The Green Herring's Personal Demo Thread

Recommended Posts

This is a thread where I will post demos of mine that were not recorded for the Compet-n thread, as part of my idgames/levels/doom/ campaign, or a megawad, though I will post links to demo posts that qualify for those as well.

The question that will be on most readers' minds when they read this is, "Why don't you post your demos in the misc. demos thread?" This is because my usual demo output essentially consists of one-man demo packs, often comprising a full Ultimate Doom episode's worth of UV max and UV speed demos, which frequently get separate threads on this forum. This idea was conceived back when the misc. demos thread was a single thread that was huge enough after almost eight years to be nearly impossible to navigate. In addition, within that same thread, demo posts were rarely followed up by discussion of those demos, if ever. This thread will allow me to post my demos without drowning out other people's demos, provide a meaningful index for those interested in my demo output, and provide a central zone of discussion for it like my campaign thread does.

What I'm going to open this thread with is no exception to the "one-man demo pack" descriptor. This is Part 1 of 4 of an in-progress Doom II demo collection that follows these strict rules:

  • One WAD for each letter of the English alphabet, as well as one that starts with a number;
  • at least one WAD for each year of Doom modding between 1994 and 2011, the year when I started this;
  • and all WADs compatible with and completable in doom2.exe v1.9 (PrBoom-plus -complevel 2).
Part 1 covers letters A through F and a number, and WADs made as early as 1994 and as late as 2010. Enjoy!

I have added to the rules list for my WIP demo collection above, to clarify that these are all to be vanilla-compatible WADs.

Anyway, I have the full schedule for this "alphabet collection" decided, but you have the chance to make suggestions! You may post WADs you would like for me to play for the other letters, and if I find them better, more interesting to speedrun, or more fun to play than the intended level for that letter, I will play that one, if doing so won't eliminate a year from the list. For reference, out of the remaining WADs to be played, I have just one WAD each for 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2011. Do be warned, though; each WAD must follow the specifications I outlined for the collection, and they must be single-level WADs. With that said, suggest away!

I guess I was expecting a little much when it came to discussion in this thread. Still, I've taken j4rio's suggestion into consideration, and as I have this week off from school, I should be able to make progress on the next part of my collection.

In the meantime, here's a special April Fools' Day demo on what is probably the "greatest" WAD ever. Enjoy! ;)

Alas, this is a Doom WAD; this demo collection is for Doom II WADs. It may, however, show up in my idgames/levels/doom/ campaign. The other suggestions on your list I will take into consideration.

Spoiler

Maybe even the porno one, but don't expect a YouTube video to go with it. :P

Meanwhile, there's something I'm wondering about regarding my YouTube upload schedule. Should I start uploading demo videos once the next part of the collection is done, or should I upload a video for each WAD I successfully record on? The latter would have an inconsistent delay between videos, but it would show I'm doing stuff instead of just sitting on everything till it's all done. What do you think?

Whoops, I totally forgot about that!

I'd prefer this. Watching demos one after another can be a little boring, and you get more... fuzzy impression (not sure how to explain) when you do this. So I'd like to see more updates / less demos per update.

And one more suggestion: triex

Well I'm hardly one to talk, seeing as it's about two months since I updated at Youtube, but I'd prefer to see demos go up as soon as they're recorded. Youtube feels more immediate, and less permanent to me.

Well, I've decided to upload a new video each time a WAD for the next part of the collection is done. Check out my YouTube channel for the newest video! As usual, the equivalent demo files will be posted here when that part's done.

Why not post the demos as they come as well? Otherwise, what Memfis noted would still be the case for those of us who prefer to skip the videos and just watch demos. After all, it's easier to comment after watching one demo which stays fresh in the mind rather than a string of runs.

It's a good point. One that I'm going to follow up on, by making the demo file available now. While my usual website URL is in the video description, I'm making it an attachment to this post, too, in order to see how that goes. It also comes with my original description, which I had to heavily truncate in order to fit it onto YouTube. Now, then, here's the source of the "newest video" in my previous post!

Post demos, as well as videos, as soon as is practicable. I'd rather watch them on YouTube cos it's quick and easy but if I really like a map then I'll save it and its demos.
