About This File

Phobos is a 4 level pwad set under a spectacular Phobos sky with Mars, the Red Planet, looming malevolently on the horizon. It loosely follows the story line of the first 4 Doom I levels but with larger, more spectacular, more challenging levels. Briefly, the levels are as follows:

HANGER: You will discover a spaceport, complete with ticket counters and boarding gates that will have you boarding the next flight to get the hell out of there!

NUCLEAR PLANT: This is where the electricity to power Phobos Base is generated. It is complete with nuclear reactor, steam generators, fuel storage pools, turbine hall, switch yard, and nuclear dump site. Your opposition will not want to let this place go!

TOXIN REFINERY: UAC had an industrial chemical plant at Phobos Base complete with fractional distillation towers, chemical reactors, storage tanks, and control center. Your opposition has taken it and subverted into processing evil toxins!

COMMAND AND CONTROL: This is the control center for the entire Phobos Base and the surrounding space of the Mars planetary system. This may be the place where the hellspawn of your opposition first invaded and decapitated the command and control structure for the entire Mars planetary system. They entered clandestinely from below!

Taking into account the date this WAD was launched (1998) we can see why it is so admired and held in such high esteem. It is a WAD that for our modern times can be considered boring and old, but we must be able to transport our mind to the classical times. Phobos gave birth to an experiment and innovation never seen before, made with such care and capacity that you can still hear the echo it made.

Of course, the gameplay is a factor that can be a little uncomfortable, since it wasn't as well thought out as the graphic design, especially the placement of enemies and items, but still, it's just a milestone, guys.

It is an important piece of history in showing us how an author was able to break the limits and go beyond what the standard established; as the saying goes, don't point to the sky, point to Phobos.

I was wowed by the amount of special effects on display for something as simple as vanilla Doom 2. Despite complains about the gameplay, I found myself enjoying it for the most part; it only felt a bit wonky to have the monsters teleporting in random locations which wasn't the most ideal setup for the amount of close quarters combat you'll be having in some tighter spaces. Someone could end up not having a good time with the monster placement getting randomized while it plays nicer for others. There's some dark caves and vent tunnels, and lots of wonderful little touches throughout like animated vent fans, a plane taking off, a computer running Doom II and other detail treasures. I would liken it to a Doom museum with a gameplay gimmick that may not fancy most Doomers out there, but I quite enjoyed my time exploring the world (or moon) of Phobos. I only wish it had more maps.

This is the first custom wad I ever played, actually I don't even know how it had appeared in my Doom folder back then. Anyway after I learnt how to actually run it, I enjoyed the interesting layout and new textures. Also the gameplay is very different compared to Doom 2, which I found interesting at first. However I am sorry to say I didn't enjoy levels 2-3 very much. Surely there is an idea behind this design, but the gameplay is tiring.

Solid 3 stars thanks to Map01, which I like a lot.

The special effects and decor look surprisingly good for a vanilla WAD and the mapset is worth checking out for the architecture alone. The gameplay is unfortunately lackluster with monsters spread around willy-nilly, and in fact it might be better to play with nomonsters on and just focus on exploring the level and beholding the visuals.

It has some decent architecture especially the first level and i found the shuttle sequence very cool but as people said monster placement and spawns are very random and anoying. Also the tunnels are quite spooky and annoying at the same time aswell as on the third level you can get clipped through the tunnel/vents by overwhelming enemies which is very dissapointing but still a good collection of maps and amazing scenery of space and planets.

When people talk about Ritenour's WADs they often mention this and Earth. I don't know why they mention Earth at all because it is garbage, but this at least has interesting structures and something resembling gameplay. It's still fairly medicore now.

Levels are bland, large, and force a lot of backtracking. No thought is put into enemy placement, as 90% of them in a mixed assortment just teleport in at some random part of the map. The levels also feature a lot of traveling through long, claustrophobic brown dark tunnels. Sure I guess its sky and some of its architecture is impressive for vanilla capabilities, but the levels are just so boring and lifeless, among other design flaws.

if only trying to get 100% kills wasn't as tough as it was when I had played, then this would have been outstanding. there's a few HOM's in the Toxin Refinery map too.

A most interesting concept that is well realized in this 4-map set of simple but breathtaking maps. The architectural tricks are astounding and the gameplay is fun albeit a bit simple. It reminds me of Iikka Keränen's works in Dystopia for some reason. If there's one major gripe I have about these maps, it's that they are simply too dark. I wouldn't go so far as to call these maps "legendary" but they are an astounding effort. --4/5

Great fun, visually impressive and a striking technical feat, especially for 1998. There are a couple of lapses - you can waltz the first level unmolested if you don't shoot (the monsters don't warp in) and the dark areas on level four are aggravating. But still, it's great. Best of all it has a moody atmosphere, especially the outsidey bits.

Fun, atmospheric levels, a bit too dark, and the music on the first map is a bit annoying, but overall it's amazing! The author had really cool ideas about how to give a 3D feeling to a 2.5D game! And all this compatible with doom2.exe! Well done! Legendary. 5/5

Very realistic, makes you feel like you are really on Phobos. Not somewhere on Earth. Nice big levels too.

The architecture, detailing and atmosfere of this levels are all incredible. This is a very original levelset that just shows how much place for good imagination there is for dooming. Some have criticised the gameplay, but I actually like it. I think I prefer this set to "Earth". A 5.

I'm truly amazed: 5* for 4 levels with thát many design flaws, bugs and overall quite poor gameplay? Seriously guys, one great sky does not make a bad level good, not to say even legendary... As author does have a few good ideas: 2/5 instead of plain awful.

Pretty cool. The level design is excellent and the new textures are really cool like that jet at the end of MAP01. It's a bit dark though and the sky textures are fucked up in ZDoom. 4.5/5

The KDiZD of the 20th century, and arguably a lot more fun. Somebody should do a MEGAR DETAILZ0R version of this, with a small amount of scripting to enhance it

Pretty long maps and there are some real stinkers in there like map 19. But overall, its fun even though it can get frustrating at times.

A fun, non-linear base level somewhat on the easy side but still worth playing and has good replayability.

The only thing good about this set of maps are the encounters which are balanced. All the rest are horrible, noob designing with invisible pillars in all the maps, unavoidable damage without radsuits, keys required to progress in secret places, hidden teleport required to progress, everything bad in designing you can find in those maps. Be sure to avoid this, certainly one of worst set of maps I've ever played.

How could i miss this gem for all this time... This is going to inspire me so much, level design is fantastic, top level creativity and a nice challenge. Texture usage is perfect and new sprites and monsters fit in perfectly.   1000/5, easily one of the best megawads ever made! Thank you Skillsaw!!

I'd have to say this is a pretty creative one for Doom 2, its hard with lots of enemies, kind of plays like a direct sequel to Doom 2 in a lot of ways. One thing I will say is that the puzzles are hard to figure out, and might take you awhile to solve (use your map). The music is fantastic though, you don't really miss the classic music, and it's engaging to gameplay.   I will say though, like Doom 2 or Plutonia, ultraviolence is pretty brutal and isn't for everyone. You will get swarmed by absurd amounts of monsters at times, and they'll give you a beating, but it's doable. I'd say the puzzles will snag you more than the monsters, level 2 is a real humdinger, lol.   But, it's a big improvement over wads like Perdition's Gate, the mapping style is pretty creative. I give it 5/5, just so people will try it out.
