for 1996, this mapset looks and plays fantastic. visually, it's great; it's not memento mori 2 or dystopia 3, but it's still very visually appealing. i feel that what sets this apart from those two is the sheer scale of some of the architecture. there's towering skyscrapers, mansions, an entire spacestation - this must've been breathtaking back in '96. as a result, the levels can get quite big.

gameplay is exciting, fast-paced, and provides loads of enemies for you to kill. it's quite challenging for 1996 as well, so it holds up in that regard. there's next to nothing in terms of exploration or puzzles-solving - this is all combat. however, while the combat is great fun, it does get stale. there's not a whole lot to mix up the style of combat on display, and the maps can be quite long, so if you play too much in one sitting it's gonna become a bit of a drag. despite that, it's fun as hell if you just wanna sit down and shoot everything you see for a little while

i've heard people call this a hidden gem of the mid 90s, and honestly, it's really hard not to agree. even if it can get a bit stale after a while, it's still great to just sit down, play a level or two, and move onto other things before playing some more a few days later

I'm not really a reviewer so I'll be brief. Dark Covenant is an underrated classic, perhaps best known for inspiring Erik Alm of Scythe fame to map. No really, check out MAP07 if you doubt me. 25 years later, it still holds up in my opinion - sure, it's raw but manages to keep your attention for the entirety of your journey, which is a rare quality not found in many wads, let alone wads of the past millennium. An oft-overlooked gem, recommended!

Starts out just like any other myhouse.wad, you know, sector furniture, some beds, some kind of sector bedsheets and some toilets, obvious, the most silliest start i may say, but then grows into a mastodon of gigantic, atmospheric and challenging semi-reallistic maps.

Maps are, seriously big, and there are constant fire, especially from hitscanners from everywhere.
The maps are soo big, that, even when the layout and gameplay are kinda linear, there is soo much space to explore that the maps doesn't feel linears at all.

The sights are gorgeous, breathtaking, and thats something really awesome for a wad from 1996.

The challenge is right out there, centered mostly on hitscanning barrages on every room with meat blockers, cannon fodder and heavy hitter.

The details are really good for the time it was made. A highway broken above us, computers, skycrappers, depth of earth, and a heavily guarded portal from hell are just some of the locales we visit.

And the final launch base with the gigantic ship waiting to depart.

Thats is just amazing!

why not 5 stars if i liked it soo much?

Well, the final map, even when its sheer wonderfull, its anti-climatic, making the player feel that the mapset is incomplete.

Aside from that, this is just 90's sillyness with some refined and reallistic details.

Pretty much what i want from Doom ;)

Thank you, Keith Phipps.

This little mapsets its just awesome!

Metallica (midis) and ruined city landscapes in a long twelve map adventure. Classic.

** Dark Covenant Review **

- Played all 12 levels on Ultra Violence

Pros:

- LOADS of Ammo, Health, Armor, and everything else you need to succeed.

- Great monster placement.

- 90's themed and well done with that!

- Smooth maps. Nothing fancy, yet nothing bland. Map rooms ran seamlessly together. I didn't encounter any bugs or HOM whatsoever. Bravo on that!

Cons:

- I love Metallica, but, UGHHHH!! Enough already! LOL!!! At least do the actual songs instead of the "elevator music" tracks.

- This game could have used more puzzles. This made the Maps quite a bit linear.

- Very few secrets. I would have liked to have seen more. The secrets didn't exactly slap you in the face, but if you pull up the Auto Map, you shouldn't have too much difficulty.

- Chaingunners galore!!!

- ANY final boss would have great. Just seems anti-climatic without one...or two or three...

All and all, I must say Dark Covenant is not the worst game I've played nor was it the best. I admit I had a bit of fun with this.

I liked Map 3 the best. I don't recall the name of it, but it takes place "Downtown." None of the rest of the maps are as good as this one.

If you are looking for 90's style maps with emphasis on combat, rather than puzzle solving, then this WAD is for you. I would recommend HMP (nothing easier) or UV to appreciate the game.

Definitely some nostalgia there. Thanks!

Overall 3 out of 5 stars.

Not great but the combat is fast and straitforward.

Excellent, no nonsense wad. At 12 levels this is an ideal length, something to get one's teeth into but which doesn't outstay its welcome, as most megawads do. I wish more wads would just keep things moving along like this one - straightforward blasting action, going from A to B to C without being waylaid by pointless, timewasting puzzles and gimmicks at regular intervals. Despite its essential simplicity, in no way is it boring: the combat is involving and the architecture and scenery are well crafted. Probably needs to be played on UV difficulty to be a decent challenge for anyone but a novice.

Rather impressive considering its age. Great gameplay, great variety between maps, and some surprisingly good architecture.

Huge work. For a 1996 attempt, it offers a lot of nice long adventures. But a more modern eye sees that the texture use is far too limited, the map layout is based on quite simple scenes, and the monster placement is totally predictable. Which gives playing the feeling of over and over and over again walking in the same scene doing the same fights, making it dead boring. But rated as 1996 wad: obviously 4*, because in that time it would have given a lot of fun.

simple level pack/episode. Not expectional, but of fairly even quality. Not too difficult. The early levels set in urban terrain are best; After that quality drops. Pretty rudimentary graphics-vice, but the wad is quite old.

Actually one of the first mapsets I ever played. It was also thanks to this wad that I became obsessed with Thrash Metal when I was a little kid, too.

it certainly has the gameplay to make up for the apparent design and linearity. in fact, it was a really fun wad to play. on the other hand the author must really love Metallica.

It is downright baffling that this didn't make it in the 10 years of of DOOM Top 100. Excellent stuff all around for its time.

This wad has a very good style with good fights throughout. Perhaps the first level is a bit silly (though not unfun) but it certainly starts to pick up from there, both visually and in respect to action. The only (small) drawback may be that it relies a bit much on the SSG and too little on rockets and plasma. Perhaps it's an injustice that it didn't make it to the Top 10 for '96 here in Doomworld's "10 Years" feature. [4/5] ~Chain Mail (11/2007)

It's ok. It does get better as you play through the later levels. 3.5/5

There are a handful of great maps in this old PWAD, but unfortunately the crappy filler outweighs the brilliance. I suggest you just play MAP03 and MAP07 because they're amazing, and all the maps after 7. The rest of the levels just don't hold up well. 3.5/5

It's actually really not bad at all. Maybe it's not the best map set of the world, but later levels have interesting design. Not as coherent as other projects, but still quite enjoyable as a whole.

This is a creative WAD with many pretty large atmospheric maps. I like the music even though I am not a Metallica fan. (Doesn't sound too bad once it is digitalized and the vocals are taken out (:) A challenging WAD with more than a few greater demons on each map. Be ready to be engaged in a lot of fast paced battles against small hordes of revenants or barons. The map styles change as you progress through the MOD which adds a nice feeling of travel. This definitely deserves a 5/5. -VonWolfenstein

This is one of the few wads that is as good as everyone says it is. Don't let the age of this WAD fool you, its very nicely done (especially when you consider the time frame). Some of the best looking (and most convincing) looking city maps ever made for Doom 2. This is a true legend that all other maps should be judged by. Simple yet stately architecture delivers where pointless details do not. 5 Stars.

It turned out to be a surprise for me because I didn't expect it to be such a fun level, when he said he wanted a lot of monsters in his level I didn't imagine that amount of monsters, but it was definitely fun.   I consider it a very good map, for its time, for a first map made by him, for a very humble map.   But overall I don't consider it a great or extraordinary experience, I don't see myself revisiting Crusher, but I can't call it Average because what he did is super interesting.   And it's a long level, which I also didn't expect, but to be more precise, the exploration is interesting, the layout was a little diverse, and the action on the map kept me focused and entertained, some rooms had poorly aligned textures and didn't seem to have been looked at at the last minute, which is a bit strange because he said he spent a lot of time developing the map, but I imagine why since at that time there wasn't an "Ultimate DOOM Builder" with automatic texture alignment, or maybe there was one automatic alignment?   And the maze everyone mentioned was annoying, yes I admit it lasted a lot longer than it should have, and I feel like it could have been shortened in Wad's release, it made the level feel longer than it is too, but I don't feel so much that the level it got worse because of it.   The positioning of enemies isn't that great, but they make you take cautious measures at times, but at times I was like... "It could be better..."   But that's it, it's a good level, it hasn't aged well, it could be better, but I feel like it would be unfair to call this level average, it's a level that I enjoyed, did things that weren't that common at the time, and seemed to use of resources that at the time many used wrongly, I don't feel like I wasted my time. I deserve to see more from the mapper.... (If he released something after that of course...)

Surprising even, one of the newest community maps out there, 1994, wow, but it's still a bad map, the encounters are interesting, the layout is the most superior aspect here, but it still doesn't support the technical errors that even for 1994 were already guaranteed by the original DOOM maps. Weird textures, lack of variety, lack of a more interesting design than platforms going down or going up in the dark, some moments were really fun like the dark cave itself, but the fun lasts very little, with spaces that are too tight, and a shallow exploration.

I love Quake, it's my favorite Shooter, and I totally forgive the lack of detail and technical refinement that Mapper concluded here, but I have to say that even though the map is still recognizable compared to the classic E1M1 from Quake... The map just doesn't have such a refined texturing, a good light variation, and many of the areas don't even carry the classic Quake identity, as the best example: The part where we get the Nailgun, there aren't even monsters and an encounter with Zombiemans in that room , there is very little positive to consider here unfortunately, but it was a bit fun in some parts. Either way, there are a lot of negative things that make it impossible to ignore while playing the level, a horrible map, how sad.

Normally I would define these two maps as maps with interesting premises whose execution does not positively complement the result, Chicken.wad has such a simple layout that it is disappointing at first sight, which keeps you at a higher height than Cyberdemons that you They wait in sectors that flash between dark and very light, I can only be direct in saying that although the battle between the Cyberdemons is fun, the map doesn't present you with anything other than that, and it is even impossible to cross the other side of the bridge endless to eliminate the rest of Cyberdemons. Completing Chicken (Even though Chicken doesn't have an exit on his map.).   Let's go to Gangstar.wad, you can see a somewhat open space, different from the previous experience, but with the classic theme of a UAC warehouse style E2M2 from DOOM, but the boxes here are a little distorted? (Perhaps spacetime begged the mappers not to finish the maps so it distorted the map space causing this visual curse.) As much as the open spaces of the map are fun to navigate, the fun is short-lived with several of the structures being distorted. carrying with them ill-adjusted texturing. Clearly a superior map to the previous one, but unfortunately still poor, the repetitiveness of the texturing, plus a bland design and several other missing details, make this map yet another disappointment unfortunately.   The verdict is that both maps are completely disposable, I would love for the mappers to continue with their work after such complicated work, so they would at least be able to build more and improve the quality of their design work.

One of the classic megawads, and the successor to TNT Evilution. I've played this several times over the years, and its grown on me more with each play as my tastes mature.   Still has a bunch of maps that got me killed in 2024, after ive finished stuff like HR and AV, and plenty of maps are memorable. Only real downsides is some of the levels have little content, showing its age.
