About This File

PAZUZU-This single mission takes you to a demonic series of underhalls and temples to the evil devil PAZUZU. The entire complex is guarded by some of your most feverish nightmares... Stay alert and work your way thru this unearthly place in search of the three ancient skulls of mystic held within the complex..... retrieve them and escape... hopefully with all of your limbs still attached!

PAZUZU-Itself is a relatively tough level, and will certainly take you a few tries to master it and discover its workings and secrets. You will be pitted against many different scenarios in unique settings that may have you groping for health... Make each dodge and strafe your best, because you can't take many hits in this one....

paz01.lmp (included) recorded by MYSCHA the sled dog-as requested from e-mail from other releases..I have included an LMP. Of course ya' get to watch me goofin' around ....

Awesome map by one of the early mappers who really grasped how to make large and complicated maps. They hold the player's interest while still throwing him enough hints and resources to avoid frustration. It's little wonder that he soon afterwards started mapping professionally (e.g. Unreal). If you loved Bluff Eversmoking, thank Doom for the training it gave Mr Cannon!

Not really that funny, and not particularly fun.

This WAD hasn't really aged well. The gameplay isn't particularly interesting and the levels rely too much on over-using ZDoom features. The new sound effects are annoying, and the announcer's endless chatter on map04 gets downright infuriating. The ending levels are disappointing, especially the final battle which can be over in seconds. That said, the detailing looks nice in some levels.

The atmosphere was gripping and the level design good, for the most part. It was exciting to grapple with some new enemies and the double-chainsaw was a heap of fun. There was never a moment I wasn't really feeling it, either because I was low on ammo and I could hear a few dozen terrible things shuffling around for me or because I had picked up some goodies and it was time to, in turn, visit terrible things upon the enemy.    The only reason why my rating isn't 5/5 is related to that "low on ammo" remark listed above. I found myself myself at the final battle without either the health or ammo to feasibly beat the level and had to backtrack in my progress through the WAD to ensure otherwise. This wouldn't otherwise be a big problem except for the fact that I found the penultimate level to be something of a bullet-sink, not to mention a health-sink too, depending on how much ammo you had going into it in the first place.   This broke the flow of the WAD for me, but it's otherwise rather polished and I highly recommend it. I'm hungry to rip into the sequel.

a fairly modern techbase level. nothing really to it, the combat is a little less fun than I originally expected, but it progresses alright. it's got an interesting name but on the overall onset doesn't offer all that much in comparison. relaxing.

while often forgotten in time due to being a single-level wad, Tantrum 2 deserves quite a lot of credit. it's a very rough 1998 level! one of the few in fact. the monster density in ratio to the supplies provides quite a challenge, so it helps to keep healthy as much as possible (I somehow missed the one armor in this level). while only a medium-sized level, Tantrum 2 does its best to not only keep you on your toes, but to keep exploring. there's quite a few traps to look out for, along with plenty of mid-tier and high-tier enemies, particularly Hell knights and barons are used often. you can easily forget where the red key could be if you keep exploring. still, it's a worthwhile challenge.
