About This File

This wad is 259kb when unzipped.

Usually, I don't like secrets in doom maps because they bore me. However, in the spirit of 'Tricks & Traps', which was the original map08, I thought I would include a few puzzles in this one.

Note - you must solve the secrets to finish the map. I have put clues in but have no idea how easy / hard they are???

If, like me, you just can't be bothered, then see the bottom of this text file for how to get the keys.

There are also a couple of cruel tricks in this map - so save often!

The eighth dickie map is a complex key and switch hunt reminiscent of Jim Flynn's works, but on a much smaller scale. Some of the puzzles are a bit obtuse, with the solutions usually being a random wall that lowers behind you. One particularly nasty one involves a yellow key trap that insta-gibs you without warning unless you take a leap of faith onto a random ledge opened by the same switch that temporarily opens a teleporter in a wall behind where the escape teleporter in that slime pit take you. Aside from those issues, the map has excellent lighting and detail for the time and a few tricky encounters too.

This is good but flawed. The architecture is cleand simple in an E1 style, although there are lots of Doom 2 monsters. It's not particularly hard but there's a steady lot of action. It's marred by the heralded tricks; the red key and blue keys aren't too hard to get, although they're switch-hunty, but the instant death with the yellow key is completely unpredictable unless you read the author's readme, which explains all the secrets, thus making them pointless. Apart from that it's fun.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
