Maes Posted March 22, 2012 GreyGhost said:Yep - that's one advantage vacuum tube technology has over solid-state devices. Ironically, US atomic tests demonstrated that early solid-state mil-spec devices were more resilient to EMP than contemporary mil-spec vacuum-tube tech. But we're talking about analog stuff like combat radios based on discrete transistors, not ICs, and always of mil-spec grade (with metal casings and shielding heavier than 100 iPhones), so any direct comparison with modern hardware (and especially consumer-grade stuff) is moot. 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted March 23, 2012 If you're referring to the AN/PRC-77, I think you'll find there are other practical considerations in adopting an all solid-state design - such as being able to use a lighter battery pack and standing a better chance of functioning after a 2 metre drop onto a concrete floor. Discrete transistors (even military grade devices) are susceptible to p-n junction punchthrough at lower voltages than vacuum tubes can withstand, and metal casings provide no protection since the EMP (with a peak amplitude of 50kv per metre) propagates on the copper circuit-board traces and transistor leads. That radio most likely passed EMP testing by virtue of being fitted with superior transient surge protectors, which are probably field-serviceable components. 0 Share this post Link to post
MRB_Doom Posted March 24, 2012 Sweden warns against bids to "blow up" talks with Iran Carl Bildt compared Putin to Hitler during the Russia-Georgia war back in 2008. I believe he is still not welcome in Moscow because of those remarks. So if you watch the news some day and you see a devastated Sweden caused by nuclear missiles, it would probably happen because of that prick. 0 Share this post Link to post

Last time I messed around with one of those at a Nam reenactment, the only signal we could pick up was UHF television audio. CSI was on. 0 Share this post Link to post

DooMAD Posted March 26, 2012 Israel take their ball and go home yet again. Someone dared to question that some of their settlements might not be legal, so that's as good an excuse as any to cut all ties with the UN Human Rights Council and accuse them of being biased, apparently. Also, funnily enough, the United States was the only country to vote against launching a fact-finding mission into Israel's settlements. Wonder why that might be. 0 Share this post Link to post

Kira Posted March 26, 2012 History really is a redundant thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_Nations After a number of notable successes and some early failures in the 1920s, the League ultimately proved incapable of preventing aggression by the Axis powers in the 1930s. Germany withdrew from the League, as did Japan, Italy, Spain and others. The onset of the Second World War showed that the League had failed its primary purpose, which was to prevent any future world war. The United Nations (UN) replaced it after the end of the war and inherited a number of agencies and organizations founded by the League. 0 Share this post Link to post

GreyGhost Posted March 26, 2012 The UN's already failed - many times. It's like a Frankensteinian experiment gone wrong, if not for the occasional jolt of electricity causing it to twitch you'd think it was dead. 0 Share this post Link to post

Nightmare Doom Posted March 31, 2012 This entire thread is nonsense and all it does it rivals in fear mongering. Also abandoned the "World War #" term since the last century was basically just one ongoing war and it's a poor way to describe those conflicts and how they developed and continue to evolve. Also a history lesson, the 7 years war was also a world war... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9e/SevenYearsWar.png Blue = GB + others Green = France + others 0 Share this post Link to post
