Protect IP Act- aka More Government Meddling.

Recommended Posts

Oh shit, I didn't think it was gonna get THIS bad. Then again, what should I expect?

At this point, I bet the bill will probably pass. And then, there will be massive protest, maybe even riot if the government is stubborn enough. Then police brutality will be used to stomp out all protest and the potential riot.

Then the bill will be used for political censorship as well, it WILL happen if this thing passes.

This is it, folks, the US is now an oppressive police state.

EDIT: In retrospective, this sounds pretty stupid. I was just extremely angry to hear that they won't even allow opponents of the bill to testify.

Didn't Obama say that he would veto any bill that threatened net neutrality?

Even if he does veto it, remember the line-up of yokel puppets you have to choose from next year. I'm beginning to think this is inevitable.

True, True. If it does go through Anonymous and other hacker groups are going to have a field day. I wonder of the idiots in Washington know what they will be getting them self's into if this law does go through.

This bill is economically harmful and politically suicidal. If this gets through, congress will have a very hard time getting the American people to trust them again for a long time.

I know that the public still usually trusts the government no matter what they do, but I think this is big enough that it will make a pretty huge impact. Especially when they try to go on the internet and see it butchered to hell.

A majority of the public doesn't even understand what this bill will do. People who use the internet as a sort of culture will be hit, but the population will still go on Facebook and watch whatever hasn't been deleted from Youtube and be happy.

Saw someone on Youtube the other day who thinks that Internet Censorship is about child porn. Told me to look it up on Wikipedia when I (admittedly rather rudely, being pissed by the bill) called him out on it.

Will anything even be left? Who's to say that YouTube won't be shut down, even if just temporarily to remove all violating videos?

I don't think even the average American will be very pleased when they go to YouTube and see this:

"Sorry, the site is unavailable for viewing, as we are down for maintenance to remove a large amount of copyright infringing videos", and then days later it's back up, only to find that 85% of the entire site's videos are gone for good, many accounts outright suspended, and maybe even legal action being taken on a good number of users? They're not going to be happy when their favorite subscriptions are gone for good, and that all of their favorite content has been taken down, and the government's to blame, most of all for a flaky cover reason.

No, Youtube will still host vlogs and discussions, it's just you can no longer use clips. Also, big business like Hulu, Vevo and the likes all have their official pages to show music and videos officially. Sadly it's really going to hit bedroom musicians wanting to do covers, or maybe even people who are making an income giving guitar lessons on Youtube, too. We'll see.

Youtube is now streaming concerts and shit, you can really see how it's been corporatized, so to speak. I guess it's natural. A lot of obscure/rare music video/performances/films will be lost too. I think that'll be the biggest bummer.

Comcast, Charter, Verizon DSL and Optimum Online are blocking this site, is any of yours if you are not one of these services? If you are, which one?

Do you feel this is right of them to do this or no?

Add CenturyLink to that list, returns 404 down here at my parents house, but it doesn't appear to be down.

Despicable. With all the police brutality against the Occupy protests, censorship bills, and now major ISPs blocking protest sites, this is indeed becoming a police-state nation. I want to move to Canada, but I hear the net sucks even worse than it does in the U.S.

I did some research on this, and the claim that ISPs are blocking the site does not appear to be true. (link) It seems that Afilias, who runs the .org TLD, have deleted the "glue" for the domain from their DNS. Why they have done this, I am not sure.

The reason why some ISPs still work is that the DNS entries for the site are still cached on their DNS servers. (link)

Querying Dreamhost's DNS servers directly gives you three IP addresses for the site (75.101.145.87, 174.129.212.2, 75.101.163.44), any of which you add to your HOSTS file should make the site work for now.

None of the IPs worked for me (hello world, no such app, account expired).

Edit: Didn't work for the person in the first thread you've linked either.

I wouldn't be so sure at the moment. I went to all three of those, the first one just had an empty page with "Hello World" as the only content, the second has a page that says "Heroku, no such app | The owner may have removed or renamed this app", and finally the third being "This account has expired | The owner of this gallery should subscribe or renew PicsEngine to enable this gallery back."

EDIT: It appears that the site is back up now. Perhaps it was a server move or a publicity stunt?

The site is on shared servers, so getting there via the IP address would be a longshot.

Voters have notoriously short attention spans, after a few more knee-jerk inducing issues and a terrorist alert the bill will be all but forgotten.

Doomworld should add the code to their website, as I have done on my homepage to show support for the americancensorship.org movement. This bill is not going to stop piracy, it will only stop free speech.

This was going to happen in Australia as well with the Internet Filter from Steven Conroy.

So what's going on, did the bill pass? There was suppose to be something going on the 16th of this month but I haven't been paying attention. If it does/did pass, then I don't think sites like YouTube and Google would just take it lying down. Unless there's a massive bribe involved.

It hasn't been passed yet, but I'm beginning to feel like we're pretty royally fucked.

Welp, I suppose the Internet had a pretty good run. Gonna miss it.

As I said, you had to put them in your HOSTS file, not visit the IPs in your browser. But that is irrelevant now. (see: Virtual hosting)

Next step is to setup a parallel network that's not under government control - Outernet(*) anyone?

(*) Not necessarily based on the Polish model

I'myourtarget's thread title is:
Protect IP Act- aka More Government Meddling

Government meddling is not necessarily a bad thing, as a government, the key entity in charge of public matters, is there for the very purpose of meddling with society. The problem is that it is being used to benefit powerful interest groups that will mainly run over the rights of poorer people, and make them even more dependent on them and subservient.

So more than "more government meddling" it's "more government whoring to property and ownership elites", or a lack or proper meddling in terms of social justice.

With any luck, if this bill passes at all it'll get shot down by the courts instantaneously. Just like the "Decency in Communications" act(or whatever it was called), it's legislating an impossibility.
