About This File

I set out to make the ultimate deathmatch level in this one. Once the players are fimiliar with the level it kicks b u t t, ala big time. Works well as a 1player as well.

"You have come upon one of the Cabal's blood-depoes. An important element in any powerful black magic is huge amounts of blood. Emptying the depoe's tanks into the nearby river you will have struck your first blow against the Cabal."

If you enjoy "frugality" maps where you have to calculate every bullet you expend, abuse tysoning + chainsaw range just to save a few bullets, and feeling vulnerable all of the time, this is the map for you. All of the hallmarks of its creator "Master" Sverre Kvernmo are here: liberal use of barrels, hidden weapons (the RL pickup could almost qualify as a secret!), nasty traps, and ammo & health "balancing" that would put even the Finnish Frugality Formula to shame. As usual, you will find yourself trading health of ammo, a cruel proposition indeed when you really don't have much of either.

The blue key trap is indeed very cruel, but, luckily, easily sequence-breakable, even in Vanilla (in fact I wonder if breaking it was the intended way of completing it...hmm). Othen than that the map really is well designed and ahead of its time, but it also nastily stings the player every which way. The fact that it's a "dual purpose" DM/solo map, means that there are inaccessible areas containing ammo/weapons/goodies that you desperately need most of the time but you can't have 'em, plus that (seemingly) inaccessible Yellow Key door fuckery at the end...

First in the Cabal Series from Master Sverre Kvernmo. Small but tough gameplay. An important element in any powerful black magic is huge amounts of blood. Watch the bloody sea rise.

I've played all of Cabal series (including Master levels according to the Doom Wiki) and found out these levels pretty decent and interesting. Probably, I'll summarize my feelings while reviewing the last one (The Image of Evil). Comparing the other maps of the series, this one is somewhat simplish, but a bit tricky to complete.

Ancient, but tough and good fun; a bit too much of a puzzle-style map (it's one of those ones that you almost have to do in a certain order) and it's not as polished as reputation suggests. I admire Mark Prindle and I wish I could channel his gift for non-sequiturs.

This is one of those maps where every single pickup has a purpose, and if you screw up you have to restart the map. The detail is low, but the texturing works well. Check out this old series if you haven't already. 4/5

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
