what would you not want to see in DOOM4?

Recommended Posts

We have a doom 4 wish list thread, so why not have a doom4 thread with stuff you would absolutely hate to see in it? Just for fun, mind you, not like we have much say in how the actual game would turn out.

I'll start off with:

Sniper rifles of any kind. It wouldn't fit the expected gameplay, and would slow down the pace of the game.
Iron sites: would just feel unnatural and untrue to the doom series.
An online multiplayer that does not remain classic to how older FPS's were IE just simple death match or team deathmatch, along the lines of quake or unreal styled gameplay. No ranks, perks, etc.

-A soundtrack largely consisting of heavy metal music.

-CoD-isms (regen health, limited sprint that only works when moving forward, limited amount of weapons you can carry).

-Duct tape jokes. (Please, Id, don't sink down to the Internet's level.)

-Extensive DLC. (I'd buy something akin to an expansion pack, but please don't make me buy new guns or stupid stuff like that.)

-The character you play as being able to speak. (Silent protagonists ONLY.)

-Really long dialogue sequences. (If I'm standing around longer than a minute, waiting for somebody to shut up, I'm gonna be upset.)

-A single-barreled shotgun with extremely loose spread. (Let's not do that again, huh?)

That's all I can think of for now.

To the first: Hahahahahaha good fucking luck.

To the second - Also, good luck. I'm 99% sure they'll go with Steamworks again, since Rage is shipping as such.

- Stupid gimmicks that ruin the flow of the gameplay.
- A bad balance between realism and oldschoolness. There shouldn't be too much of either.
- Bland, Hans Zimmer-esque music.
- Unnecessary amounts of references to the previous Doom titles.
- Deathmatch modes just for the sake of it.
- Visual mistakes that are common in shooters these days(lighting that makes everthyng look like it's made out of plastic, gray-ish colors everywhere, characters that always have the same look on their faces that is supposed to be threatening and angry only ending up looking completely goofy).
- System requirements so high that I won't be able to play it.

Thanks for mentioning this, I had forgotten it. IMO the shotgun should do much less damage per pellet, but the spread cone should be much smaller.

There should really be none of this "I FIRED A SHOTGUN IN YOUR FACE AT POINT BLANK SO I DO 20000% DAMAGES!!1!"

That reminds me--add driving sequences, forced stealth sequences, and escort missions to my list of things I don't want.

Here's what Goaty doesn't want:

- Lengthy, unskippable cut scenes. I liked that in Doom 3 the cut scenes were short and the press of a button instantly put you back in the game.
- Lots of forced interaction like talking to people, retrieving information, and as mentioned previously, escort mentions, stealth sequences and vehicular segments. I'm not entirely opposed to those things being in the game, but if they are, they should be minimal.
- Weak, unimpressive weapons. Given how incredibly satisfying it is to say, berserk someone to gibs, double barrel shotty someone in the gut, or mow them down with the Doom 64 chaingun, there's no excuse for pea shooters like the ones in Doom 3.
- Enemies and props that look more alien that demonic. Give us back our horns, goat legs and generally Satanic looking imagery. And don't skimp on the burning inverted crosses ala E2M1.
- A primarily metal soundtrack, as previously stated. Some really sinister, otherworldly sounding riffs here and there would actually kick a lot of ass (think AngelCorpse, Portal, Sunn 0))), Morbid Angel, etc.), but there's no need for all metal all the time, and there's certainly no need for the trendy sounding "metal" that finds its way into some games today.
- A bunch of unnecessary features that prevent me from just jumping into the game. I like how you can fire up Doom and just instantly start running and gunning. I don't want to play Doom 4 for the first time and constantly have to reference the manual because I don't understand some gimmick that's supposed to enhance the gameplay.
- Last but certainly not least, cheap looking gore. We all hate the gore in Doom 3 and even most modern games still insist on portraying gore as a spray of instantly disappearing goo. If you're anything like me, you want to be able to cut down an imp or demon or whatever in any numbers of ways and see its body rupture and collapse. Now that's gore.

-A Doom 2 clone
-The game to be too simple- we already have CoD-likes for that
-Another doomworld thread bitching about things games have done different in the past 15 years. (Seriously, wasn't there already a "what do we not want in Doom 4" thread?)

I know. Repetitive topics are repetitive. I guess there's just not that much to say about Doom 4 until we finally see some proper media.

I think that straight crosses in an evil background are much more effective than overused allegedly satanic St Peter crosses. It's like "God is here but won't help you and wants to see if you're worth living" or "everything satan does is permitted by God" (true story). Also, why not milk the "defy the Church" cashcow? It does work with bestsellers...

printz, I like what you said about the crosses. It is indeed true; St. Peter was crucified upside down because he did not feel he deserved to be crucified in the same manner as Jesus. I guess it depends on what the general perception of evil-looking crosses is. Most people (Christians included) seem to be unaware of St. Peter's original use of the inverted cross. These days it's typically interpreted as defying the Church, or a sign of a Satanic presence. I agree with you, however, that seeing a right-side-up cross in a blasphemous situation is interesting, too.

Getting back to the topic, I don't want cheap scares. I want to be legitimately disturbed, not sligtly miffed because they throw flashing colors and random gore at you.

On that note of being legitimately disturbed, I really don't want to see anymore unexplained flesh growths intertwined with wires and computers. That seemed to be the key horror element in wads like KDiZD and apparently TSoZD too. (weird snake-textured structures and skin behind computer panels) I'm sure seeing something like that would probably be kinda horrifying in real life but seeing a CGI red gelatinous blob pulsating but also being completely unthreatening and unexplained is extremely lame and unimaginative. I was extremely disappointed to see those things make an appearance in a video I watched of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I'd much rather see corpses pinned against walls, bulletholes, bloodstains, limbs hanging from the ceiling, torches, impaled scientists or warped marble castles establishing themselves within the UAC bases like the original dooms did.

In my experience most "Christians" don't know shit about their religion. They pick and choose which parts they want to follow or believe, pretty much whatever makes their lives easier. Just another reason I hate religious nuts.

Linearity.
A voice actor for Doomguy.
A lack of variation in environments.
Doom 3 with updated graphics.
Rooms that all look the same.
And I hope the soundtrack doesn't have anything to do with the guy from NiN. I'm with Goaty on the metal soundtrack thing, if there was metal in it it'd probably end up being shallow trendy ansgty teen garbage so I'd rather it didn't feature metal at all then.

And also I hope it doesn't fall into the trap that most of these shitty modern Hollywood inspired horror games do (including it's predecessor) where the focus is on cramped dark gameplay that relies mostly on the fact that you can't see shit, as well an over reliance on shock value for the sake of shock value.. A game really needs more depth to it's gameplay than a string of cheap scares to be a good game.

And in turn, I see a lot of Atheists who don't know why they're atheists besides the fact some celebrity says you should be (CM Punk, anyone?) or it being the 'cool' and 'trendy' thing to do these days.

People just really need to get better info on their own beliefs...it's sad really.

Yeah, plus the fact that because Atheism is kind of hot right now, we've turned the tables and relentlessly make fun of Christianity in the media, as if that's somehow more acceptable than making fun of Atheists.

Getting back to the topic, I would like as little swimming as possible in Doom 4. I can't think of any shooters with ENJOYABLE swimming segments.

If I may inquire, how exactly is a random unexplained marble room any more or less "imaginative" than similarly unexplained organic growth?

Plus, weren't you just recently complaining about game worlds that too literal to let you be imaginative yourself when you're playing them? It sounds more like you'd rather just see something matching your own idea of how things should be laid out for you so you don't have to imagine anything at all.

I hope there won't be any bugs and technical problems like Rage is having. Anyway, when Doom 4 will come out, I'll buy it even if there's things that I don't like. I won't be able to resist.

You don't need a reason to be an atheist. A lack of belief is a natural state. You need a reason only if you believe something.

1# The Soul Cube - it sucked, an ruined the game play.

2# Cut-Scenes and Cinema Sequences - this doesn’t work for first person shooters.

3# Slow Paced game play / make Doom 4 have faster game play than Doom 3 had

4# Low monster population / Doom 4 should have way more monsters than Doom 3 had in each level.

5# The Doom 3 Shotgun - it’s shot spread was a joke.

6# All the Doom 3 weapon and monster designs - scrap them and revert back to classic Doom

7# Vehicle driving sequences - like what Quake 4 had. Please… no vehicles for Doom. Keep Doom 4 100% first person.

8# The Doom 3 storyline - scrap it and use the story of Classic Doom. without the Half-life type arrival and with Heaven and the Soul Cube. Give us the twisted ending that Doom 1 had.

9# A sequel to Doom 3 - Just do a remake of Doom 1 and Doom 2: Hell on earth.

10# (punching) - please do not have the Marine punch demons - it is incredibly idiotic and the marine would obviously get his ass kicked. Just scrap the pistol and do what was to be done with [Alpha Doom] where the marine starts out with a semi auto rifle, that also has a bayonet for melee attacks.
