About This File

A five-level wad for Heretic, incorporating numerous new graphics. The appearance of each level is quite different; there is no unifying theme except that the action takes place on a series of islands. If I could have figured out how to replace the end screens, (assuming it's possible with Heretic), I would have named the levels:

1) On the Beach 2) Subterranea 3) Skull Mountain 4) The Flying Dutchman 5) Circus Maximus

Three of the levels are quite large (Circus Maximus is over 700K); I have been told that Gulag plays "too choppy" on a 486, so the wad may require a Pentium, or similar processor, for smooth gameplay.

Awesome map set, maybe the first Heretic wad in history with this achievement (sorry if I forgot older outstanding wads)? It consists of five maps with the level of detail never seen before. Several of the maps are multistory as well... The gameplay is mainly puzzle-based, very much like Hexen, so if you want straightforward gameplay, this wad is not for you. Generally though, you should revisit the areas a lot, as some new location gets open. The difficulty is not that high, but you should save at the beginning of each level, because I'm not sure they can be wand-started.

Architecturally great. But new textures is motley, work with light is lame, gameplay, oriented on cave crawling with savegames is fault. **

I didn't play all Heretic levels (How could I?) but this is simply the BEST I ever did play. Great style of mapping, big, really epic Levels, a Pwad you will never forget!

This is a great set of levels, with clever puzzles and game play with some tight fights. I love it. 5/5 Kristus.

Great! 5 stars! Awesome, well-detailed level design and new textures, very splendid. For those who like Eternal Doom, this is a must play! The levels are enormous with a lot of switch-hunting to confuse you :) and wtf 1997? that's quite nice for its time.

Decent WAD you have here. The cave parts were boring and summed up to be relentless switch hunts while the later levels were wonderful. 4/5

I would say "Best Heretic WAD ever", but I don't have tested all Heretic WADs avaiable. The fact remains that I love this one, levels have an "Eternal-ish" style with their puzzles and triggers. I need more PWADs like this one ! Legendary for sure. 5/5. ~Naan

The first level is epic, and then the second builds on it ever moreso. I don't like how you have to wait so long to get the Dragonclaw, same with the Hellstaff and the Phoenix Rod also. It's not designed for wand-starts in any level which is a let down, and the third level is truly infuriating as going back and forth between 5 floors all the time is time consuming and it gets very monotonous.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
