About This File

OSIRIS Total Conversion is the much-expanded sequel to I, ANUBIS (a DOOMGATE "Best Doom2 of all time" level). OSIRIS makes that one look like pac-man.

OSIRIS contains incredible new monsters, textures, graphics, and sounds (326 new sprites!). Loosely (very loosely) based on the movie "STARGATE". Designed to be DIFFICULT, with serious thought applied to gameplay, lighting, architecture, immersion, and theme.

Gameplay will be best on ULTRAVIOLENT in single-player or co-op modes. Provision for deathmatch is not included. OSIRIS is NOT so huge as to slow your machine to a crawl, but faster machines will, of course, play better.

OSIRIS is a totally immersive experience. A connoisseur's wadset. Not for the weak.

Requires doom2 1.9 or a deft hand with dehacked. Really. This won't work with other versions. The upgrade patches are freely available at cdrom.com in the idstuff directory or in Compuserve's ACTION GAMES forum.

Epic adventure through egyptian research laboratories, tombs and pyramids. Outstanding music by Jeremy Doyle.
Some new enemies, textures and ambient sounds. Love the theme and smell. It's creepy.

the OSIRIS Total Conversion, which is really more of a partial conversion, is more or less the original Epic. this tells quite a lot given how popular the Egyptian theme became once both Epic and Epic 2 hit the community. but Osiris was first, gave us quite a lot of cosmetic changes, the Egyptian theme mixed in with the techbase theme rather well. on the difficulty scale you're not really gonna find much in actual challenge, as monsters tend to be the newly cosmetic ones most of the time. the Anubis is a reskinned imp with a better projectile but that's it. the Pharoah is a hilariously easy arch-vile variant with not much in challenge, and neither are the bats, blue marines, or scythe-wielding guys. all these make up the bulk of the monsters with a few vanilla ones here and there.

 

maps are fairly standard, medium-sized, and the design evokes shades of TiC maps from the Memento Moris that came out in the same year. a few traps as one might expect but nothing someone who's played Obituary can't handle. it's a good one for nostalgia, has some fun factor that holds up, and well it's pretty neat overall.

Totally a blast!
From the get go, you are surrounded by new textures, new enemies, and atmospheric sounds. The music by Jeremy Doyle is totally outstanding.

Excellent mapping and very challenging, excellent new weapons, and amazing ambientation. This is how a partial convertion is made!
Who can spect that this mapset was from 1996? Same year of Memento Mori Duology, Icarus: Alien Vanguard, All Hell is Breaking Loose and Dystopia 3? For me, that i played those mapsets, this is far more simplier, but also, far more coherent, making for a perfect balance.

Why a 4,5 and not a 5? well, is too short. But is understandable that they sacrifices quantity over quality.
If one can make a megawad of 32 maps out of this, that would be far beyond perfect.
Aside from that, i love it!
And time make this one justice as in 2018 it was included on one of the top best megawads that missed a cacoward!

Fantastic wad. The level design is very 90s - people today would scoff at the abundance of mazes & corridors. But to me it's still fun despite not being fancy & curvy, with very large and labyrinthine (yet simple & rewarding to navigate) layouts with plenty of creativity. Most of the maps have original music, which is all great and fittingly Egypt-esque. Some of the weapons have been reskinned, and look quite nice. The weapon sound replacements are a bit hit & miss (for example the single-barrel sound is oddly... crispy), but not all bad. Almost all of the enemies have been reskinned as well, and some have been altered with Dehacked. The sprites look very cool, especially the spooky Pinky replacement. Unfortunately there is a ZDoom bug where if you gib a soldier, they will spurt out ammo endlessly. Also there is a loud sound effect used in a couple of levels that will annoyingly repeat infinitely (I had to replace the relevant sound with a blank file for my sanity). Whether that's the wad's fault or ZDoom's, I don't know. Overall a great TC, especially for its age - I'd consider it a forgotten classic.

Haha I've found an interesting glitch when playing this in ZDoom 2.2.0... When inflicting a "splatter kill" on zombie soldiers, they will infinitely spawn ammo/weapon drops. A great way to ensure that one doesn't run out of ammo to be sure, but once it begins to bog down the computer, it becomes a bit inconvenient... :'D -The Unholy

^ Yes, long-standing bug in Zdoom's dehacked support. Known about for years and they've no intention of fixing it, AFAIK. Not the wad's fault at all, and it gets 5/5.

Gameplay is fairly easy on UV, but the WAD is awesome for its atmosphere, textures, great sounds, cool weapons patches and overall ambience. Cool architecture, too. Easily my favorite TC -- a real work of art. -- Steve Duff

I think nostalgia is what brings most people back to this wads, not too surprising. I like some of the textures but just didn't catch me. 3/5

I dunno, kinda cheezy, and just so-so. Just cuz you set your levels in some stargate/egypt theme doesn't mean you can make them uninspired and boring.

      Pretty entertaining and challenging mapset. The maps start in a somewhat heretic or cave theme at first, and with a really abstract style with just tiny little realistic details. It use TNT as iwad and there are just a few maps with name patches. The rest and the text screens are the ones from TNT. The story is interesting: Serena, B.J. Blazkowicz's wife, worried that, after the incident on 20 Days In Hell (but it could be also after Doom 2 final map), he hasn't returned home yet. So she decide to go search for him. In the proces she found that every map we play is an hour of torture for her husband, and thats from where the title 32 Hours of Pain come. Thematically, the maps use the TNT skies to tell the story, starting with Serena on earth, vayaging throught space on map12 to map20, and reaching hell where her husband is being tortured on map21 to map30   Maps have a good gameplay, and the little and few details really stand out from the abstract design, like in map11 the ship sailing out to space. The design varies from really large and big open areas to really cramped and difficult to traverse tunnels and areas. Thus, it somehow really grasp the TNT feel and style. This also implies, sometimes, obscure progression and switch hunting. The texturing is varied, from monotexturing to using different themes like starbase and marble on the same map, especially on those where the hellish influece is seen as bigger.   I really enjoyed it! Its not a masterpiece, but it certaily has a charm and offers a good challenge. Kristian Aro's story, maybe i'm wrong with this, was use as a base for 2002: A Doom Odyssey later as its pretty similar. This mapset is kinda analogue to Paul Corfiatis The Twilight Zone. Both follow a free thematic texturing from map to map, both have a story mostly told throught little details (TTZ has a proper mapinfo on it, though) and both shows the first mapping efforts of their respective authors and how the ideas here lead to their later awesome mapsets.   I recommend it to anyone who is seeking abstract design and challenge.

      Very decent map from 1995. As previous comments said, it looks like a workplace with two floors tons of openable doors.   The gameplay is very classic but very enjoyable. The progression may be quite confusing, especially about finding the yellow key which was hidden in a little compartment as if it was a secret. However , discovering each room was a pretty exciting experience.    Also this level has a cool sense of place. I really like the idea of creating "elevators" by using teleporters as well as the partially demolished 2nd floor.    Despite being an easy level, some traps may kill you like the surprise monster closet with barons near the author's signature located at the beginning.   Aesthetics are ok but I really enjoyed the use of light gradiants in some corridors , they make the stock textures look a lot better !
