The Unholy Trinity

About This File

A reasonable representation of Trinity College, Cambridge. "Oh no, not again," I hear you cry. "Some lamers' first WAD. Prob'ly got a cyber in there." But wait! Read on. Much cannon fodder. Many new graphics. Cool bits. Guaranteed entertainment or your money back (see below for terms and conditions of this offer). And NO cyberdemon! Well... oh, never mind. Although designed for single player, has multiplayer weapons and starts, and large, well interconnected areas. Version 2 fixes a bug and some ugly bits.

Awesome texture work and some nifty editing tricks (a mini-cinema). Tons of work in a unique 94' wad.
The pinnacle of myhouse.wad. Impressive.

Trinity is, as far as I know, the first real attempt in Doom to try and make a level based on a real life location. In this case, it is a recreation of the Trinity College at Cambridge. Today something like this would at the very least be considered taboo for obvious reasons, but back in 94 the idea of recreating a real place in a 3D environment like Doom was exciting. And unlike other attempts by map makers to recreate their house/school/workplace, Trinity also stands out with "realistic" custom textures all thanks to a few pictures the author took with his camera.

Having never been to the actual Trinity College I can't say how accurate map layout is to the real building, but the map does seem laid out like a real place, save for a few liberties made for gameplay and engine limitations. There are a few outdoor courtyards, a cafeteria of sorts, a classroom, a chapel, a pretty cool movie theater, and smaller miscellaneous rooms the player will run across. Aside from very basic and obvious details that give away what these rooms are supposed to be, they are otherwise quite bare save for enemies and items. The smaller rooms suffer the most from this, being simple boxes with a bad guy or some kind of item in it and a single door. At the very least the level layout feels open enough that you can explore at your own leisure, but this can make finding out where exactly to go next difficult; specifically the hunt for the exit in the end. It isn't a terribly tough level, but it makes decent enough usage of its enemies outside and indoors to stop the player from bull-rushing straight through.

All in all it is an alright map to play solo, so long as you don't mind being a little lost and can get past how empty it feels at points.  I personally suspect it might make a slightly better map to DM in, but it probably isn't something you will come back to for a second helping.

very extraordinary, especially for its time. I wish there were more such maps.

Interesting for the texture work recreating a real location, but other than that it's nothing special. @The_Laughing_Llamma , there's an exit: it's the button behind the red door. The map can be completed.

as far as i can tell there's no map exit which was pretty confusing i spent half an hour trying to figure out where to go eventually i looked up a tutorial on youtube which just ended without continuing to the next level apart from that minor gripe its a pretty good map the textures are especially good considering its from 94 overall i give it a four out of five pretty bland by today's standards but for its time quite an impressive

The map is extremely blan and boring, the gameplay is dull and the music is extremely repetitive and annoying, this has got to be the worst map ive ever played.

haters have no clue how much work went into this wad. They didn't have the tools that make it so you can do this in 48 hours without having to leave your house. fixing bugs wasn't a few clicks here and there like it is now. 1994 was taking pictures of the school, developing them, then scanning them, then converting them to proper sizes and resolution for the game.

Nice early 1994 level. Has new textures which nowadays look too oldfashioned, but in those times they gave a nice ambiance. Varying gameplay ensures a nice adventure-feeling. Rated according to 2015 standards: below meh due to too many flaws, but in 1994 playing it gave a lot of fun, so solid 4*.

IMO, it still deserves 5.0 today. I mean how many maps try to actually portrait real places and with real live breathing photos for the textures. When I play this wad today, I still think it's simply fun running around a college or school. I bet it plays even better in multiplayer! Great! Score: 5/5

It may not deserve 5 stars when compared to today's standards, but considering it's age it's absolutely brilliant.

The most impressive part is definitely the new textures, though from a mapping perspective it's pretty good as well. And DEU is hard as balls to use.

This ranks as the only tolerable and even remotely playable "School" WAD I've come across (even though koulu.wad had its moments). Maybe that's not saying much, though. --3/5

The "legendary" rating was created for WADs like this one. 15 years later the sheer grandeur of the concept doesn't fail to inspire awe. BTW, you will need id=3258 to play this with Ultimate DOOM. - N_A

Ehhh, it's OK. Coulda used some cooler music (It's that Bach/Gradius tune)and it could been a little smaller. But I have to admit, this is a VERY thought out map. Looks cool for deathmatch.

4 stars considering its age, 2 for a level today. It's just too easy, no challenge at all on ultra violent. Nice looking though.

4/5 Even after hearing 10 years of hype, I was blown away by the attention to detail and humor throughout. (My favorite texture is probably the bicycle sign.) Like a real building, there are many possible routes to each checkpoint, including a few "steam tunnel" secret passages. I do agree with the Usenet reviews from 1994: playability and difficulty are undistinguished, with incredibly repetitive zombie emplacements, giant courtyards for infighting, and a steady diet of baron traps in the second half.

This is a classic old level from September 1994, with lots of custom textures, which must have taken some doing in 1994 - they look like scans from film prints, although the Apple Quicktake did exist at the time. The map itself is a typical hotel / school level, i.e. lots of small square rooms, but the architecture is decent and there are enough monsters to keep it going. It even has a "cutscene". I hope they all got good marks at whatever degrees they were doing.

If you want to play this in doom 2, you just have to rename the map name (using XWE or somethin like that) to MAP01, and get rid of the music, because doom 2's map01 music is alot better.

Actually, a somewhat easier way to play it in Doom2 is to download the Doom2 version of the wad, also available in the archive.
