About This File

Well, this is a very impressive episode including 9 _excellent_ levels. All the levels in this episode were created by myself, excluding e1m5, which was designed by a friend. We feel that any DOOM fanatic will enjoy this episode and will be completely impressed by the work put into it.

This replaces E1M1 and is great fun, although the author comes across as a self-aggrandising twit in his readme ("I insisted that the levels I designed were no less greater than those in the actual game..." he says). He didn't do anything after this. Fava Beans is easy to review; it's a parallel universe version of E1, with some of the same design ideas, but mixed up. It's just slightly cruder than Id's E1, and played today it's not too hard, but it's entertaining and very nostalgic.

Old school, could easily have replaced E1.

One of the greatest E1 replacements ever made. Even with all the new, more detailed and challenging KDitD replacements, I still find Fava Beans to be the closest in style to ID's original episode. 5/5

IMO, the all-time classic Knee Deep replacement. I still play this one for relaxation and appreciation of clever, good-looking design. Everything about this WAD is first-rate except for the low gameplay difficulty. I especially enjoyed secret-searching, and the number of times I saw arenas that I wouldn't actually fight in for awhile. Just ... FUN! 5/5 -- Steve Duff

I am flattered that a number of old school Doomers now see the Fava Beans Episode as classic! If only I could go back and rewrite the text file - I would tone down the self-appraising rhetoric a bit... The levels were fun to make, fun to deathmatch, and way more fun than doing homework! Cheers - SB.

perfect. fun means having fun, not having to beat 10 cyberdemons with a pistol.

well, i guess its OK. compared with some other wads i've seen, it is not so impressive. yet i live in a world where DooM is virtually gone, i was only in elementary school in the '90s so i never had the chance to see the changing world of doom. Anyone else feel like this?

just started playing thid thing today 9/30/03. I think this is a very good wad pak. I am only on the fourth map but the game play is good. It really does look as though ID released this one.

Looks nice enough but WAY too easy. Mainly a set for nostalgia seekers.

I'm sure that this wad was a huge success among Doomers when it came out but I don't think it warrants such high ratings. The architecture is rather complex, with lots of little hallways for you to explore. This leads to situations where you run circles around the maps looking for switches or doors you might have not noticed. Another mistake the author made was placing more ammo around then you'll ever need playing this. It's an okay doom experience aside from those things. 2/5

I remember this being better back when I first downloaded it in 2003 but then it was one of first PWADs I played and a lot has changed since. This still scores above average for me because the layout and visuals still hold up and while there is not a lot of a challenge the gameplay is not boring or annoying. 4/5 - purist

I never played this one before and I have to say that this was pretty damn fun. Despite its age, it still plays really nice and the level design is simple yet appealing. 5/5

This won a "retro-Caco" for standing out amidst most of the utter shit released at the time, but it is like E1 in the sense that taxidermy is like an animal. Architectural excerpts have been removed from context and slathered in boring textures. Placement of humanoids and minor powerups could have been done with a random generator; maps increase in size but not difficulty; pulling all switches solves every puzzle. Few technical errors and all those snipers keep you awake, but not actually interested.

Why does this not have 5/5? The architexture may not be up to todays standards, but for 1995 it is unparalleled. It certainly looks nice enough even now (and a lot better than what some people have to offer today). It may not be hard by today's standards either (largely because it doesn't have the annoying uber-tight ammo placement of contemporary wads), but it is definately fun. It also has that timeless quality called gameplay. Definately legendary and definately worthy of 5 stars

A brilliant "Knee-Deep In The Dead" replacement. The maps could all have been taken right out of Doom's E1. The gameplay is almost identical, as are the secrets and, sadly, (lack of) difficulty. Still, everything about it is perfected. Author Sean Birkel later contributed to "Memento Mori 2" with a slight modification of one of the maps herein. This is the second best "Knee-Deep"-stylish mapset ever, surpassed only by "Ch Retro". --5/5

While the architecture is extremely good, especially for 1995 unfortunatley this level set couldn't hold my intrest because it was simply too easy

Great for those who play doom on the Ipod. It's not too hard, but that's what's good.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
