About This File

Hello, and welcome to the third installment in the UCA storyline! Of the 3 thus far, this one is probably the hardest. It is designed for single player, though coop mode is supported but not tested. Deathmatch, however, is NOT supported, as DIOPATRA is a bit too large and too dark to make an enjoyable deathmatch wad. Difficulty levels are supported but limited to basically "hurt me plenty" or "ultra-violent."

DIOPATRA is an almost completely cavernous wad. As such, it is DARK and a bit mazy. It is rather non-linear; you have to determine for yourself the best way to go about completing and exploring the different sections. This is a fairly dangerous wad - as noted, it happens to be rather dark, though I have included several lite-goggles to help...if you find them. DIOPATRA looks and works best if you don't jack up the gamma correction, so play this one at night or in a dark room. Don't blame me if you play in broad daylight and can't see much - you've been warned! :)

A large, dark, hellish maze, with some sewer parts. This one's pretty good. The fights aren't too easy (you may have to search a bit for ammo sometimes), there are some nice traps, and the layout is quite non-linear, so you can run around the map almost any way you like. The texturing is a bit monotonous, but it's all convincingly designed. However, some things about the gameplay are a little confusing, and I felt like I more or less stumbled upon the keys and the exit. --3/5

This is dated May 1994. It's E2M3, although the underground lava theme feels like something from E3. It's less detailed than a real E3 level but the design isn't bad; 120 baddies, good balance of health and ammo. Very angular and sprawling, the constant presence of demons makes me long for the double shotgun, several of the rooms feel superfluous, and it doesn't "build" to anything - the exit is just another door. But for mid-1994 it's very good.

This is the first non-Euclidean doom wad I've ever seen! And it's done right! That must've been some project. Well done.

*** PLUTONIA 3 - GOING TO THE SURFACE Review ***   I usually start off my reviews with "The Bad," followed by "The Good." This one is going to have "The Ugly." Ready?   The Good:   - Not a thing.   The Bad:   - Everything. For a more detailed reason, see TurrboAnklet's and/or GuyNamedErick's review (both below). I agree with 110% of every word written in both.   The Ugly:   - Duke Nukem music? Really?!?!?! - BFG9000 in second level. And enough plasma cells to virtually destroy the universe including any parallel ones.   **************************************************************************   In Short: I saw the PLUTONIA name, and I got fairly excited to play it. But, that's the gimmick here, isn't it? Reel you in with the name and then you open Pandora's Box. Freeware or not.   I played a few levels from start, then I IDCLEV'ed to a couple teen-numbered levels, then to mid- to later-twenty numbered levels to see if there was hope in the future for any chance of fun. Nope. It's as much fun as eating a generic-branded box of Mac & Cheese - with the box missing the cheese.   I am required to give this WAD at least 1 star else I can't post a review. So, for that reason ONLY, this "WAD" gets a star. There is no freaking way this took 3 years to build. I would believe it more, if it were 3 minutes. This clusterf*ck not only tarnishes the great PLUTONIA name, it insults the entire DooM universe.   Soooo not recommended. 0 out 5 stars.

Gameplay is just okay, nothing especially interesting. But the level's theme and textures are pretty damn funny. Everywhere you look there's another little joke. It's worth playing just for amusement. I don't know what the hell these commenters are talking about regarding a "creepy atmosphere", IMO you'd have to be a pretty big weenie to get scared by a Doom level full of joke textures just because its a little dark...

Very cool level. The way you have to use your fist & pistol in the beginning enhances the feeling of being trapped & powerless and having to escape. The visuals are very nicely-done, with lots of little details & cool ideas. The atmosphere is quite spooky, reminding me of the dungeon segments of the later Unloved. It is indeed linear, but it's still an interesting journey and the gameplay is fair & fun.

Nice layout. There are actually some challenging moments with monsters attacking from every direction, especially if you try to rush it. The visuals are basic but stylish and might remind you of early Grain of Salt levels (see Green Goddess).
