2 is an update of SPIRIT.WAD with some modifications and without additional graphic patches. I only used the original DOOM2 graphics to make WAD-editing easier and to keep the file as small as possible.

Prequel to Twilight Lab, green & gray base with cute design, try to catch that blue ball and the bonus Chessboard map is really funny.

Not very interesting because it's just linear progression from one small room to another with easy targets to kill. There are some kinda clever rooms and nice uses of triggers, plus the white+marble texturing has a certain surreal quality to it, but overall it made me a bit bored. Map02 is just a cute/silly bonus.

Visually pleasing, solid OS style map. Not boringly easy like most stuff from this era!

I was intrigued by the mention of a "Blue Ball room", but of course it's just an awkwardly referred to Soul Sphere. This is a decent if rather average map that mostly combines green marble with grey and ick cement, a slightly odd combination but the texturing is competent. Play is decent, though the slightly non-linear design means slightly confusing as well. The second map is a chessboard with a bunch of nasties on it, it's easy to get them to infight, and it feels like kind of an afterthought.

Yet another newbie stuff from Jeremy Wagner. This is however superior to its predecessor, but still not great. We now know that the getting-stuck situations are deliberate. Here's a hint: whenever you see a room with two switches, save. One of them is bad and will shut your progress.   I must commend the author for adding HHE and custom sprites though. The HHE is interesting because it replaces the Ethereal Crossbow with an Ice Crossbow, which in good Raven tradition fires fragmentation shard projectiles (the ones fired by the Iron Lich), and they work perfectly with the player. It also makes the Crossbow really powerful on its own. The only port I know which can load HHE is Chocolate-Heretic. Use  -file incubus.wad -merge sprites.wad -deh hack.hhe -hhever 1.2 to run it.   Unfortunately the mod is really not stable and is prone to crashing Chocolate-Heretic, so it only gets 1 star. Sorry. Without the crashes it would have got 2 stars for the modding effort, because the level design is still bad.

This is an amazing level, ignore the naysayers. It's better than its predecessor in time, SUBRIVER. It's also one of the few which use switches like in the IWAD.

Yay, the first Keith Phipps wad. This is a high quality level, though not hard enough to get 5 points.

A fairly solid level, with some odd design decisions. It seems to be the first wad with a sizeable slaughter scene. It's also the first wad which uses the E2M6 music. One warning though. After the blue key, there's a deadly crushing floor. Either save before it or make sure to run fast. The level also seems to have a quick exit, though it's not obvious.

A couple of highly different maps.   First map is pretty trash. It tries to challenge you but is full of bugs and accidental dead ends, so you need to save at key moments.   Second map is better, though less structured, but good enough to redeem from the ugliness of the first map.
