I Drink Lava

· Edited by I Drink Lava

An obscure episode from 1996 reminiscent of Tim Willits' and Chris Klie's Master Level contributions, with an emphasis on switch hunts over large combat encounters. Chuck Grant's eye for detail is not as good, but the level progression is much better-paced. The highlight is a Pain Elemental mirror maze in MAP03 that displays an incredible amount of ingenuity for the time. Unfortunately, the WAD also suffers from the worst problems of the era like inescapable slime pits and unmarked doors.

Infected Area is a must-play for die-hard classic Doom fans, but people with modern tastes should look elsewhere. Make sure you pistol start each map like the author suggests, too.

Awesome lame plotline, 7 medium-size maps, simple colours, fun use of vertical space, tough and challenging gameplay (balanced for pistol-start). Solid episode.

Seven solid, consistent levels from January 1996. They're very much of a piece - mostly dungeon-slime-techba se - and they're good fun and have had some thought put into them. There are a few problems typical of the period, with some featureless mazes, and the detailing is very simple. The levels tend to be a bit long-winded as well, but overall I enjoyed them. Appears to be the author's only set of Doom levels.

One of many personal favorites. Clever puzzley maps. The best storyline too.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
