About This File

Single level with lots of new graphics. This is a sequel to the Pleiades level where you captured the starship pleiades. (you may wish to download Pleiades, which can be found at the same sites as this level under the names Pleiade2.zip and Pleiade3.zip; Pleiade2.zip is for Doom2 versions before 1.9 while Pleiade3.zip is for Doom2 versions 1.9 and later.) Mir will run under all versions of Doom2. Note: Pleiades and Mir are not compatible for combination into a single multilevel PWAD nor for play under the same loading of Doom2. They have different sky and wall textures assigned to the same names. Play action features random monster placement which gives the action a different twist each time it is played. Finally, this level is a standard patch wad that does not alter the main Doom wad and is playable with the standard -file parameter.

Sequel to Pleiades. Beautiful spaceship but going through it is a headache. Add random monsters to it. To see but not to have fun.

A level taking place inside a Russian space station, and the moment the TITLEPIC appears it would look like you're in for something that stands out. In terms of visuals and level architecture, Mir does deliver on that, featuring solid atmosphere with a great skybox and attention to detail on what would be inside a space station. However, gameplay is set to the side where instead of having fixed enemy placement, instead monster spawns are "randomized" and you'll encounter different monsters scattered around the map, meaning that no two playthroughs of the map will be the same, at least in theory. While this may sound beneficial to the map, this makes the map rather annoying to play since in cases you'll find a Baron near a door and immediately scratch off a good chunk of your health, or in other cases an Imp who would just be a pushover.

The map is also pretty cryptic, such as there being five switches to press on a wall that would appear as a map for the space station, of which two switches would require Keycards and the other three are switches that open locked doors to make traveling the level faster. And while the map is great in visuals, the actual level design is cramped and the actual layout isn't good for gameplay. Add this to the problems just mentioned and Mir is a level that can be defined as style over substance, and personally the lack of substance made the map not really fun to play for me.

I love this for the first efforts for realistic architecture...with good ideas, new effects, new textures. Exellent... I download all "Roger Ritenour" wads now..!!

Interesting idea, but not quite good implemented. Most new textures are good, some are dull. Layout is cramped, as you can expect from the MIR. Gameplay is not good, due to its layout, the gameplan and the monster placement. Overall: 3*

Nice, a wad about a Russian space station. Gameplay is rather secondary here: the level is mainly about admiring the cool views and impressive texture work. Monster placement is almost entirely randomized similarly to e.g. Phobos Map01. I didn't like the part where you're supposed to press on the same picture several times: very counterintuitive. Overall kind of cool, just not really fun to play. The soulsphere is purely decorative I guess.

This is the 2nd wad in the "Pleiades" series. It's a semi-maze level with good atmosphere and random enemy placement. It's better than Pleiades, but the key card puzzle was confusing at first. This seems to be the beginning of Roger's "narrow pitch-black hallway" fetish that culminated in earth.wad. Still, the spacewalking part is a classic Doom moment. 3.5/5

This was great. I loved the graphics and how the level was set up. There were plenty of secrets, too. Very cool. --Zell_1388

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
