nVidia jams another one up my ass

Recommended Posts

Damn you nVidia. Damn you to the deepest, darkest pits of the nastiest hell in existence. Or, if that can't be found, downtown Mobile.

Has anyone else had trouble with the latest (28.32) Detonator drivers? The 21 and 22 series worked wonderfully for me, so I blindly went along, assuming that nVidia could do no wrong to my card.

I think we've already established that they've fucked that up.

After a repair installation and two different versions of the driver, I've given up.

In other words STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THESE DRIVERS. I'm in Safe Mode writing this, for crying out loud. This is like the second time I've ever used Safe Mode in XP. I wasn't even sure they had one until my little hard drive incident.

Why isn't there a place where a man can go for some consistently reliable drivers?

nVidia couldn't write a driver to save their lives.

Nvidia drivers are perfect. Yes I mean it. When you're coding they're extremely functional, unlike any other company out there.

The problem is, each Detonator has an assload of problems with X or Y systems. You just gotta find the one that suits you. 27.70 does miracles for me. 27.20 gives me BSODs.

Well, fod, if not nVidia, then who? ATI? Ha! Their drivers are even worse.

ATI or Nvida, eh? Damn, I wish some new 3d graphics card company that actually cared about it's customers rather than its profit margin would come along. I know, what about Creative?

Wait, come back, what did I say?...

Choosing a video card is like choosing a web browser.

THEY ALL SUCK INCREDULOUS AMOUNTS OF PUPPYCOCK.

You simply have to find the one that's the least shitty for your tastes.

Who really gives a fuck if you can run a shitty game at 1600x1200 in 32 bit color at 9000 frames a second, huh? I'd much sooner play Wolf3D at 320x200 on a 12" LCD monitor then Q3A at 4096x2048 on a 60" plasma widescreen. Why can't video card companies STOP DOING these FUCKING RETARDED custom extensions, get behind OpenGL 2.0, quit trying to destroy each other and actually focus on THEIR OWN SHITTY PRODUCTS?

Oh yeah, they're too busy trying to kick each other in the balls to actually run any further in the race. Fucking stupid. The top 30 executives at nVidia should just be dragged out into the street and fucking executed. Anyone who has ever used more than one nVidia driver will agree.

There are very few hardware companies that are seen as being "nice" in the public eye. AMD are probably one, as are Matrox, but that's about it (although IBM is not seen as being particularly nasty, just retarded).

That's funny I've owned 3 NVIDIA cards and none of them have had major problems with any of the drivers. NVIDIA has some of the best drivers of any video card I've used.

The problems with stability/crashing/graphical glitches have come down to one of these things:

1. Corrupted Windows Install
2. Stupid ass VIA drivers that fuck things up
3. Doing something stupid like deleting one of the driver DLLs (my little brother of course) and expecting the drivers to work.

99% of the time the problem is the user behind the keyboard who doesn't know enough about what he or she is trying to fuck with. Shit I had a bunch of problems before I knew how the fuck to tweak video card drivers and actually manage a fucking OS.

But remember: NVIDIA puts NO GUARANTEES, NO WARRANTIES, and NO OBLIGATIONS (expressed or implied) on their drivers. they are NOT legally obligated to release updated drivers AT ALL. And nobody forces you to upgrade your drivers.

I'd recommend doing a low level format, doing a clean install of windows, reinstalling all ur games, properly setting up all the OS, BIOS, GAME and DRIVEr options, and then if it still doesn't work then you can say the drivers suck.

You could go with ATI but their drivers are a joke.

Re 28.32 DRIVERS:

They have given me the highest 3DMark2001 score to date, the absolute best OpenGL performance, the best 2D image quality, all with added stability and bug fixes.

I haven't had a single crash using them.

I can't see how they can suck on ur system so much, unless your system is the problem!

If you ask me, all hardware that has come out in the last 2 years is crap. All that you can do is pick the hardware that sucks the least.

ALL hardware over the last two years ? Nonsense.

Processors - faster and smaller than they were two years ago, although the top of the range processor now is more expensive than the top of the range processor then.

Motherboards - besides being more technogically advanced (i.e. the circuitry is on a smaller scale) now, they haven't changed too much, but I wouldn't consider them to be bad.

Memory - somewhat faster and MUCH cheaper than it was two years ago

Soundcards - okay, so soundcards haven't really changed very much, but then there isn't really much you can do to improve them. The Audigy improves on the Live as much as it possibly can, especially in the EAX department.

Hard-drives - bigger, faster, quieter and cheaper than they were two years ago. I'm certainly not complaining.

CD/DVD drives - faster and cheaper than they were two years ago. Unfortunately, in some cases they're also louder.

Monitors - haven't really changed very much (unless you count flatscreen technology), but they're considerably cheaper nowadays.

Mice, keyboards, joysticks - lots of minor but cool things have been done to new controllers over the past couple of years (such as the increasing usage of wireless devices). You can't tell me that MS' wireless optical mouse isn't cool.

In the aftermath of the collapse of Enron and accounting scandals that have since come to light, BusinessWeek decided it "couldn't take at face value some reported numbers" and chose not to rank Nvidia Corp (NVDA).,

damn you only need to keep an eye on how your stock is doing

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002-- Kaplan Fox Seeks to Recover Losses For Investors Who Purchased NVIDIA Corp. Common Stock

Kaplan Fox (kaplanfox.com) has filed a class action against NVIDIA Corporation ("NVIDIA") NVDA and certain of the Company's officers and directors in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

The suit is brought on behalf of all persons or entities who purchased or otherwise acquired the common stock of NVIDIA between February 15, 2000 and February 14, 2002, inclusive (the "Class Period").

Law Firm Kaplan Fox Announces Class Action Lawsuit Against NVIDIA Corporation
March 18, 2002 7:46:00 PM ET

The complaint charges NVIDIA and certain of its officers and directors with violations of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The complaint alleges, among other things, that during the Class Period defendants issued a series of false and misleading statements concerning NVIDIA's financial condition. In order to overstate revenues in its financial statements, NVIDIA violated Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and SEC rules by engaging in an improper scheme. As a result of defendants' misleading statements and accounting improprieties during the Class Period, the price of NVIDIA common stock traded at artificially inflated prices.

1. I don't own any NVIDIA stock

2. A few rotten employees do not make the company bad. It's not like Enron where the leadership lied to the underlings and caused the collapse. It was some of the underlings that did some bad stuff, and the SEC is going after the underlings, not the corporate leadership.

3. SEC is going after individuals, not hte company. And the class action lawsuit, while it may be costly, will not bankrupt NVIDIA.

Cool, that goes right up there with the mental giants that thought up the salem witch trials and the whole "teacher insults my kid, so I I guess I should also sue the school board which hired the teacher, and then move on to the school system which controls the school bord, and then litigate state of XXXXX because the school system works for them, and I might as well go after the federal government because it controls all of that shit in one form or another."

As I said I don't own any NVIDIA stock, hell I dont even like the company.

I'm just arguing against you saying that it's going belly up, which I think will not happen.

But oh well, we'll just be paying $600 for the next ATI card (and along with it the world's shittiest drivers) instead of $600 for the next NVIDIA card which will actually have all its features functioning when you take it out of the box, and not 6 months later =)

CARMACK'S MIGHTY WORD :

February 11, 2002
-----------------

Last month I wrote the Radeon 8500 support for Doom. The bottom line is that it will be a fine card for the game, but the details are sort of interesting.

I had a pre-production board before Siggraph last year, and we were discussing the possibility of letting ATI show a Doom demo behind closed doors on it. We were all very busy at the time, but I took a shot at bringing up support over a weekend. I hadn't coded any of the support for the custom ATI extensions yet, but I ran the game using only standard OpenGL calls (this is not a supported path, because without bump mapping everything looks horrible) to see
how it would do. It didn't even draw the console correctly, because they had driver bugs with texGen. I thought the odds were very long against having all the new, untested extensions working properly, so I pushed off working on it until they had revved the drivers a few more times.

My judgment was colored by the experience of bringing up Doom on the original Radeon card a year earlier, which involved chasing a lot of driver bugs. Note that ATI was very responsive, working closely with me on it, and we were able to get everything resolved, but I still had no expectation that things would work correctly the first time.

Nvidia's OpenGL drivers are my "gold standard", and it has been quite a while since I have had to report a problem to them, and even their brand new extensions work as documented the first time I try them. When I have a problem on an Nvidia, I assume that it is my fault. With anyone else's drivers, I assume it is their fault. This has turned out correct almost all the time. I have heard more anecdotal reports of instability on some systems with Nivida drivers recently, but I track stability separately from correctness, because it can be influenced by so many outside factors.

ATI had been patiently pestering me about support for a few months, so last month I finally took another stab at it. The standard OpenGL path worked flawlessly, so I set about taking advantage of all the 8500 specific features. As expected, I did run into more driver bugs, but ATI got me fixes rapidly, and we soon had everything working properly. It is interesting to contrast
the Nvidia and ATI functionality:

And so we learn a mighty lesson.....
Unless a game requires it and its a "golden standard" Don't bother upgrading. I've had terrible expierences with sopposed new updates that where sopposed to make my system better, but made it worse instead. A golden rule for most software is you can't fix bugs without creating new ones. I'm yet to find a perfectly functing piece of software.
