About This File

This is the first of what we hope will be many efforts to provide an inexpensive fire team simulation to the fire- team. Set up is a demonstration of the fire team in the defense. The situation is high intensity combat- with opportunity to prosecute a follow up counter attack against enemy held positions. The intent is to provide follow on improvements and enhancements following user feedback on this initial offering...

Without some imagination during gameplay, this may come off as a generic old 90s WAD, but with the historical background behind it, it is pretty cool to know that Doom was used by the US Marines to teach quick decision making in a team, as this WAD was made for 4 player co-op.

As for the WAD itself, as I said, a bit of imagination is kind of needed to get the best out of it since otherwise it is pretty easy to approach the level negatively. Some sprites have been changed, the Pistol now a rifle and the Shotgun is now a machine gun. The SUPER2.DEH (which is required) makes some interesting changes to the gameplay, especially the weapons as the rifle shoots at a fast rate, the machine gun deals high damage, and the Rocket Launcher is now just your hand throwing grenades, although the grenades themselves are just health bonuses but nice to see them explode.

It should be noted that the DEH file is a bit bugged, where the machine gun cannot be deselected properly after firing. To fix this, the DEH file will have to be edited to have frame 22's next frame be 18 and frame 31's next frame to be 1. Other than that, the WAD isn't exactly great but it is still worth looking into nonetheless. A cool piece of Doom history!

Classic! At the time of the launch of this mod i was starting wads with commands in DOS... it was -file example.wad... right? These days we have source ports and stuff... but i miss the old BOOM or the vanilla engine.

For an early 96' mod, it is great, but for now looking at it back it is not too shabby. -Beefy

SAW is a shotgun, one level, and two basic weapons that are just sprite mods sums up the bad. The good is one new enemy sprite mod and cool sounds.

Absolutely innapropriate to teach marines with this. How many real humans can run at 80mph, shrug off hundreds of bullets and fireballs, walk on lava without dying outright, and get crushed by a cieling completely and still be able to do all those things? Really, those marines were just high-fiving each other for getting their squad leader to unsuspectingly let them play doom.

This is a very interesting map in that it was made for use by the US Marines to train soldiers in tactical situations. It could be considered the precursor of America's Army, and may be worth a download if you have interest in its history. The map itself is bland and not particularly entertaining in single player, but it has some decent weapon replacements and even working grenades. It may be good for co-op and deathmatch. 3/5 -Reckoner

thank god Underhalls was the map that followed this mod as that level was able to remind me what actually competent level design looks like.

Not that bad, even kind of interesting find the secrets in the map! But yeah, that switches jungle is a awful choice really.

A basic and nice looking showroom type of map where monsters are trapped inside glass prisons, no exit and no way to play this with any modern source Port like DSDA-Doom and GZDoom, but works really well in Crispy Doom. It was a pleasant experience.

Conceptually not bad, it's a pretty imposing tower with some decent lighting, but no ammo at all despite having the guns and a VERY obscure way to rise up the floor in the lava pit? That's a big downer. But overall, it's ok.

Well, the map is pretty basic. The map is quite challenging, with there being 0 ammo pickups (excluding the backpack) outside of the starting room. There are also nazis for some reason. I will give it 2 stars only because this really wasn't meant to be played to be enjoyed, but rather just a example of how to build a map in DEU.
