London, Birmingham and Liverpool riots

Recommended Posts

Not sure how much it's being broadcast in other countries, but it's pretty much the only thing being talked about in the UK at the moment. It looks like 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' has come early, only these apes clearly aren't very intelligent.

It started with the shooting of a single criminal and his family deciding to kick off about it, but now it's descended into a load of yobs looking for an excuse to loot their local sportswear stores and set fire to everything in sight. The police seem somewhat ill equipped to handle the situation, as it's starting to look like something out of Left 4 Dead.

Some are suggesting there are valid underlying causes for the violence, but I honestly can't decide whether that argument holds up when faced with such degenerate behaviour.

Thoughts?

Rioting, looting, and attacking police typically isn't the way to get things done if you have a good reason, but who knows? Maybe after this has settled down more, there will be a more clear explanation for this.

The economy has people stressed everywhere. I like how they tried to pull that pig trick of blaming the victim (it was actually another cop who shot the cop :roll(

Glad I'm living in a relatively quiet area of the UK where most teenagers are quite content to just smoke on the corner and nothing more.

You could say the underlying causes are the spark; while the vast quantity of opportunists are the gas leak. A tiny amount of people start shit up -- for their own reasons, which you can find good or not -- and then looters and vandals take advantage of the chaos to steal and break stuff; creating more chaos that attracts even more of their ilk.

This wouldn't be happening if the opportunists weren't confident they'd get away with it. The reasons for this confidence is that, well, it's not the first manifestation of social unrest in recent history and certainly not the last, and it's been allowed to escalate as both the population's resentment and the government's perceived incompetence have steadily increased.

Riots don't happen without underlying feelings of resentment and hopelessness. Tottenham, the place in London where it all started, is a shithole where everybody is poor, unemployed and disenfranchised. People who have money don't riot because they actually have something to lose.

These riots are going to keep happening and get worse and worse until something is done to lift these areas out of poverty, and given that we're looking like we're on the brink of a double-dip recession and have a party in power who wants to do nothing more than cut social services I can't imagine this is going to go away.

Good job on being a huge racist.

Unlike the US where helicopters and rubber bullets would be used. I hate this island and it's double standards regarding how much violent force police can use.

But really, this wouldn't have escalated to the point it has if the riot squads weren't just standing around trying to look intimidating, apprehending one or two stragglers.

Still doesn't change the fact it was a black riot.

Plenty of white people involved. It was an excuse for thugs and hooligans to burn and loot property, irrespective of the colour of their skin.

Why is the distinction even necessary? What exactly are you tying to say when you call it a "black riot"? How is it different from a regular riot?

Well, when we riot, we notify the town at least a month in advance to make sure there isn't any conflicting events. Oh, and we also make sure we document the prices of the stolen items so we can be properly taxed on the profit made selling PS3s to my G's, yo.

Wow, that does look quite pathetic.

They should hire some of our retired riot control force from the socialist era to teach them a thing or two.

Coincidentally, our own police force started having trouble with football riots a couple of years ago, around the time when the older generation that experienced the 80s left. Every time something major goes down the lack of decisive action is so obvious you can tell there's noone left who'd have the balls to call the shots and take the heat afterwards.

young men react more violently when subjected to pressure which is triggered by such as poverty, unemployment, crime and society's high demanding on the individual.
These riots are of course not justified but I can understand these people, it is young people with no faith in the future they have nothing and lose nothing of this.

Nottingham and Bristol too now. Also hearing unconfirmed reports of disturbances around Chatham and Cardiff. It's spreading to more completely unrelated areas of the country.

Prime Minister David Cameron has cut his holiday short to come back to the UK. We're saved! </blatantsarcasm>

Yeah, as if his presence is going to scare hundreds (thousands) of violent enraged people back into the holes that the crawled out of or something.

Last night the fun spread to where I live. Having seen the videos and heard the reports, about 80% of the people out there are just rubbernecking, waiting for oppurtunities and the 20% or so actually breaking into stuff or starting fires are just doing it because its happened elsewhere and they've realised they can get away with it. There's no political motivation or anything, they're just being arseholes and stealing shit because they can.

I should imagine this will at least make the peope in charge re-think the current methods of handling "riots". A good old fashioned bit of police brutality would work wonders for getting the chavvy little cunts to stop organising big break-ins and setting fires.

Now taking bets on whether or not new draconian security laws will be brought in

That was my first thought on hearing about these riots. I reckon that the "government" will see this as an opportunity to dust off the criminal justice act and extend it again. :/

However, these riots are just completely dickish; a bunch of twats carrying out copycat violence for the hell of it. There isn't even a "cause" or anything; just a bunch of bell-ends breaking stuff, stealing stuff and setting stuff on fire. Haven't these people got football matches to go to?

Parliament reconvenes on Thursday to discuss further action. Good that there's some decisive and effective action being taken. </moresarcasm>

Not anymore, they've all been cancelled due to the riots, heh.

I think the majority of matches in London were cancelled.
EDIT: DooMAD beat me to it! :)

Apparently, thanks to the massive though somewhat inevitable cutbacks on the number of police patrolling the streets of the UK, the force had to call upon a vast number of trainees who had yet to have any experience in the field. Of course, the mere sight of a uniform counts for a lot, so I it's probably the right decision.

I have family in Twickenham, which is near to one of the major riot sites. Thankfully the "Cheltenham average" have no interest in vandalising residential areas, though there are a lot of high end shops to be looted.

Maybe they'll stop buying useless cameras and start hiring back people? Though on the other hand, it'd mean reducing unemployment figures, which is wrong and evil.

If only the Americans would help by bombing government installations and resources to ensure that the government cannot quash these riots we could have a revolution on our hands.

Isn't that the way it's meant to work? ;)

@hervoheebo- Why contain it? Let it spill over the schools and churches, let the loot pile up in the streets. In the end they'll beg us to take it.
