Hexen Launch Version 2.0 (c) 1995

* HEXEN is a registered trademark of Id and Raven Software.
* DOOM ][ is a registered trademark of Id Software.
This program is SHAREWARE, so distribute freely.
Hexen Launch is a program utility used to launch multi-player games
for Hexen. It will also FULLY support DOOM ][ if the option is selected
under the DEBUG options. On exit, the program automatically saves
all settings and reloads them the next time your run it. When a
game is started, HEXL saves all of the options to a response file,
or paramter file, and passes them on to the game's multi-player
Remeber, you may enter command line arguments at the DOS prompt
when running HEXL, and the program will automatically pass them on
to DOOM ][ or HEXEN. For example you may enter: HEXL -57600 and
it will pass the argument -57600 to Doom or Hexen.
HEXL also provides a handy phone book menu, where you may store
peoples names and phone numbers. When you select a person's
number, it will automatically set the program to dial it. Make
sure if you want to dial someone that the CALL option is selected.
Along with the phone book, the Pwad Editing List alows you to list
up to 12 external game patches. However, the program will not load
these unless you make sure you have the Add Pwad List option Selected.
First of all, HEXL 2.0 is FAR SUPERIOR to HEXL 1.5.
Some new options are the Modem setup: Choose your modem (F3) and the
ability to edit your macro strings (F4). Unlike the PWAD list and
the phone book, hitting escape from the Modem setups will abort
withought saveing changes. Choose your modem will write the new
settings to MODEM.CFG in the current directory, and Define your
macros will save all chat macros to HEXEN.CFG or DEFAULT.CFG (DOOM2).
Lets review some basic option the user menu and some new options.
There are three basic connection types used to play multi-player games.
Modem: Connect to another player using a 14.4k Modem or better
Serial Cable: Connect to another player using a serial cable between
IPX Network: Connect from 2 to 4 players using a network system.
This is the meathod of connection, or how your going to link up with the
other player. If your playing on an IPX Network or Serial Cable, the
"Already connected" option should be selected. Otherwise, you may call
another player by modem or answer another player's call.
This is the communications port that your modem is using. Most modems
are set on COM 2, but if you are not sure or you do not know refere to
your modem manual or check the jumpers (settings) on your modem.
There are three base player classes, all with different stats in strength,
magic, speed, and armor. Note that this is basically pointless if your
playing DOOM ][...
Class: Speed: Armor: Magic: Strength
Fighter Good Good Poor Good
Cleric Average Average Average Average
Mage Average Poor Good Average
Note that if "Random" class is chosen the game will randomly assign a
player class to you during the game. In deathmatch mode you switch
classes every time you die and restart.
When the sysem is set up for DOOM ][ mode, instead of the option
"Player Class" apearring on the screen, the player number options
are currently available. This is a standard DOOM ][ feature and
it is definitley optional. If your going to use it, Make sure
that your player number does NOT exceed the total number of players
and that no other player is using the same player number.
Add Pwad List:
This simply tells the program to add all patches under the Pwad List
at start time.
When this option is selected, monsters in both games will automatically
respawn, or ressurect, in about 7-8 seconds after they die. This is
similar to skill level 5 (Nightmare in DOOM ][).
Tells the program to shut off all monster activity in each level at
Normally, if this option is not selected, the players work together
in the game cooperatively. When it is selected, all players work
AGAINST eachother during the game. The game will also keep track
of how many kills each player has, who killed who, and will present
a chart at the end of each level.
On some machines, DOOM and HEXEN are extremely slow or choppy, so this
option was built in to help speed up game play. The maximum is about
255, which is about running speed. Although this may sound nice,
it constantly tells the other players that your on turbo and after
about 5 minutes it REALLY gets annoying.. so blah.
When set, each level will end after a given ammout of minutes.
This is nice on deathmatch mode, where sometimes patch levels
don't have an exit. Although through many hours of game play
I've noticed that the DOOM and HEXEN timers are slightly off.
This option alows you to "Jump" directly to a level at the start of
When loading games, DOOM and HEXEN refere to them as slots 1 to 5..
But for convenience HEXL referes to the as slots 1-6, the way they
appear in the game. Don't worry, HEXL already subracts 1 from the
save game number to correct this...
In Hexen only, This option allows you to take "Screen shots" of your
current view during the game. Hexen and Doom will save them in the
.PCX format. To take a screen shot during the game simply press F1.
In Hexen, This only turns on the debugging startup mode, and currently
unknown features of debugging in the game (if that makes sense).
BUT in DOOM mode, it turns on debugging mode and allows you to take
screen shots using F1.
Record a Demo:
With both games, you can record a playable demo as a .LMP file. Although
even with Maxdemo set they cannot always be very long. DOOM and HEXEN
do not accept demo files with a .LMP extension, so HEXL only allows you
to enter a maximum of 9 characters in the record filename.
Sets the maximum size of the recording demo in Kbytes.
