About This File

This is a one level WAD for DOOM II that is designed to work great as either a Deathmatch, Co- Op, or single player game. This level is packed with new graphics, and is designed to REALLY look like a city. It features a fast food place, a bar, a church (of course), a supermarket, a seven - eleven corner store, and a library. There are also phone booths, streets, sidewalks and other miscellaneous stuff. Great fun map, impressive for 1995! Really enjoyed the original MIDI track on this one.

And the fact that it still holds up pretty well despite its age and the many advancements in Doomcute over the last decade or so is a nice bonus too. I wouldn't say it's particularly hard or anything, but it's still a fun time.

What's this? A city level that's better than any of Doom 2's city levels? This wad is great. Not only does it have an impressive amount of detail for 1995 (mostly thanks to the custom textures), but it's also really fun. The layout is a bit confusing at first and the secret soulsphere can be hard to find, but once you figure out where everything is, it becomes a blast to play.

This map has insane attention to detail, and fun gameplay too.Each difficulty setting is balanced and the combat never feels overwhelming in almost any way, perhaps you can struggle with the start, just a bit, because after that the map becomes easy enough for even noobies to play (And have a great time while doing so). Not to mention this is a 90's wad, Too bad it's only one map, but I can imagine the brutal work that Shamus Young put into this so creating more may have been too much

 

R.I.P Shamus Young, you truly created a fantastic map.

It's December 1995, you just got done enjoying another fantastic runthrough of Doom II. You then learn that you are able to play custom maps. You get excited and tell yourself "Woah, i'll play this game forever!". You come across Doom City, download it and give it a try. Before long you're let loose in the middle of a small town with Zombiemen coming at you from every sides, to the beat of a classic MIDI you never heard before. It doesn't take long before you come across product placements and assets you do not recognize. You explore and eventually finish the map, feeling satisfied and entertained and you tell yourself "Wow, imagine all the possibilities custom levels will bring to this game!" That...didn't happen to me because I only got to play custom maps for the first time in the late 2000's but i'm sure some kid out there who got to experience this wad in 1995 had a similar reaction.

 

Like the filename suggest, Doom City drops you in a small town with various buildings ranging from a gas station, a church, a convenience store with a storeroom, etc. By default the map has less than 100 enemies but they come at you from all sides, it won't take long before enemies give chase to you and you'll need to seek shelter. The map supply you with more than enough ammos and weapon to get by even on Ultra-Violence. It is by no mean a difficult map but it's great for a quick runthrough.

 

I thought after playing it that it would be a "you had to be there" sort of thing, to understand why it's a classic but I was wrong. It was easy to put myself in that 1995 mindset and when you consider the tools available at the time it's nothing short of impressive. Give it a shot, it's easy to recommend to this day, in 2022.

this is a classic but short level. it's a simple city, actually more like a small town in all honesty, and it's got enough custom assets to make it convincing as opposed to other really blocky-looking city maps. the gameplay isn't really anything past the 90's grade, with zombiemen all over the streets being the most important threat.

 

also of note is the rather classic music track Shamus Young had made for this map. he's had several other contributions, some of which are heard on DOOM32.wad, but this is his most famous music track. I'll admit his music is a guilty pleasure.

Very well done - especially if one takes into account that excellent tools like DoomBuilder weren't around and the common Doomer navigated through id's brainchild with a 486.

 

This also reminds me of the times when recreating more real environments was a lively urge of many hobbyists with the infamous trinity.wad(1994) being quite The exotic eye-candy of yesteryear(textures were based on original photos of the college building).

 

If the textures had a bit more polish, to better blend in with the original artwork, it would be even more impressive.

Solid map from 1995, visually neat and atmosphere helps the setting thrive here. Plenty of exploration and places to go around, the custom textures make some rooms stand out from others. Worth checking this WAD out even after all these years, it still holds up well.

I gotta say, for twenty years old wad it’s pretty neat. For today standards it has a little low monster count and actually it’s pretty brief, but still—it’s worth checking.

Wow, that was a fun level...Texture alignment was about perfect and the locations were a cool addition along with the custom graphics to make it fit in. For it's age, it's recommended for a playthrough. 5/5 -Mr. Chris

For a level that is not only 10 years old, but fun and challenging as well as not too overdetailed/crowded but enough detailed to make it a realistic city (well, for Doom anyway), and has fitting music and texture themes that work for this kind of level. For me this is very deserving of a 5. -ace

Another legendary map in my eyes. I remember booting this map up for the first time back in 96, and thinking that it was the most detailed city I had ever seen in a game. Some truly unique architecture especially for such an early map. This map has surprisingly faired well over the years. -Scuba

The guy that gave this level 4 stars instead of 5 has a habit of inhaling freon and paint fumes. The fact that this is almost 10 years old combined with the quality makes it a 5 star map. This map goes to show that the doom community doesnt need all these crazy new features that are being developed among various engines, but a bit of old school ingenuity. Take a look at the soft drink fridges in the Gas station; I think it is pretty clever how he pulled that off.

      It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.

      What the actual f*ck is this map. I love having 4 rockets, a shit ton of bullets and like 10 shotgun shells to take out a revenant, and whatever was in that cage. Doesn't look too bad, maybe this negativity is cus im no expert, also rather unskilled at the game?

      A basic and nice looking showroom type of map where monsters are trapped inside glass prisons, no exit and no way to play this with any modern source Port like DSDA-Doom and GZDoom, but works really well in Crispy Doom. It was a pleasant experience.
