Musicians Thread

Recommended Posts

We need a thread for musicians. And by musician thread, this most certainly does not mean begging for someone to write music for your wad. This is a musician thread for all musicians regardless of whether they give birth to their sound on a computer or otherwise. So even if all you have to show is MIDI music that you've written for a Doom project, that's fine. BUT NO BEGGING.

I started playing cello when I was 8, but it was entirely due to pressure from my parents. I played until I was 15 and was in the Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra for a while, but I hated nearly every minute of it, and was eventual able to persuade my parents to let me quit. Today I think it is a pity though because the cello is a really a beautiful instrument and I only recently discovered it.

I've played a bit of bass and guitar since I quit playing the cello at 15. I never really got into it too much and only recorded short little songs if I could be bothered.

Here's something I found from 2008, a melodic bass dirge that I recorded: http://www.braindamage.vg/doom/sigvatr_bass.mp3

These days though, I'm mostly interested in digital music, especially noise and deep, haunting synths. Most of my experiments so far have turned out sounding extremely... experimental, to say the least.

Here's something I consider to sound quite haunting. It starts off in silence and gradually increases in intensity over 8 minutes until it hits a peak. My inspiration was, simply put, hell. My wife refuses to let me play it in the house.

I really recommend that you let it play from start to finish. It is very ambient in nature, so I don't recommend you listen to it if you don't have a lot of patience.

I'm keen to see what other people have recorded or written!

I've got a few here. I have others in progress and a few older songs that, while pretty well written, need an overhaul in the mixing department. I'm not entirely satisfied with the songs I've linked to, either. It varies from song to song, but in one way or another, I feel that they're not quite "there".

Honestly, I've been slacking pretty hard on the creative front lately.

Can't say I blame her. That's eerie.

Sigvatr - I wouldn't let my husband play that either :D It was cool though

Megalyth - I like your stuff, although the first track didn't really catch my fancy

eternal slumber - Are you playing all the instruments here? That's some wonderful drum chops you have if so. These songs kinda feel like an easy listening version of Hella :P

I play guitar/bass/drums, sing, and mess around in fruity loops (a wicked old version, studio 5) for fun. Never been in a band though I would like to at some point. I never took lessons, so since I've been playing for many years I'm not amazing. My best quality is probably improvisation, I mostly learned how to play by writing silly MIDI beats and jamming along with them.

I looked at soundcloud a while ago and meant to get an account, and since Megalyth reminded me of it I just now decided to get one. I put two of my most recent electronic tracks up:

Not sure what genre to call my music, I take inspiration from techno, trance, trip hop, dnb, and all sorts of stuff.

Also, almost all of the sounds in Grass Crust were made using this fun little program called SFXR. It's meant for creating simple game sound effects quickly, but I find it fun to use for music as well...I like the oldschool vibe I can get with such a bare-bones synth

I've been writing music for something like 12 years now. I've posted a few times about my current project, Partition 36. Usually I'd describe my music as some sort of synthpop with occasional influences from IDM, industrial, and trance. Right now I'm working on a new album.

I also have a YouTube channel here. Here's a recent sample:

Aside from that, I've also got a collaboration project going on with a friend called treeFungus. His idea behind it is to do weird experimental music.

Your music sounds like modern day 16-bit shooter music, which makes it awesome ^_^

I mostly make 2 types of music, here's 2 examples:

weird complex beats:

gay melodies:
http://www.speedyshare.com/files/30261690/blubMels.mp3

I've made tons of songs for both types.

edit:

this is a zip of the same 2 mp3s linked above:

this is a zip of 2 more mp3s not linked above yet:

Maybe this should be called a composer's thread? Hahah. Played the alto sax from middle school to 2 yrs of college, could still play if interested/forced (damn my sister going into marching band) but I don't compose or anything.

ggg - yo, could you put all your tunes in a zip file plz?

You mean ALL of them, or just those same ones zipped to decrease file size? I edited above post to zip them (hardly lowered file size though), and added 2 more in a separate zip. I have to do lots of organizing of files from previous computers and stuff to even find lots of other ones. snorfExper (in last link) is pretty awesome and disturbing imo, but the global volume is kinda low so you'd have to turn the volume up. I forget how I made it exactly but know I used melodyne.

Ahh, musicianship... the one thing I'd love to be able to do but almost definitely can not. I could probably handle using pre-recorded samples and the like to construct a simple tune, but I've yet to show any aptitude on a real instrument of any kind.

On the subject of playing actual instruments, I can play like a dozen instruments, but I've never recorded anything. I've played guitar and bass in a few bands in the past.

This thread got me a bit more motivated to work on my electronic music. I don't have anything else to show yet, but I opened my DAW for the first time in like 2 months and got some work done.

@magicsofa - Grass Crust is goddamned brilliant, I love that style. It just about melted my brain and left me with a stupid grin on my face. :D

@yukib1t - I already mentioned it in blogs, but I think your music is bad-ass.

I've write music every now and again, but I haven't released a lot of my stuff except for random bits and pieces over the years. If I ever get better midi software, I'll try my hand and releasing some stuff.

Used to write quite a bit of metal stuff with modplug tracker. I've uploaded a few recorded versions of some of the more recent songs at soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/sirjuddington (the guitars are all played/recorded by me, everything else is taken straight from the tracked mod versions).

I haven't written quite as much lately, but still like to every now and again. There are a few more recent songs than those I linked above, but I haven't gotten around to recording the guitars for them yet.

For whoever is interested, I still have all the mod versions of all my old stuff up at my website:
http://slayer.mancubus.net/index.php?page=bastardhead (heh @ the descriptions, was written quite a while ago now)

Also some old midi/mods I've written for doom projects:

Keep that one close. It's one of four in existence that has my (old) name on it!

mork - yeah I meant ALL the files. If you do some organizing some time, you should post them! Also, if you do some organizing, you could gather up all of your maps/demos into a nice collection.

I've played with Anvil Studio a bit in the past, but I usually need some sort of inspiration to produce anything worth listening to. Here's all my junk. Some are quite mediocre (imo), while some tracks (like Hope Sustained) I think are quite good.

As for playing any real instruments: lol.

I have a pair of crappy headphones that cuts out everything but the lows, and a crappy laptop speakers that cut out everything but the highs. Excuse the bad mixing job.
