About This File

This was to be the final showdown in Cabal. Wanted to see how far I could take the design of the map view with it. Cowards go IDBEHOLDA as soon as they enter. Good players will see it evolve.

"The Image of Evil is a humongous temple created to the honour of the first Demon to slay an angel; Lithlaar. In it you will find the Cybo that now is known as the lord of Hell and his two Soulguards."

Well, finally, the conclusion to the "Cabal series". Perhaps as a result of experience from the previous entries in the series, the gameplay in this one is much more balanced, and the map plays much more "conventionally", so to speak. No more extreme ammo starvation or running around underpowered, cryptically placed essential weapons etc. though there are elements like e.g. a lot of barrels lying around, and opportunities for pinky/demon chainsaw/fist massacres (which wouldn't hurt ammo economy at all to undertake).

The layout at first looks weird, even ugly, but as soon as you turn on the automap you may get a hint as to why ;-)

Otherwise, this is quite a large map with a lot of area and height variation, full of secrets and cool spots, and enjoyable gameplay. Ammo will -generally- not be an issue although you could benefit from a bit of backtracking, here and there. Armor & health need more careful management, although if you've played other entries in the Cabal series you already know that, but there is plenty enough to keep you going.

It is possible to get stuck in a spot that you'll need to idclip out of, if you enter and exit the pre-final room in a specific manner... otherwise the map offers some pretty challenging layouts (especially the "brain" maze exploits every possible nook and cranny for ambushes and shortcuts), and a very cool ending sequence.

Highly recommended, and well-worth five stars.

As you unveil the "Image" fight through the face and brain of the lord of hell. Impressive.

Map layout is really impressive! It looks like highly-detailed daemon face. Because of that, there's a lot of sharp needle-arc-shaped corners — so some rooms look really weird, but map`s specifics are smartly used in the gameplay.

This is the last part of the Cabal series and it makes a good finish. The map is quite hard, in one situation even unfair, where I had to give me a radiation suit. It's from 1995 and quite oldschoolish but very well done. It's looking good and has some nice tricks and traps and an intense, challenging gameplay with a high monster count. Maybe, this is the best of all 7 maps, which all together are more than you would expect from such an old project. 4/5 -Milian

The author also made 4 master doom levels and 3 levels of eternal doom(4,5,12). In looks this levels doesn't reach the height of the eternal ones, but it compensate this with more challenging gameplay. Don't consider this the best of the cabal series, but that's my taste. 5/5 coldfusio

I liked it - COOL - look at the automap - the author mentions a wad he made of his university campus that he handed in for a project. It would be cool to see that.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.

What the actual f*ck is this map. I love having 4 rockets, a shit ton of bullets and like 10 shotgun shells to take out a revenant, and whatever was in that cage. Doesn't look too bad, maybe this negativity is cus im no expert, also rather unskilled at the game?

thank god Underhalls was the map that followed this mod as that level was able to remind me what actually competent level design looks like.

A basic and nice looking showroom type of map where monsters are trapped inside glass prisons, no exit and no way to play this with any modern source Port like DSDA-Doom and GZDoom, but works really well in Crispy Doom. It was a pleasant experience.
