You sure you're supposed to freely distribute these?

Well, I found them freely available, and it seems Softdisk no longer exists. I googled to see if Carmack had a site - my first idea was to email him, to see if he was interested in obtaining them, for nostalgia/if he no longer had copies.

"Freely available" and "Legally free to download" aren't synonymous.

According to Wikipedia, Softdisk switched to being an ISP in '95, abandoning the software part of their business. They ran downloadstore.com which is now owned and run by Flat Rock Software, that used to resell only Softdisk's Screen Saver Studio. (I checked. The site is now full of broken links, and the search function doesn't work.)

Bayou Internet took over their ISP operations in '06.

So who's to say who owns the copyright? I doubt Bayou Internet, if they have the rights, would care much.

Softdisk still exists, though not as Softdisk anymore.

Their old Mac crap is apparently now sold by Syndicomm (legit) but I haven't found their old PC crap. There's this broken site, but that's all.

Well that was lame. What if I go and find out who owns the copyright and get authorisation?

Good luck in that endeavor! We'll want a proof, though.

I'll send a couple of emails to find out, simply because I think that ruling is dumb.

What part wasn't clear to you? No warez or "grey area" downloads here. It's a RULE, stick to it.
